“Whenever I break down a character, the first thing I do is I’ll pick out the moments that I relate to with the character,” reveals Tom Holland in our recent webchat. He adds, “I build on that. That’s how I make a character that is true to myself while representing different things. With ‘The Crowded Room,’ I couldn’t really find anything. It feels like the biggest departure from myself. I really don’t see myself in it at all. It’s liberating to watch, but it’s quite scary when you’re doing it. Danny felt like a real stranger. I felt like I didn’t know him at all. It felt quite unnerving.” Watch our exclusive video interview above.

Though Apple TV+’s “The Crowded Room” was referring to mostly a metaphorical room, the show did in fact spend a lot of its time in one physical room — or at least, Amanda Seyfried’s character did. But in reality, she loved that.
Seyfried played Raya, a psychologist enlisted to interrogate Danny Sullivan (Holland) after he found himself caught up in a shooting at Rockefeller Center. For the most part, those questioning sessions all took place in a single room at the prison Danny was being held in, meaning that for most of the series, Seyfried was simply acting opposite Holland while sitting across a table from him.
But, in a lot of ways, that allowed the actress to play in an area she loves to get into.
“I love sitting. And I love silence,” Seyfried told TheWrap.

[This story includes major spoilers from The Crowded Room finale, “Judgment.”]
Tom Holland began a story on The Crowded Room that came to a shocking — albeit, satisfying — conclusion with the AppleTV+ series’ finale.
When the 10-episode limited series first introduced audiences to Holland’s Danny Sullivan, some knew his story would be loosely based on the real-life experiences of Billy Milligan, the first person diagnosed with dissociative identity disorder and the first to be acquitted of a major crime due to his condition.
Those who didn’t know the basis for the long-gestating series (The Crowded Room, inspired by the 1981 nonfiction novel The Minds of Billy Milligan, has circled around Hollywood since the 1990s) were faced with major reveals in almost every episode of the second half of the season, starting with the fact that most of the people Danny had been interacting with throughout the show (Sasha Lane, Lior Raz, Sam Vartholomeos, Jason Isaacs and...

The whole truth of Danny Sullivan’s (Holland) life was officially revealed in Episode 7 of “The Crowded Room,” explaining exactly what Jack (Jason Isaacs) meant in Episode 6 when he mentioned “us.” It turns out, most of the characters we’d met up to that point were all Danny’s alters, each taking turns driving his life when they felt he needed them most.

Some people just need grace. Before arriving in a courtroom for a hearing, all defendants have been through stuff most people can never imagine. The purpose of a hearing is to determine whether a person is guilty of the crime they've been accused of by all fair means.
As Danny's trial ended on The Crowded Room Season 1 Episode 10, his defense team pulled something short of a miracle.
Stan and Rya had avoided putting Danny on the stand because it is usually the smart thing to do.
When a counselor puts their client on the stand, they expose them to the other side, and there are very many ways that it can go wrong. If the client is truly guilty, they can expose themselves, and if the prosecution is really crafty, they might trip the client into incriminating themselves.
There was an extra layer to the Danny Sullivan case because they...

Danny Sullivan has two mother figures in his life in Apple TV’s The Crowded Room, his own mother, Candy, and his counselor, Rya Goodwin, who’s brought in after Danny is arrested for shooting up the Rockefeller Center. However, the two women differ starkly in their attitudes, beliefs, and the way they treated Danny. That forms the central idea of this article, where we look at how Candy failed in the worst possible way as a mother. Meanwhile, a woman Danny didn’t know until he was arrested ended up being his guardian angel. Read on to explore the two contrasting female characters that Danny encountered in his troubled life.
A child’s mother is the closest person they’ve had for the earliest and most vulnerable years of their lives. A mother protects, cares for, and nourishes her child, at times going beyond her capacities to ensure that...

The final episode of Apple TV’s The Crowded Room shows a major tussle between Danny Sullivan (Tom Holland) and Jack (the immaculate Jason Isaacs), an entity that never existed beyond Danny’s mind. The Apple TV Miniseries, The Crowded Room released its final episode today, and these past couple of months have been an emotional ride, to say the least. We witnessed how a young man named Danny Sullivan explored so many unknown things about himself and then was made a spectacle before a court because of a crime he committed without his own knowledge. The miniseries throws light on the importance of looking after mental health, putting an end to child abuse, and healing from sexual trauma. Danny suffered from differential identity disorder, a concept virtually unknown before it was diagnosed, thanks to his illness in the series, and he used to survive with several personas in his mind. Thus, the name of the show comes from the crowd that inhabited the room, which was Danny’s mind. Today, we take a look at the personas that Danny’s mind created and...

[This interview was conducted prior to the SAG-AFTRA strike authorization.] [Warning: The below contains Major spoilers for The Crowded Room Season 1, Episode 9, “Family.”] The Crowded Room is nearing the end of its run at Apple TV+, and as fans await to see the fate of Danny Sullivan (Tom Holland), star Emmy Rossum is addressing his mom Candy’s decisions in the penultimate episode, “Family.” While Danny’s trial continued, Candy finally showed her face in court after being asked by his lawyer Stan (Christopher Abbott) and psychologist Rya (Amanda Seyfried). At first, she’s apprehensive about participating, afraid of the backlash she’ll face from her abusive husband Marlin (Will Chase) and the judgment she’d experience from onlookers, but little by little, she was seemingly swayed to take a definitive stand in support of her son. Danny Sullivan was the unluckiest child, young man, and person ever. But how unlucky can one person be?
The trial to determine Danny's innocence or guilt in the Rockefeller shooting began on The Crowded Room Season 1 Episode 9, progressing to witness and professional statements, leaving the ruling for another time.
I'm always fascinated by trials, so I have watched numerous legal dramas and enjoyed every second of courtroom theater.
I never thought a day would come when I failed to enjoy a TV episode set almost exclusively inside a courtroom, but that day arrived with this trial.
The episode opened with Danny preparing for trial, and it just reinforced everything about him that makes one's heart bleed for him.
Tying a tie is a skill any young man his age should have mastered. They could learn from a dad, brother, peer, or friend. Yet Danny Sullivan never had any of those,...

At a certain point in our lives, we must confront different parts of our being. However, we have the luxury of private parts, which everyone rarely sees.
We also have the luck of knowing them, controlling them, and finding lasting solutions if we're lucky enough.
Danny Sullivan struggled to come to terms with different parts of his existence on The Crowded Room Season 1 Episode 8. These parts had been operating in the world without his knowledge, leaving him to suffer the consequences.
Accepting these parts was not his biggest problem. He had legal troubles shadowing him everywhere, and every turn worsened his position.

The eighth episode of Apple TV’s The Crowded Room was released today, and it shows just how lost and alone Danny Sullivan has been his entire life. In the previous episode, the personalities inside Danny’s mind sat in a round-table discussion to decide whether they should vacate Danny’s mind, and then Jack ultimately decided that it was best if they stayed. But Danny finally came to terms with the chaos inside his mind and begged Rya to help him, so this episode deals mostly with Rya helping Danny as he struggles to piece his shattered psyche together. It also shows how low creatures like Marlin can sink when it comes to saving themselves.

Back in May, Tom Holland opened up about his sobriety and mental health. In an interview with Entertainment Weekly about his new Apple TV+ series "The Crowded Room," the Marvel star revealed that he decided to focus on his mental wellness because of his work on the series and that he was one year and four months sober at the time.
But in a more recent turn of events, the star has stated that it wasn't his work on the show which caused him to ditch booze, as he was forced to address rumors that he stopped drinking after having a "meltdown" behind-the-scenes of his latest series. "The wildest rumour I've ever heard about myself is that I decided to become sober after having a meltdown on set, which is wildly untrue," he told BuzzFeed in June. "I decided to give up drinking long before I stepped on set on 'The Crowded Room.

Every show has a turning point, and The Crowded Room Season 1 Episode 7 was it for The Crowded Room.
By the first half of The Crowded Room Season 1, there was a rough idea about what about Danny's story was not real.
It was clear some characters in Danny's story never existed. We also got an understanding of when his dissociative identity disorder began.
But one thing that remained unclear was the scope of how many of these identities existed.
I thought I had everything figured out about who was real and who was not, so it was surprising to learn that even Jonny and Mike were never real.
My heart broke for this boy who had never known love, companionship, or friendship. Imagining how lonely he must have been all those years living alone was an utterly destroying thought.

Apple TV’s newest thriller series, The Crowded Room, starring Tom Holland and Amanda Seyfried, released the mid-season episode this week, and right off the bat, we’ve got to tell you, be careful as you watch it. It was bad enough that Danny Sullivan was almost sexually assaulted in Episode 3, but this episode really shows just how severely traumatic Danny’s life has actually been. If there was any lingering doubt, it was laid to rest after it became clear that Danny Sullivan was not well, revealing most his narrated events didn't happen as described.
Danny ran away to London (or did he?) after his failed attempt to murder Marlin on The Crowded Room Season 1 Episode 4.
Left without anyone to consult after Ariana disappeared, Danny entered panic mode, and the next thing he knew, he was on a plane to London, where he believed his father lived.
But instead of finding his father, he met a former associate, Jack, who conveniently told a story of Peter's whereabouts.
Right after shooting Marlin, Danny knew that he had messed up; not a tiny mess like leaving the lights on, but a huge one.
As a child, he had a limited view of the world, and like most children, the only safe place he knew was with his parents.

Who Is Jack?
As the interrogation of Danny Sullivan continues, he reveals where he’d flown to after taking the passport and money from Yitzhak. Based on the bobbies and the red telephone booths, it doesn’t take us long to guess that Danny is in London and finds himself completely hapless.

Tom Holland is having a rough morning. Not because he partied too hard the night before — though the Marvel Studios superstar had enough reasons to, what with it being his birthday and the world premiere at New York’s MoMA of The Crowded Room, the Apple TV+ series that he both stars in and executive produced.
But Holland quit drinking alcohol a year and a half ago. No, this particular migraine comes from waking up to learn that Crowded Room — what Holland deems the “hardest thing I’ve ever done” (this according to a guy who has played Spider-Man in six feature films) — has been met by rough early reviews.

Updated, 9:25 Am: Tom Holland is clarifying remarks he made earlier about taking a year-long break from acting after wrapping up The Crowded Room. In an appearance Tuesday on Live with Kelly and Mark, Holland said he’s already eight months in to his break, which began after The Crowded Room wrapped last year. He also gave fans a shout-out, thanking them for support of the show, which he admits initially had poor reviews.
“I would like to say a massive thank you to my fans, and the people that have seen the show because we’re at 94% on Rotten Tomatoes,” he said. “I feel so grateful that I have a wonderful community of people that support me and are there for me, so I’m honored and really excited for the rest of the show to come out.”

If you miss Tom Holland on the big screen in the coming year, blame The Crowded Room. Marvel’s Spider-Man revealed that the Apple TV+ series took so much out of him, it prompted his break from acting to care for his mental health. Holland stars as Danny Sullivan in the drama in addition to executive producing. Danny is loosely based on “The Campus Rapist” Billy Milligan, the man at the center of a highly publicized court case in 1970s Ohio. Milligan was arrested for the robbery, kidnapping, and rape of three women on Ohio State University’s campus. He was the first defendant found not guilty on the basis of dissociative identity disorder. He subsequently spent eight years in jails and psychiatric hospitals. Playing Danny required Holland to explore “certain emotions that I have definitely never experienced before,” he told ExtraTV, noting that his producer duties added an “extra level of pressure.

Spoiler Alert: This review contains spoilers from “The Crowded Room.”
Over 20 years ago, screenwriter Akiva Goldsman penned the script for “A Beautiful Mind,” the Oscar-winning biopic of mathematician and diagnosed schizophrenic John Nash. To convey Nash’s subjective experience of his condition, “A Beautiful Mind” pulled a bait-and-switch. Early in the film, we meet Nash’s college roommate, who becomes his lifelong friend; later, it’s revealed the roommate was a figment of Nash’s imagination. At the time, the twist was effective enough to earn Goldsman an Academy Award for Best Adapted Screenplay.
The limited series “The Crowded Room,” created by Goldsman for Apple TV+, attempts the same trick to greatly diminished returns. A simple Wikipedia search shows that “The Crowded Room” was inspired by Billy Milligan, the first defendant acquitted by invoking a case of dissociative identity disorder in the late 1970s. Tom Holland is taking a much-needed break from the big screen. In an interview published on June 6, the 27-year-old actor told Extra he's decided to take a year-long break from acting. This decision comes after wrapping up the Apple TV+ series "The Crowded Room," in which he worked as the series lead and executive producer. The 10-episode "true-crime adjacent" project draws inspiration from the story of real-life Billy Milligan. Holland's character, Danny Sullivan, parallels Milligan's sexual-assault crimes and mental illness, including his dissociative identity disorder diagnosis.
"It was a tough time, for sure," Holland said about the making of the show. "We were exploring certain emotions that I have definitely never experienced before. And then on top of that, being an executive producer, dealing with the day-to-day problems that come with any film set, just added that extra level of pressure."
