To coincide with the good news from Fox that new episodes of Futurama are coming, we review the Blu-ray release of what once looked like the series finale, Futurama: Into the Wild Green Yonder.
In some respects Futurama could be considered the poor cousin of The Simpsons. Both shows were created by Matt Groening and both share the same style of animation and satirical humour. Yet, Futurama has not enjoyed the same widespread popularity as its Fox stablemate. Whereas The Simpsons (no relation) has been running for 20 seasons on that network, Futurama lasted only four (a fifth aired but was comprised of episodes that had not been shown in previous years).
Despite that relatively short run, Futurama attracted a dedicated following. This prompted the Cartoon Network, and later Comedy Central, to pick up the show for syndication. The viewing figures convinced the latter to commit to sixteen new episodes that...

Futurama: Into the Wild Green Yonder brings the Futurama series back from the lesser performances of the second and third direct to DVD releases. When I slid the Blu-ray into my PS3 about five different thoughts flitted through my head: please be great, please be really great, please be great, please be funny, please be great. I wasn't being all that creative at the time as my mind's obsession with a suitable ending(?) to the Futurama series had been plaguing my thoughts since the third Futurama movie failed to impress. Bender's Game took stale jokes and put them into the Futurama universe. I recognized the necessity to pay lip service to a genre of nerdery that had been neglected thus far in the Futurama movies - but it had gone too far on too little material. Into the Wild Green Yonder makes no such mistake.

Chicago – Still trying to get over an Oscar hangover? There’s no better way to deflate the pomposity of awards season than with a wicked car chase. Of course, one of the best of all time hit Blu-Ray this week in the controversial Blu-Ray release of “The French Connection,” but the same studio also released another pair of movies dedicated to automobile aficionados and an animated sci-fi comedy when all the metal destruction gets too much to take.
Two of the best car movies of all time - 1971’s “Vanishing Point” and 1998’s “Ronin” - hit Blu-Ray for the first time this week and the final “Futurama” movie, “Into the Wild Green Yonder” also hit the format. All three of these titles were released on February 24th, 2009.
