What Even is 'Retro Anime'? Epic Anime Debates - Main Image
At Epicstream, our team regularly debate the big questions around anime fandom. This week, with the release of T.P Bon on Netflix, we decided to ask what makes a retro anime so retro.
Most of us conjure a specific image when considering a loaded phrase like retro anime. However, how much is retro to do with a particular show's style and how much is it to do with our own experiences of anime growing up?
Check out what our experts had to say and join the conversation in the comments!
Cathlyn: "Retro is About Art Styles"
When we talk about retro anime, two or three things come to mind: the anime's time of release, visual techniques, and genre tropes. After all, retro anime often reflects character archetypes and distinctive art styles prevalent during the time of their production.

There is almost zero subtlety in Lakadbaggha. The title is literal, as it is indeed about a hyena saving the day. For the uninitiated, Lakadbaggha is the Hindi word for the animal. The one we see in the movie looks quite artificial, though, thanks to shoddy VFX. In fact, the effect of budget constraints is visible throughout the movie. It doesn’t exactly look that polished; in fact, a lot of frames appear to be downright amateurish. I am not on a mission to massacre Victor Mukherjee’s movie with harsh words. In fact, it is just the opposite. I am getting the criticism out of the way first, because I have all the praise in the world for Lakadbaggha, which, despite all the issues, was an incredibly satisfactory watch for me.

A lot can be said about a movie that bets its core message on a plot about dogs going missing. Sure, cute dogs are used in movies all the time, but Lakadbaggha by Victor Mukherjee isn’t just using dogs’ cultural or sentimental value to drive home its point. Its characters are embroiled in a philosophical battle happening in the background, while the topic of animal abuse grips us in the foreground.
Lakadbaggha revolves around Tarun Bakshi, a young man who works as a delivery boy for a courier service but has a hidden life as a dog-loving vigilante. He starts taking down the goons of a trafficker who is dealing in drugs and dog meat. Tarun soon finds himself hounded by both him and the police after he rescues a rare hyena.

ReviewDisappointingly, the narrative of ‘Asvins’ follows one of the most boring, overdone tropes – that of a group of friends visiting a haunted place, leading to trouble. Director Tarun Teja’s Asvins begins with a legend of the twin gods from the Rig Veda, who possess the power to heal and even resurrect the dead. This leads one to think that Asvins is a mythological horror film. But it does not take long to figure out that it is a fusion of both mythological and psychological horror, especially when Tarun Tej takes you through the landscape of the huge haunted mansion in the film, with a garden that resembles the hedge maze from the iconic Hollywood classic The Shining. Disappointingly though, the narrative of Asvins follows one of the most boring, overdone tropes – that of a group of friends visiting a haunted place, leading to trouble. Arjun (Vasanth Ravi), his wife...

Late actor-director Satish Kaushik will soon be seen in one of his last films titled ‘Mirg’, which is ready for release after rounding up its post-production work.
The film also features Raj Babbar, Anup Soni and Shwetaabh Singh in pivotal roles.
The film, which is centred around the legend of the mountain leopard popular in the lower regions of Himachal Pradesh, is a genre-bending story of a heist-gone-wrong revenge drama.
Talking about the film, director Tarun Sharma said: “My main aim while approaching ‘Mirg’ was to give the audience an engaging film. Every aspect of filmmaking should come together to create something engaging, transporting people into an alternate reality.”
“That for me is the magic of cinema. I was blessed with a wonderful and involved crew. Having stalwarts like Raj Babbar, Satish Kaushik and Anup Soni in my debut film was a blessing,” he said.

There are very few movies that create a universal talking point. In the recent past we have seen this happen with Baahubali when everyone was curious about ‘Katappa ne Bahubali ko kyu mara’, which was the cliff-hanger of the first part. On the same lines Drishyam had so much of impact on the audience that its key plot became almost synonym with the date 2nd October!
Drishyam was made by the master storyteller late Nishikant Kamat on the story by Jeethu Joseph. Post the sad demise of Nishikant Kamat the director’s baton was passed on to Abhishek Pathak. One would understand the uphill task that he would have gone through with a benchmark already set in terms of Drishyam and not just that, but Drishyam 2 already released in various south languages and already available on Ott platforms. A nation with a population of over 130 crore, India’s major challenges have been the urban and rural divide, disparities among people towards access to healthcare and also the underfunded healthcare systems.
Post-Independence, India’s public health sphere has been grappling with multiple issues like low life expectancy, high infant mortality rate, women’s healthcare, restricted access to proper healthcare for rural population and unequal ratio of trained medical professionals.
However, India has made significant progress in several parameters and most importantly in population control measures in recent times. The Total Fertility Rate (Tfr), an average number of children per woman, has declined from 2.2 to 2 at the national level.
As per the National Family Health Survey-5, there are only five states in India – Bihar (2.98), Meghalaya (2.91), Uttar Pradesh (2.35), Jharkhand (2.26) Manipur (2.17) – which have above replacement level of fertility of 2.1.

Back in 2015, we had reported that Anees Bazmee was set on making the sequel to the 2002 crime caper Aankhen. In fact Bazmee had confirmed the same and had even started casting for the film. However, we now hear that a case of copyright infringement has been filed by Rajtaru Studios Limited against Bazmee and Gaurang Doshi. Speaking about the same Tarun Agarwal of Rajtaru Studios Limited says, "We had acquired the rights of the film Aankhen from Gaurang years back, and along with that we also had the rights to make its sequel. So how can Gaurang and Anees make the sequel without permission?" Further talking about the issue Tarun adds, "In 2014 we had filed a case with the High Court for copyright infringement, later the same year in its ruling, the High Court had ordered an injunction on making the film and had directed Gaurang and Bazmee to refrain from talking about the same.
