- Daughter of West Point cadet William Whedbee Kirkland, Tyler's father fought with the South in the Civil War and served as a 2nd Lieutenant in the U.S. Marine Corps for five years. Tyler began acting at the age of 16 and worked with Charles Frohman and William Faversham for a number of years in musical comedy, making her debut in 'The Private Secretary.' She was a very popular comedienne and actress with the Madison Square Company from 1884 to 1885. Married to actor Donald MacLean Shepherd, they appeared on stage in a number of Shakespearean productions, including 'Romeo and Juliet.' A number of the most prominent critics in the country claimed that Tyler's 'Juliet' was the best they'd seen on stage. In 1906 she appeared on Broadway in 'The Love Route' with Elmer Booth and Guy Standing. Tyler also authored a book entitled 'Boss [A Story of Virginia Life].'
