- His catchphrase "Keep 'Em Peeled" was from the spin-off of Police 5 aimed at younger viewers called Junior Police 5. The reason the show was called Police 5 was because it only lasted 5 minutes! Featuring him in a small studio with occasional stills, it was far removed from the hi-tech, fast paced Crimewatch: UK.

- His father worked for the Gas Light and Coke Company and his mother was employed in the local box factory.
- Served in the RAF prior to training at RADA.
- Presented in 1972 a series of short public information films for Tyne Tees Television urging drivers to fasten their seat belts for the sake of their families with the slogan "Your Safety is Their Security".
- In 1976 Shaw was added as a New Faces panellist as the result of a double accident. Jimmy Henney had originally been booked to appear but injured his leg. Jack Parnell then agreed to stand in but was given the wrong date and didn't turn up. Shaw happened to be in the next studio ready to record 'Police Five' and was drafted in.
- Awarded the MBE in the 1986 New Year honours.
