Watch out, Mario, because Link's right behind you! "The Legend of Zelda," arguably Nintendo's second most-famous franchise, is getting its own movie adaptation -- but this time, it'll be in live-action. According to Nintendo, director Wes Ball is set to direct the film, which will be produced by video game creator Shigeru Miyamoto ("The Super Mario Bros. Movie") and Avi Arad ("Spider-Man"). Nintendo and Sony Pictures Entertainment will co-produce the film, with Nintendo providing more than half of the financing, and Sony will handle theatrical distribution around the globe. This isn't the first time someone's tried to make a live-action version of the world of Hyrule, but hopefully Sony Pictures has better luck than Netflix did with their ill-fated attempt at an adaptation a few years back.
Plans for a "Legend of Zelda" movie are still in the nascent stages, of course, but it's also pretty exciting, because...

This month sees the launch of Super Mario Bros. Wonder: the first new Super Mario game on the Nintendo Switch since 2017’s Super Mario Odyssey and the first side-scrolling Super Mario game since 2012’s New Super Mario Bros. U on the Wii U.
While there’s plenty of buzz about Wonder being the first Super Mario game to feature a different voice actor for Mario (instead of franchise veteran Charles Martinet) in over 25 years, the game also marks the return of prolific Nintendo developer Takashi Tezuka, who serves as Super Mario Bros. Wonder’s producer.
A presence with the Super Mario series since the beginning, Tezuka is the unsung figure behind making the video game hero a global icon and figurehead of the entire video game industry.

The Super Mario Bros. are everywhere these days. With international theme parks, a billion-dollar movie, and toys and Lego flooding the shelves of every store, the boys from Brooklyn are really getting around. With that ubiquity, it’s hard to believe that there hasn’t been a new 2D, “traditional” Mario game in over 10 years with the release of New Super Mario Bros. Wii U.
And while there’s been waves of 3D adventures, parties, karting, and every kind of sport outing, it’s fitting that now — at the height...

Even the most casual gamers have at least some familiarity with The Legend of Zelda games. The series was an instant hit from the moment it launched on the Famicom Disk System in 1986, and since then it’s only become more popular thanks to new entries that consistently reinvent the franchise (and even video games as a whole).
With such a lengthy history and more than a dozen mainline entries, there’s no shortage of obscure Zelda trivia out there. But while you might know about the complicated timeline or the terrible CD-i games, these are 15 facts that even the most diehard fans probably never knew about The Legend of Zelda as we look forward to the upcoming release of Tears of the Kingdom.

Nintendo games are full of memorable character designs, many of which even non-gamers recognize. Out of all of those designs, though, Link and his green tunic are arguably the most recognizable. Nintendo makes it a point to ensure nearly every Legend of Zelda game includes the iconic tunic, but why? The games and lore make it abundantly clear almost every Link is a different person despite their shared personalities and seeming inability to speak, so why do they all dress the same?
Let’s start at the beginning. According to an interview with the magazine Gamekult (translated by Polygon), Shigeru Miyamoto stated the tunic design was selected due to themes and hardware limitations. The Nes only let the team use three colors, and since the original Legend of Zelda title had so many forests (or at least what the console could render as forests), green was ultimately selected for Link’s clothes.

In an industry where even great creators often remain anonymous, game designer, producer, and director Shigeru Miyamoto has rightfully achieved superstar status. As the creative mind behind such revolutionary franchises as Super Mario, The Legend of Zelda, and Donkey Kong, Miyamoto has helped turn Nintendo into a company synonymous with the very idea of video games. His early titles are the reason that many of us started playing video games, and many of them remain undisputed classics to this day.
Yet, the very first game that Miyamoto ever designed exclusively for the Nes/Famicom console has never been ported to the U.S. In fact, it’s the only game that Miyamoto designed that has never been ported to North America to this day.
Anyone familiar with Miyamoto’s history and significance is typically stunned by that information. Sure, Nintendo hasn’t always been the best when it comes to...

Super Mario has his own course designer, but what about Zelda? A fan-made maker allows you to create your own top-down dungeons...
As we recently found out, Super Mario Maker is a more than worthy celebration of the Italian plumber's 30th anniversary. But the game's producer Takashi Tezuka has warned that fans shouldn't expect to see anything similar for Nintendo's other classic titles - particularly The Legend Of Zelda, which he says would be a "difficult task."
That hasn't stopped Justin Sink from creating his own, highly unofficial Zelda Maker, which allows you to design your own maps and dungeons in the style of the old, classic Nes and Snes games. It's all dangerously copyright infringing, of course, and Sink clearly knows this, as a YouTube description explains:

Super Mario Maker allows fans to their own stages. It highlights both Nintendo's design brilliance and how difficult course-building is...
It was difficult to hold back a minor ripple of cynicism when Super Mario Maker was given 2015 as its release date. A Legend of Zelda movie hasn't quite been confirmed yet, but two prominent Nintendo designers have shared their takes on what type of person should play Link.

There are about eight Mario adventures that could easily be listed within the lexicon of the greatest games ever made, and Super Mario World and Super Mario World 2: Yoshi’s Island, released for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System sit on that list. Super Mario World helped define the 16-bit era, transforming the classic Mario formula into something bigger, faster, brighter, and some would say, better. Meanwhile the follow-up, Yoshi’s Island, is a wonderful vision of pastel colors, majestic landscapes, and beautiful sprites that represent a mishmash of creativity, and imagination that only Nintendo could bring to life.
As the story goes, Shigeru Miyamoto wanted Mario to be able to ride a dinosaur and actually conceived the idea during the 8-bit days but the limitations of the Nintendo Entertainment System made it impossible to include the additional character on the first four games in the series. It’s almost unfair that the latest Yoshi’s Island has been stuck with Nintendo’s “new” label. I mean, New Super Mario Bros is enjoyable enough, but I don’t think anyone would call it the cream of the crop in a conversation on modern 2D platformers anymore. It simply re-paints a timeless game idea every year or two for the widest possible audience – nothing more, nothing less. Well Nsmb, Yoshi’s New Island just raised the bar. Snap! Not only is it the complete opposite of a rehash, but it’s a well-worthy sequel to one of the greatest 2D platformers of all time, bringing enough fresh ideas to prop it firmly on its own two feet. When I think of “new,” that’s what I expect, damnit.
Yoshi’s New Island uses the original game as its rock-solid core, aping both story and fundamental gameplay mechanics from the Snes classic.

In the wake of announcing the current sales tally for its thriving handheld, Nintendo pegged the release date for Yoshi’s New Island — the spiritual sequel to Super Mario World 2: Yoshi’s Island — which will launch across North America on March 14. In addition, the game will be available at retail and through the company’s digital eShop.
Retaining the age-old, side-scrolling charm of the Snes original, Yoshi’s New Island will see players explore a colourful vista once again as everyone’s favourite tongue-twister. Not only that, as you manoeuvre the mountable green dino through each level, you’ll be tasked with protecting Baby Mario, who’s also along for the adventure.
Development of the new 3Ds title is being handled through Takashi Tezuka, who served as creative director on the original iteration of Yoshi’s Island back in 1995. Its sequel, which was originally announced at E3 last year...

No, this wasn't a suggestion of some lowly intern who was immediately fired the next day, it was the idea of Shigeru Miyamoto and Takashi Tezuka, the main men in charge of the game.
According to Satoru Takizawa, Wind Waker's design manager:
"Now that the eyes had gotten much larger, we wanted to make their facial expressions richer by increasing the number of patterns for the eyes and mouth. Partway through, we even talked about having beams come out of those eyes!

All it takes is a glimpse of the upcoming Yoshi Wii U game revealed during the Nintendo Direct presentation this morning to know that it comes from the same folks behind the 2010 platformer Kirby’s Epic Yarn. The new game has the same art style — although this time it’s in stunning HD — as Hal Laboratory and Good-Feel’s Wii title and appears to have at least some of the same gameplay mechanics.
Despite showing off a bit of footage for the title, Nintendo was mighty stingy with details about the Yoshi Wii U game and even refused to announce its official name. The only other concrete bit of information that was mentioned was that Takashi Tezuka (the director behind Yoshi’s Island and the N64 title Yoshi’s Story) is supervising development on the upcoming game.

Yoshi, the world's favorite green dinosaur, hasn't starred in his own console game since "Yoshi's Story" launched on Nintendo 64 back in 1998. However, Nintendo revealed this morning that all of that is about to change, confirming a brand new Yoshi game for Wii U is currently in development.
The game is being developed by the same team responsible for "Kirby's Epic Yarn" with Takashi Tezuka -- director of "Yoshi's Island" and "Yoshi's Story" -- supervising the development. Just like Epic Yarn, the still unnamed Wii U Yoshi game will be set in a fanciful world of yarn and textiles.
No release date has been confirmed, but there are a couple more screens for you to check out below!
So, what do you think? Is Yarn Yoshi a game you'll be picking up? Hit the comments section and let us know!

Updates on the Virtual Console and load times weren't the only things Nintendo talked about in this morning's Nintendo Direct; they also announced a slew of new games, some features for ones we knew about, and some swanky trailers to boot. We've gathered up all the news and trailers for you in one spot, so come in to learn about when you'll see the new Mario game, and learn a little more about The Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker HD version!
Let's handle some important things first, and then I'll let the press release (that came along after Nintendo Direct ended) take over. First, a new Super Mario game is coming from the creators of Super Mario Galaxy, and it will be another 3D adventure. Fortunately it will be fully revealed at this year's E3, along with a new Mario Kart for the Wii U.

A new music show is being launched on Channel Ten's digital channel Eleven in 2012. The currently unnamed entertainment programme, which will be aired on Saturday mornings next year, is believed to have been introduced to replace the void left by old music show Video Hits, which was axed a few months ago after 25 years on Aussie television. According to The Daily Telegraph, the new series will be hosted by Scott Tweedie, after he was poached from ABC3 children's show Prank Patrol. Producers of the programme are now looking for a female co-host over the age of 18 and have set up an open casting call on Eleven's website. > Channel Ten auditions stars for new Andrew Rochford breakfast show

The Legend of Zelda turns 33 today, so we're looking back at how the franchise was born...
The evolution of video games as we play them today is the result of dozens of development studios and the hard work and ideas of hundreds of individuals. At the same time, few people working in the industry have had quite as much influence as Shigeru Miyamoto, who’s widely recognized as one of the most important figures in gaming history. The creative mind behind, among many other things, Donkey Kong and Super Mario, there’s scarcely a genre that hasn’t, in some form, felt the impact of Miyamoto’s ideas.
During the development of what would become the enormously successful Super Mario Bros. – which would go on to sell more than 40 million copies around the world in the years after its release in 1985 – Miyamoto began work on what is...

Anybody who’s played video games, whether you’re an avid player or only have done so every once in awhile, knows that one of the most beloved properties of all time in the Nintendo universe next to Super Mario Bros is The Legend of Zelda. The ceremony will be part of the many events taking place at this year’s 2011 Video Game Awards. Read on to see what everyone else has to say about the sudden and...

Since the launch of the App Store, Capcom has been pretty supportive of Apple's handheld as a gaming device. So far we've seen "Mega Man," "Ghosts and Goblins," "Street Fighter" and "Resident Evil" games on the iPhone and apparently that's just the beginning. Speaking with Takashi Tezuka, the general manager of mobile content for Capcom, I asked which franchises we can expect to see making the jump over to the iPhone. His response was pretty straight-forward:
"Whatever you can think of is coming on iPhone!"
Admittedly that doesn't take into account the possibility that he thought I was a moron and could only think of four Capcom franchises, but I'm pretty sure the implication (since he wouldn't elaborate) is that all of their major franchises will be getting iPhone releases in the future. Great news for "Bionic Commando," "Marvel vs. Capcom" and "Quiz & Dragons" fans!
