He was a flutist and singer-songwriter who started out in rock and blues bands in Birmingham (UK). In 1964, he co-founded the Moody Blues with fellow musicians who included keyboardist Mike Pinder and guitarist-singer Denny Laine.
His grandfather was a flutist, which inspired him to learn the instrument.
