Twenty years is a long time -- for a relationship or a TV series like Grey's Anatomy. Just when you think there's nothing more to do, surprise!
Fans continue to tune into Grey's every season for the latest medical cases, relationship drama, and robust storytelling.
We don't get as much Meredith these days, but there is still enough to satisfy viewers, including the relationship mishaps with her new love interest.
While the show doesn't have the same pizzazz and character compatibility as it did in the early years, there is plenty of relationship messiness to entice fans.
But no matter how great -- or bad -- things get at Gsm, some relationships have happened in the last 20 years that fans will never forget. And some never got the ending they deserve.
Here is a list of our favorite on-screen Grey's Anatomy 'ships of all time.

If there is one thing inevitable about getting attached to a doctor on Grey's Anatomy, you're toying with fire.
Numerous beloved cast members have come and gone from the hit hospital drama since it first aired in 2005.
One of those characters is Dr. Arizona Robbins (Jessica Capshaw), which fans saw the return of in Grey's Anatomy Season 20 Episode 4.
Dr. Robbins has undoubtedly had one of the most exciting story arcs in the show.
She played a pivotal and inspirational character during the roughly nine years she was an attending surgeon and chief of pediatric surgery.
After six years of not being on the show, she returned for Grey's Anatomy Season 20 Episode 4 to perform a revolutionary fetal brain surgery.
Astonishing, to say the least, but did her return hit us in the feels the way we had hoped?

Another week, another traumatic episode of a Shonda Rhimes show that centers around a vulnerable group.
On Station 19 Season 7 Episode 3, the firehouse fam attends a Pride parade to celebrate Seattle's LGBTQ+ community. For a full recap and review, check out TV Fanatic Jasmine Blu's expert take on True Colors!
During the Pride parade, a car backfires, the sound is mistaken for a gunshot, and chaos erupts. As painful as it is, this is an entirely predictable series of events because Shondaland loves to give marginalized communities a tragedy to rally around.
Don't get us wrong. We love this universe. Everything Shonda Rhimes touches turns to gold.
But we'd be remiss if we ignored the fact that sometimes it's hard to stomach some of the painful storylines vulnerable communities have to endure in the worlds she builds.
Looking back on the history of Shonda's television empire, it's clear that this isn't a new phenomenon.

Grey’s Anatomy fans will see the return of several big characters this spring.
One of the people returning to the Grey’s Anatomy cast is the actress who played Arizona. But we aren’t going to see Callie, it seems.
In the run-up to the new season of Grey’s Anatomy, it was revealed that Jessica Capshaw is returning to play Dr. Arizona Robbins again.
Arizona was a fan-favorite character, but she left Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital in Season 14 to move to New York.
The move was so her daughter Sophia could be closer to her other mom – Dr. Callie Torres.
Actress Sara Ramirez played Callie for years. She left the show at the end of Grey’s Anatomy Season 12 when Callie developed a relationship with Penny Blake (played by Samantha Sloyan) and moved to New York.
Why is Callie not returning to Grey’s Anatomy with Arizona?

Che Diaz is moving out of And Just Like That.
Sara Ramírez, the star who has played the controversial character on Max’s Sex and the City offshoot for its first two seasons, will not return for the upcoming third season of the series. Sources caution that while scripts are still being written, there’s always a potential for Ramírez to pop in for an episode.
The internet has speculated for weeks that Ramírez, who previously played Grey’s Anatomy fan-favorite Callie Torres, would not be returning for Ajlt’s upcoming season following a string of posts on their social media. A month ago, Ramírez shared a post in which they seemed to allege that Ajlt introduced Che — the franchise’s first nonbinary character — as a way not to be inclusive but rather as “performative” lip service toward the LGBTQIA2S+ community.

Look who’s roller-skating back into Grey Sloan Memorial: Jessica Capshaw will return to play Dr. Arizona Robbins in the upcoming 20th season of Grey’s Anatomy. Meanwhile, Alex Landi is coming back to play Dr. Nico Kim in Season 20 while Natalie Morales and Freddy Miyares guest-star, according to Deadline. Capshaw was last seen on Grey’s Anatomy in 2018, when Arizona, a pediatric surgeon, headed to New York City for a possible reunion with ex-wife Callie Torres (Sara Ramirez) in the Season 14 finale. Both Capshaw and costar Sarah Drew were let go from the ABC medical drama at the end of Season 14 — much to fans’ outrage — though Drew has guest-starred in two more episodes since. Since her time on Grey’s, Capshaw has appeared in the 2020 Netflix movie Holidate and the first season of Hulu’s Tell Me Lies. John Fleeno/ABC Landi recurred on Grey’s throughout Seasons 15 and 18, with his...

When “Grey’s Anatomy” viewers last saw Jessica Capshaw as Arizona Robbins — at the end of the ABC drama’s 14th season — she was moving to New York City so her daughter Sofia could be with both of her parents. But at the Television Critics Association Press Tour in Pasadena on Saturday, ABC announced that Capshaw will be among the show’s Season 20 guest stars and will appear on one episode.
Alex Landi, who’s appeared as orthopedic surgeon Nico Kim since Season 15, will also return to the show as a guest star.
Natalie Morales and Freddy Miyares (“When They See Us”), meanwhile, will make their “Grey’s Anatomy” debuts. Morales will play Monica Beltran, who, according to her character description, is “a pediatric surgeon whose pragmatism and level-headedness have made her one of the best in her field.” And Miyares will be among the recurring cast as Dorian, who is “an intelligent,...

Expect to see some familiar faces returning to Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital soon.
Jessica Capshaw is set to guest star in Season 20 of Grey’s Anatomy, reprising her beloved role as Dr. Arizona Robbins. Also Alex Landi will return as Dr. Nico Kim.
No word yet on how, exactly, these two will make their way back to Grey Sloan. Capshaw joined the cast in Season 5 and remained until Season 14, when Arizona left Seattle during the finale to move to New York so that her daughter Sophia could be closer to her other mom, Dr. Callie Torres (Sara Ramirez).
Landi recurred on the show from Seasons 15 to 18, before exiting in May 2022. While he was on the show, he was in an on-again off-again relationship with his co-worker Dr. Levi Schmitt (Jake Borelli), who is still on the show.
Additionally, Grey’s Anatomy is also adding two new faces, Natalie Morales and Freddy Miyares.

Let’s rewind back to the beginning, as all good romcoms do. The year is 2014, and How I Met Your Mother just alienated a majority of its fanbase with one of the most divisive endings in TV history: series schmuck Ted Mosby (Josh Radnor) rekindling the flame with his best friend and on-again-off-again love interest Robin Scherbatsky (Cobie Smulders). As Ted rocked up to Robin’s apartment with the iconic blue French horn he had stolen years ago, to lovingly commemorate their first date, she tearfully conceded. While many have condemned the finale, claiming Ted and Robin were never meant to be, I was – and still remain – its fiercest defender. This idea that “the one” would always come back, no matter what, made 17-year-old me fall in love with the concept of love. Or at least TV’s idealised, butterflies-in-the-tummy version of it.

In just 10 episodes of “And Just Like That …,” HBO Max’s successful revival of “Sex and the City,” Che Diaz became the most visible (and often most ridiculed) queer character on TV. We’ll get to why in a second. But for those who love Che, do not fear. Sara Ramírez, the nonbinary actor who plays the nonbinary podcaster, comedian and aspiring sitcom star who falls in love with Miranda Hobbes and breaks up her marriage, will be back on the second season of “And Just Like That …” with an even more robust storyline.
When we last saw Che, they were heading to Los Angeles with Miranda (who’d dyed her gray hair red again to represent her sexual awakening), and the new season of “And Just Like That …” will pick up three weeks later. With time comes aging right? A few more wrinkles, a few more greys, and a slower metabolism. Apparently, this is not always the case for the following TV characters, and it's something that goes far beyond a good makeup artist.
It's amazing watching certain characters grow, especially characters that started off young and mature with the show.

The diversity of lesbian representation on TV has finally begun to span ethnicities and ages, but one area that seems to be lagging is representation beyond lipstick lesbians.
Quickly, to define some terms:
Butch exude predominantly masculine traits -- short hair, manly fashion, and are sometimes broader in physical build.
Lipsticks look traditionally feminine, girlier in fashion, and are often confused with straight women.
Chapsticks are usually a hybrid between the two. They portray a feminine physicality but typically have a sportier/masculine fashion.

Some shows become part of us, and we become addicted to some of the cast members while others, we love to hate. Therefore, when they leave the screen, we are disappointed, especially when they disappear suddenly. For a show like “Grey’s Anatomy,” we just never expected some of the cast members to leave the show so soon. Let’s take a look at the exit of 15 of the cast members and the circumstances leading up to their disappearance. 1. Callie Torres Although Callie had appeared in season two, she became a leading cast member in the third season through to

I quickly want to preface this with saying I am not trying to diminish the amazing diversity brought on by Grey's Anatomy Season 15. I am merely trying to state an observation.
I too am a die-hard fan of the show!
With the very sad exit of many strong and diverse characters including Christina Yang, Callie Torres, Arizona Robins, April Kepner, etc. Grey's Anatomy was at the potential of losing its relevance to the current times.
To combat this, it seems they tried to pack a new diversity into these last two seasons in an unrealistic manner.
Beginning with Grey's Anatomy Season 14, the new class of interns brought on at Grey Sloan Memorial featured one of the most diverse groups since the beginning of the show.
Many of them offering "firsts" for Shondaland's portrayal of gay, trans, Muslim, and Southeast Asian characters.
In the harshest way possible, they almost act as...

A Grey's Anatomy encore for Sara Ramirez just got a whole lot more likely:
Ramirez has confirmed that her stint on CBS drama Madam Secretary will not hold up a potential return to her role as Callie Torres on the medical drama.
“For the record @CBS has been nothing but gracious and generous to me," the actress shared via Twitter on Wednesday. "They are open to Callie coming back! The ball is in @ABCNetwork’s court.”
This has seemingly quashed claims that CBS was to blame for Ramirez not staging an encore on Grey's Anatomy.
It all started in August when Grey's creator, Shonda Rhimes, addressed Ramirez's future with the show during in Instagram Q&A and said the following:
“Let me tell you something — we tried,” Rhimes said at the time.

Could Dr. Callie Torres return to Seattle? Former “Grey’s Anatomy” star Sara Ramirez hinted on Wednesday that she was interested in returning to the ABC medical drama. Grey’s Anatomy alum Sara Ramirez is revealing via Twitter that a return to Grey’s may be in the offing. Ramirez, who played Dr. Callie Torres for 10 seasons before exiting the show in 2016, addressed speculation that her series regular role on CBS’ Madam Secretary is preventing her from returning to Grey’s in future guest spots.
“For the record @CBS has been nothing but gracious and generous to me. They are open to Callie coming back! The ball is in @ABCNetwork’s court,” Torres wrote Wednesday.
Grey’s Anatomy creator Shonda Rhimes suggested in an Instagram Q&A last month that she had tried to recruit Ramirez for a return appearance on the medical drama without success. “Let me tell you something — we tried,” Rhimes said during the Q&A. “CBS has a hold of her. Because she’s on [Madam Secretary] and we can’t get her. But we love her.

Everyone give a warm Seattle welcome to Dr. Nico Kim! TVLine reports that the new doctor, played by relative newcomer Alex Landi, is set to join Grey's Anatomy's upcoming 15th season when it debuts at the end of September, and he's going to make history for one very important reason: Nico will be the series's first gay male surgeon.
Over the course of the last 14 years, there has obviously been plenty of Lgbtq+ representation on the medical drama. Callie Torres (Sara Ramirez), a bisexual surgeon, was in a passionate (and rocky) relationship with lesbian Arizona Robbins (Jessica Capshaw) for years. In the more recent seasons, intern Casey (played by Alex Blue Davis) comes out as "a proud trans man" to Dr. Bailey in the season 14 episode "Out of Nowhere." That being said, none of the prominent Lgbtq+ characters have been male surgeons.
As for Landi, the NYC-born actor is...

Hey, "Grey's Anatomy" fans. We're back at you with another huge report in regards to what's going down in the upcoming 15th season of your favorite medical drama. It turns out that the Grey's Anatomy production team has been very busy at work, casting yet another new male to join the ensemble. This new male will be the first of it's kind though. First of all, he will be a surgeon. According to TVline.com, Grey's Anatomy has never brought on a surgeon role. The other unique thing about this new male is that he's gay. TV line pointed out that there haven't been many gay, male characters on the show in the past. We've obviously seen gay females with the the Callie Torres and Arizona Robbins characters and so on and so forth, but not many men. This new male surgeon will go by the name of Dr. Nico Kim.

Fifteen seasons later and there are still firsts for Grey's Anatomy. The long-running ABC medical drama is adding its first gay male surgeon to the cast. Alex Landi will play Dr. Nico Kim on a recurring basis in the upcoming season. It's about time. "Very grateful. Thank you to everyone who has made this possible," Landi posted on Instagram. Grey's Anatomy is no stranger to Lgbtq characters. Sara Ramirez's Dr. Callie Torres and Jessica Capshaw's Dr. Arizona Robbins, both gay doctors on the series who have since left the series, are two of the show's most beloved characters. And, yes, of course there have been gay male characters on the show before, but not as surgeons. This is good for...

Grey Sloan Memorial’s Lgbt population is on the rise. Grey’s Anatomy has tapped relative newcomer Alex Landi to join the Season 15 cast as Dr. Nico Kim, the series’ first gay male surgeon, TVLine has learned exclusively.
Landi — who is half Korean and half Italian — will kick off his recurring stint this fall. ABC confirmed the casting but declined to provide additional details about Landi’s character or the length of his stay.

Paging Dr. Teddy Altman! After reprising her role on Grey's Anatomy in guest appearances throughout Season 14, actress Kim Raver is returning to the ABC show full-time in Season 15. And she couldn't be happier about the news! Grey's fans likely predicted this turn of events if they watched the Season 14 finale, during which Teddy, Grey Sloan's former head of cardio, returned to Seattle and Bailey offered her the job of Interim Chief of Surgery. (Bailey is handing over the keys to the hospital to take a "sabbatical from stress.") Then, at the very end of the finale, Teddy revealed she's pregnant with a baby we have to assume is Dr. Owen Hunt's. "I am thrilled to reprise the role of Dr. Teddy Altman as a regular," Kim said a statement. "Returning to Shondaland with the incredibly talented [showrunner] Krista Vernoff, [actress and producer] Ellen Pompeo, and the amazing cast is heavenly. I have a special...

We've had a couple months to prepare for Arizona's exit on Grey's Anatomy, but that doesn't mean saying goodbye is easy. Finally, Arizona's story is tied up in the season 14 finale, and yes, we're all a mess. In the case of Grey Sloan's most sunshine-y doctor, we had a pretty good idea of how things would end up. After weeks hints, the show confirmed our deep suspicions that Arizona would move to New York for her daughter Sofia's sake. And though we knew the door she would take on her way out, there was still a big unresolved question: would Callie return for Arizona's send-off?
In the wake of the episode, we learn that no, Callie Torres does not reappear to whisk Arizona off into the sunset. There are a few cute mentions; Arizona admits that she's warming up to the idea of a reconciliation with Callie and that her...

That's a wrap for Jessica Capshaw! The blonde beauty is officially leaving Grey's Anatomy now that Season 14 is over (along with her co-star Sarah Drew) — and Shonda Rhimes said goodbye to the beloved character in the sweetest way. Arizona decided she will be leaving Grey Sloan Memorial Hosptial to move her rebellious daughter Sofia back to New York to be with her mom and Arizonas ex-wife Callie Torres (who used to be played by Sara Ramirez). During the Season 14 finale, Arizona even hinted to Richard Webber (played by James Pickens Jr.) that she smiles every time Callie texts her, leading many die-hard Grey's fans to think that the two end up together. In the second to last episode, we also learned that Arizona is going to be working with fetal surgeon Dr. Nicole Herman (played by Geena Davis) again. It's a beautiful day to... say goodbye to April and Arizona? Grey's Anatomy fans are in shock after the surprising announcement that Sarah Drew (April Kepner) and Jessica Capshaw (Arizona Robbins) are exiting the medical drama after Season 14. Deadline broke the news that Jessica, who has been on the show for 10 seasons, and Sarah, who has been on for nine seasons, will be written out of the show following the current season. The producers of the ABC drama made the decision in order to take the show in a new creative direction. "The characters of Arizona and April are permanently woven into the fabric of Grey's Anatomy thanks to the extraordinary work of Jessica Capshaw and Sarah Drew," executive producer Krista Vernoff said. "As writers, our job is to follow the stories where they want to go and sometimes that means saying goodbye to characters we love. It has been...
