The world is heating up out there, but the gusts and erratic temperature swings of early Spring can often be deceiving. One minute it looks sunny and warm, the next you’re stranded on a long walk in just basketball shorts when a sudden chill descends. Or it looks nasty, and all of a sudden you’re overdressed in 80-degree heat. It might be best to stay safely within the confines of your local art house or home theater with some Don’t-Miss Indies instead.

In order to understand the evolution of the San Francisco Film Festival on the eve of its 60th anniversary, it helps to look at its name, because it’s no longer called that.
Now, it’s the Sf International Film Festival, which is produced not by the San Francisco Film Society because the major nonprofit is now known simply as “Sffilm.” It’s an appropriately modern moniker for an institution nestled in the fast-paced technology circuit of the Bay Area, and chic enough to match the region’s progressive scene.
But that’s not the only way way in which Sffilm, which launches its 14-day festival this week, continues to stay relevant. “We’re sitting here in the Bay Area surrounded by an enormous amount of wealth that wants to be invested in media that matters,” said Sffilm executive director Noah Cowan. “We can really focus on who we are as a nonprofit,...

They say write…what you know, and perhaps in this case, writing what is unknown. It’s the sort of the artistic philosophy that filmmaker Sian Heder might have applied in developing a project that landed at the 2006 Cannes Film Festival (walked away with the 3rd Prize Cinéfondation Ex-aequo prize) with the first iteration of the eventual feature being a short film called Mother. Fast forward almost a decade later and production was lined up this June with Ellen Page and Allison Janney toplining a true exploration of what it might mean to be a mother figure. Coming off the heals of her writing and producer gig with television’s “Orange Is the New Black”, Tallulah has got a strong producer Sundance alumni team supporting the Heder’s directorial debut. With such a long gestation period, we’re thinking that this might illicit a strong emotional response from future auds.
