- Won Broadway's 1997 Tony Award for Best Orchestrations for "Titanic." He was nominated in the same category three other times: in 2000 for "Marie Christine," in 2001 for "Follies," and in 2003 for "Nine The Musical."
- The seventh person and fourth man to receive the status of EGOT. - Won a 1989 Grammy Award for his adaptations of Stephen Sondheim melodies in collaboration with Dame Cleo Laine for the album "Cleo Sings Sondheim".
