Command & Conquer Generals 2 was originally announced back at the VGAs as a standalone retail title coming from BioWare Victory, but EA has decided to change things up a bit. Generals 2 will now be released as the first “universe” of a new free-to-play “platform” simply titled Command & Conquer.
The new platform, set to deliver new games in the long-running Rts franchise, will kick things off with what was going to be Generals 2. EA says the decision gives “gamers complete access to the cutting-edge visuals, sound and destruction of a full, Aaa strategy game – for free.”
“We are thrilled about this opportunity to transform Command & Conquer into a premier online experience,” said Jon Van Caneghem, VP/Gm at EA. “For nearly two decades, this franchise has existed as something you buy; now we are creating a destination where our fans will be able to access the entire Command & Conquer universe, starting with...

"Our current focus is making a Aaa Command & Conquer game, which I am very excited to be working on."

So, if you’re a fan of the current Command and Conquer style of gameplay, brace yourself for further discontent.
In an interview with Gamasutra, EA’s Jon Van Caneghem announced he would like to take the series in a completely new, social-gaming, direction:
“Look what online has done for RPGs over the last 10 years. All the other categories are following suit… we’re looking forward to building something to be a leader in that space.
