She studied dramatic arts in Paris for three years.
She made her New York stage debut on 17 May, 1877 at Booth's Theater, playing one of the five Juliets in George Rignold's famous benefit.
The daughter of American Civil War hero, Commander Jonathan Mayhew Wainwright, USN.
She was survived by her daughter, stage director Gertrude Wainwright (1875-1932).
She was a member of the Catholic Actors Guild of America.
