- A 1923 graduate of the Howard University School of Dentistry, Dr. Mary Jane Watkins practiced dentistry in New York state, particularly in Harlem from 1924 until her retirement in 1972, save for two years in Nigeria. Earlier, during World War II, Dr. Watkins was the first African-American woman to be accepted for service in the WACs (Women's Army Corps).
