Herman is the older brother of Charlie Wedemeyer. Charlie, a former Michigan State football player, eventually (as head football coach at Los Gatos High School in California) gained fame when he continued to coach for many years, after being confined to a wheelchair from contracting Lou Gehrig's Disease.
