He served in the Royal Flying Corps, as a driver/mechanic, during World War I and in the Royal Air Force, as a warrant officer, in World War II. He died of a heart attack, while on active service in Italy.
As an 18-year-old, Whiteley worked as a steward on the RMS Titanic and survived the collision, suffering a broken leg.
