Newcastle United are all set to be involved in transfer deadline day for the first time in five years.
Not since the days of Andy Carroll’s shock £35 million move to Liverpool and the failed attempts to bring in Bryan Ruiz and Charles N’Zogbia as replacements have The Magpies threatened any sort of activity as the window begins to close.
With the threat of relegation looming large, and the money that will come with Premier League status next season severely at risk, Mike Ashley has sanctioned deals that have come close to the £30 million mark so far this window.
Some of the names that have been linked with a deadline day move to St James’ Park could see Newcastle’s spending rise past the £50 million they spent on the likes of Georginio Wijnaldum, Aleksandar Mitrovic and Chancel Mbemba in the summer.

Desperate times call for desperate measures…
After Newcastle lost yet another aerial battle in their own box yesterday which cost them defeat against Arsenal, The Telegraph link The Magpies with a move for 6 foot 2 inch Hull City defender Michael Dawson.
Initially the link seems strange given that Newcastle don’t sign players over 30 (Dawson is 32) and usually look abroad to sign their new recruits… but when you see how poor the club continually are with good-old fashioned defending of balls that come into the box, maybe going for a competent centre-half isn’t a bad call.
We should also take note that Newcastle are looking to offload Mike Williamson to Wolves in this January transfer window and Dawson could be seen as an easy upgrade for the slow centre-half they already have.

Newcastle United are not yet finished in the transfer window with five players set to leave on loan, according to the Northern Echo.
Steve McClaren has five players currently on the loan list including, Mike Williamson, Yoan Gouffran, Gael Bigirimana, Rob Elliot and Curtis Good who could all leave for Championship clubs.
The Football League loan window is due to open on September 9th and will shut on November 25th. This gives team in the lower leagues a chance to strengthen their sides if they have injury problems.
Williamson was rumoured to be on his way out of Tyneside on transfer deadline day but despite interest from Brighton a deal did not materialise. It’s likely that he will be offered to Chris Hughton’s side again as part of a loan deal.
Yoan Gouffran is wanted by Hull City and McClaren will also look to offload Elliot,...

Newcastle United new boy, Florian Thauvin stays behind after training to practise free kicks and doesn’t stop until he has taken the perfect delivery, according to the Daily Mirror.
The French midfielder grabbed three assists on his home debut for the Magpies and two came from beautifully taken set-piece deliveries which found the head of Siem de Jong and Mike Williamson.
Newcastle have lacked a free kick taker for a while now and his effective deliveries will be extremely beneficial to Steve McClaren who has already praised Thauvin’s ability, stating his crosses are “vital” to the team.
The 22-year-old told the Daily Mirror:
“I work very hard every single day to try and achieve the perfect free kick – and I don’t stop until I have got it right.

A glorious point at Old Trafford last weekend was magnified by Newcastle United’s competent 4-1 mauling of Northampton Town mid-week.
The Mags are flying again and despite being shot down away at Swansea in the second game of the season, they are beginning to flap their newly purchased Florian Thauvin-shaped wings as they look to land three points on Saturday (12.45pm Kick-off). Steve Mcclaren has been tactically savvy over the last two fixtures and tomorrow he has the daunting task of selecting a team capable of destroying Arsenal at home.
It’s not an easy task. The Newcastle boss will face a (previously unheard of) selection headache due to the number of players currently in-form. Does Daryl Janmaat return a right-back or does Chancel Mbemba deserve to stay there? Will Steven Taylor start alongside Fabricio Coloccini after his sublime showing against the Red Devils? Is...

Florian Thauvin scored a goal inside 180 seconds, provided three assists and then left the field after 65 minutes to a St James’ Park standing ovation as Newcastle beat Northampton 4-1 in the Capital One Cup second round.
The Frenchman announced his arrival within three minutes of his home debut when he acrobatically poked the ball home Massadio Haidara’s cross. Five minutes later the 22-year-old’s cross found Siem de Jong’s head who put the ball past Ryan Clarke.
In the second half, the former Marseille winger formed a telepathic read with Daryl Janmaat down the right hand channel and his perfectly weighted pass led to the Dutchman slotting the ball into the net. Less than ten-minutes later, Thauvin’s free-kick picked out Mike Williamson who headed in the forth.
Steve McClaren was impressed by his new signing’s contribution and spoke highly of the winger during his post-game press conference.

A floodlit drenched St James’ Park hosted Newcastle United versus Northampton Town in the Capital One Cup second round. A minute silence was perfectly respected prior to kick-off to pay tribute to the Worthing United footballers, Matthew Grimstone and Jacob Schilt who were killed in the Shoreham Airshow plane crash.
Both teams seemed galvanised by the tribute. Within eight minutes, the Magpies were two goals up with strikes from debutant Florian Thauvin and a fitter looking Siem de Jong. Two minutes later Marc Richards pulled one back from the penalty spot, it sprung the away end into life with a chorus of “Premier League, you’re having a laugh, Premier League you’re having a laugh.”
Newcastle responded to the criticism and proved their Premier League status with goals from Daryl Janmaat and Mike Williamson in the second half. More importantly both assists yet again came...

Score a goal inside 180 seconds, provide three assists and then leave the field after 65 minutes to a St James’ Park standing ovation – as introductions to the Newcastle United faithful go, Florian Thauvin’s home debut takes some beating.
The Frenchman was the star of the show as Steve McClaren’s side got their Capital One Cup campaign off to the perfect start by handing their head coach a first win of the season – and a comfortable 4-1 victory over Northampton Town at that to send Newcastle through to the next round of the League Cup.
Goals from Siem de Jong, Daryl Janmaat and Mike Williamson added to Thauvin’s opening strike, and ensured that Marc Richards’ penalty was not going to ruin this Capital One Cup second-round tie for McClaren. Ivan Toney also came on for a 12-minute cameo and his Newcastle debut, against the side he signed from this summer.

Steve McClaren has said that Florian Thauvin will start against Northampton Town tonight as Newcastle embark on their Capital One Cup campaign.
The Magpies’ boss also hinted that Siem de Jong could be named in the first team and said that he “should be chomping at the bit to play.”
Fringe players Mike Williamson and Cheick Tiote will also start the game with either Karl Darlow or Rob Elliot playing in goal.
McClaren is set to hand Thauvin his first start for Newcastle after the midfielder made his competitive debut against Manchester United at the weekend where he came on as a substitute.
The Magpies’ boss also mentioned that Paul Dummett could be on the bench for tonight’s game after making good progress on his hamstring injury.
The Toon boss said:
“It will be nice if Thauvin can come in and have a game, Cheicky hasn’t played this season.

Newcastle United completed the signing of Florian Thauvin on Wednesday evening, with the French winger signing a five-year contract for a reported fee of £12 million.
But despite the club taking their summer spending past the £50 million mark, fans’ attentions are still fixated with one problematic area of the pitch that they feel still needs sorting out. That position? Centre back.
United have bolstered their back line this window with the arrival of Chancel Mbemba, and even though the former Anderlecht man has impressed during The Toon’s opening two Barclays Premier League fixtures, the team has still shipped four goals.
From those four goals, Tim Krul has seen three headers fly past him which shows what type of centre back the black and whites desire. Ironically, they do have one in reserve but as any hardened Geordie will tell you, keeping Mike Williamson as far away...

If Steve McClaren and Lee Charnley’s presence at Newcastle United’s Benton training base for the Magpies’ Under-21 clash with Blackburn Rovers was a talking point, they were not the main attraction of the night.
Nor too were centre-back Mike Williamson, who watched on from the side of the pitch, Paul Dummett, or even first-team coach Paul Simpson.
In fact, although you would expect McClaren to attend as many Under-21 clashes as possible, there was the slight suspicion that the Magpies head coach made a point of arriving for this game in order to see one particular player in action – Newcastle’s fourth summer signing, Ivan Toney.
WhatCulture
The arrival of Toney from Northampton Town happened somewhat under the radar – perhaps unsurprisingly given that the Magpies have spent close to £35 million collectively on first-teamers Aleksandar Mitrovic, Georginio Wijnaldum and Chancel Mbemba – but his move to Tyneside is also intriguing.

John Carver still thinks Mike Williamson got himself deliberately sent off against Leicester City in May.
Newcastle crashed to an embarrassing 3-0 defeat at the King Power Stadium as their Barclays Premier League status became under an increasing amount of threat. Firstly, I owe you an apology. You put your trust in me last week to predict Steve McClaren’s first Newcastle United eleven and I failed. I claimed I was Mystic Meg and you guys came along for the ride. I don’t blame you, I’d spent the entire summer writing about the Magpies’ new boss and convinced myself that I was on the same wavelength as the Eredivisie Man of Courage.
I hold my hands up; Steve is a hard man to read and without criticising his selections (after all, he did get a 2-2 draw with Southampton) let’s take a peek at some of the more questionable decisions he made. Don’t worry, I’m not going to go all Mike Williamson again as I’ve been presented with incontrovertible video evidence from last September (where the Saints beat Newcastle 4-0) strongly suggesting that...

Newcastle United are finally looking to add goals to their defence – by targeting Brighton & Hove Albion’s top-scorer from the 2014-15 campaign Lewis Dunk, according to reports.
In fact, The Daily Mail claim that the Magpies are contemplating offering one centre-back in part-exchange for another – by trying to use Mike Williamson as a makeweight in a deal for the £5 million-rated defender.
Dunk might be a centre-back but he scored seven goals for the Seagulls last season, two better than former Magpies winger Kazenga LuaLua, meaning he was the club’s top scorer.
And, despite Brighton having rejected a £4 million offer from Fulham for the defender earlier in the summer, The Daily Mail suggest Chris Hughton could be willing to part with Dunk if he can be reunited with Williamson on the south coast.

Newcastle United are set to sell Mike Williamson this summer to Brighton and Hove Albion, according to the Shields Gazette.
Seagulls’ boss Chris Hughton, who signed the 31-year-old during his first season at St James’ Park, is looking to bring in some defensive reinforcements and has put the Newcastle centre back on his shortlist.
Hughton and Williamson enjoyed success together in 2010 as they both achieved promotion to the Premier League.
The English defender has been placed on the transfer list by the Magpies and is out of contract at the end of next season.

Georginio Wijnaldum was denied a dream debut as Southampton came from behind to break Newcastle United hearts and draw 2-2 at St James’ Park.
Steve McClaren’s first game in charge of the Magpies in the Barclays Premier League was a very-entertaining affair, but unfortunately his side could only deliver him a point.
All-too-familiar defensive deficiencies saw Newcastle concede from a Graziano Pelle header, before goals from Papiss Cisse and debutant Wijnaldum put the Magpies in front. However, 10 minutes from the end, Shane Long again exploited the Magpies’ poor defence to nod in a Saints equaliser and rob both Wijnaldum and McClaren of a victory on their respective Newcastle bows.

Panic stations should certainly not be taking hold, but Newcastle United have suffered yet another defeat in pre-season – this time a 1-0 loss to Borussia Mönchengladbach at St James’ Park – and they just do not look quite right yet under Steve McClaren.
Undoubtedly this was a step-up in opposition compared to what the Magpies have faced to date, but in all honesty Thorgan Hazard’s brilliant winner was a rare bit of quality in an otherwise turgid affair. It was obvious for all of the 21,088 present at St James’ that this was a pre-season match, because it’s pace was practically non-existent.
That’s all of the Magpies’ pre-season fixtures gone now and, with Southampton visiting the North East for the Premier League opener next weekend, McClaren is still searching for a defensive formula that works. Even the home debuts of Aleksandar Mitrovic, Chancel Mbemba and...

This summer, Newcastle United have experienced a refreshing transformation. A new head coach, a complete overhaul of the backroom staff, two very decent signings and the removal of “the best coach in the Premier League” has resuscitated a gasping Geordie fanbase who were minutes away from switching off their football life support machine.
Mike Ashley’s latest big-money purchases – Aleksandar Mitrovic and Georginio Wijnaldum – have hinted at much-craved ambition from the man upstairs and a warmth (that has nothing to do with the weather) has swept across Tyneside. But, just like leaving the house on a sun-drenched Friday afternoon for six pints of watered-down lager with your pals, only to find you have managed to lose your wallet somewhere along your commute, there is a slight hitch among the positives.
The club has forgotten about defenders. Remember them? They’re the ones that don’t tend...

On June 10th 2015 John Carver’s disastrous reign as Newcastle United interim coach finally came to an end.
For five-and-a-half months, Alan Pardew’s former assistant had tried to steer the good ship Newcastle – who were bobbing along calmly in mid-table mediocrity when he took over – to safety. Yet the smooth excursion turned into a treacherous voyage as the Magpies took on water at an alarming rate, and began sinking without a trace.
Delivering just two victories from his first 19 in charge – and overseeing eight straight losses, a Premier League record for Newcastle – Carver only managed to save the Magpies from relegation on the final day of the season with a 2-0 victory over West Ham United.
Between his first and last game in charge Carver – among many other things – accused Mike Williamson of getting himself deliberately sent off, led the Magpies to a fifth straight Tyne-Wear derby loss against Sunderland,...

Newcastle United centre-back Mike Williamson’s time on Tyneside could be finally coming to as end, with the defender attracting interest from a whole host of Premier League and Championship clubs, according to reports.
Hitc Sport claims that Crystal Palace, Aston Villa, Sheffield Wednesday, Leeds United and Hull City are among the suitors for the 31-year-old defender.
Chancel Mbemba has agreed to join the Magpies in an £8 million deal – subject to being granted a work permit – and Williamson has been told he can leave Tyneside this summer.

Palace boss Alan Pardew has already been heavily linked with a move for his former Magpies captain Fabricio Coloccini this summer, and now this report suggests he will look to be reunited with Williamson in south London as well.

Steve McClaren defended his decision to play a makeshift back four during Newcastle United’s loss to Portland Timbers 2 – insisting some of his senior defenders were not injured but could not be risked on the artificial pitch.
The Magpies succumbed to a 4-3 defeat at Providence Park – their second in three Us tour games – despite Georginio Wijnaldum’s goal just six minutes into his debut and a brilliant brace from Rolando Aarons.
In fact, Newcastle conceded three goals from long balls into the box, and two from set-pieces, as the makeshift back four of Gael Bigirimana, Shane Ferguson, Lubomir Satka and Aarons were pulverised in the air.

It seems that Mike Williamson’s days as a first team player at Newcastle United are numbered.
This joyous news comes around after it emerged on Sunday evening that Magpies target Chancel Mbemba asked not to play for Anderlecht in their friendly against Lazio.
There is no Chancel Mbemba in the Anderlecht starting line-up here in Brussels. Apparently he has asked not to play ahead of move to Nufc.

The centre back, who attracted interest from the likes of Atletico Madrid earlier in the summer, is expected to join his team mate Aleksandar Mitrović in swapping Belgium for Benton, as the striker was snapped arriving on Tyneside ahead of a £12.3 million move on Sunday.
The terms of 20-year-old Mbemba’s deal are up in the air. Prices ranging between £6 million-£10 million have been rumoured in the press, which would take United’s...

Newcastle United and Mike Williamson have locked in a stale and unloving relationship for far too long – and this summer should finally see their marriage of inconvenience end in separation.
The final reason for Nufc’s divorce with Williamson should be the centre-back’s dreadful display during the 2-1 pre-season friendly loss to Mexican side Club Atlas in Milwaukee.
From the very first minute, when he was almost caught in possession and ended up reverting to his normal hoofball, to the very last kick the 31-year-old was simply woeful.

Williamson was at fault for the second goal, along with Yoan Gouffran, as he was caught hopelessly out of position and then was brushed aside by Gonzalo Bergessio as if he wasn’t there – and every time Club Atlas ran towards the ex-Portsmouth centre-back they looked like scoring.

Newcastle United appear to hear returned to the market for Schalke 04 centre-back Joel Matip after accepting they will fail in their attempts to sign Monaco’s Aymen Abdennour – despite the Cameroon international having insisted he wants to stay in Germany.
Abdennour is being chased by some of Europe’s elite clubs and the Magpies are being realistic about their chances of signing him but they retain hope that they can still convince Matip to leave the Bundesliga for the Premier League, according to the Northern Echo.
Defensive reinforcements are a must following a woeful display at the back in the 2-1 pre-season friendly defeat to Club Atlas in Milwaukee, with both Mike Williamson and Jamaal Lascelles struggling.

The next phase of Newcastle United’s pre season took them to America, and the first of a three-game tour took place on Wednesday morning.
United took on Mexican side Club Atlas on a baseball field and went down by two goals to one.
A lacklustre start that saw Newcastle fall two goals behind inside 17 minutes cost them despite the Magpies being much improved after break.
It has taken McClaren just two pre-season matches in charge to experience an all-too-familiar feeling for Nufc bosses in recent years – defeat.
Moussa Sissoko’s finessed finish right on half-time gave Magpies the momentum heading into the second 45, but Newcastle’s inept first-half display ultimately proved to be their downfall – and this result will leave McClaren, Ian Cathro and the rest of the backroom staff in no doubt that serious groundwork is still needed to rid this Newcastle side of their rotten habits.

Newcastle United touched down in the USA on Sunday primed for their three-match tour with 23 of their 24-man squad in tow. New £14.5 million signing Georginio Wijnaldum will join up with the rest of the squad after flying out separately on Wednesday, completing the tour party.

Newcastle United remain keen to bring Joel Matip to St James’ Park this summer and are anxiously waiting to hear the outcome of discussions between the centre-back and his new Schalke 04 manager.

Newcastle United are scouting Ajax’s Joel Veltman as they continue their search for an international-class centre-back.
The 23-year-old Dutch international has been attracting interest from several Premier League clubs, including Tottenham Hotspur, and The Chronicle are reporting that the Magpies have been scouting him as well.
Spurs and Newcastle could both do battle for his signature this summer and, although Ajax hope to keep Veltman on their playing staff, a fee of between £8 million and £10 million could bring him to England.

Capped four times by Holland, Veltman was part of Louis van Gaal’s Dutch squad who finished in third place at the 2014 World Cup in Brazil.

Newcastle United defender Mike Williamson could be on his way out of St James’ Park this summer, with Leeds United reportedly considering making a move for the centre-back.
The Mirror claims that Leeds are aiming to recruit three defenders this summer and that Williamson is one of their key targets alongside Gareth McAuley.
While McAuley’s West Bromwich Albion contract is up next month and so he could move to Elland Road on a free transfer, Newcastle would demand a fee of around £1.5 million for Williamson.

Newcastle United have been linked with a whole host of incomings this summer but three of their French-speaking contingent appear to be on their way out of the club after reportedly being placed on the transfer list.

Newcastle United will be in the Premier League next season, but only just – and it took until the very final ball of the 2014-15 campaign had been kicked before that was confirmed.

Newcastle United are being heavily linked with moves for two players that were “suspended indefinitely”, or sacked in layman’s terms, by their club a couple of days ago.
The Magpies are rumoured to be keeping tabs on both Kevin-Prince Boateng and Sidney Sam after their respective careers at Schalke came to an abrupt end at the weekend.
The pair were told they could find new clubs following the 2-0 defeat to Koln after the club’s sporting director Horst Heidt threatened “consequences” should they fail to win the game.
Manager Roberto Di Matteo blamed a “lack of mutual trust” which suggests there more than initially meets the eye with this story.
And should Newcastle actually go through with their interest and sign the pair, they will need a real manager to keep everything in check.
John Carver just won’t do.

Newcastle United have conceded 61 goals in the Premier League already this season, the second most in the entire division. They may be struggling to put them in the back of the net at the other end, but allowing their defence to be breached with such regularity means that winning games consistently becomes extremely difficult.
Steven Taylor has spent a large portion of the season out injured, Fabricio Coloccini has looked a shadow of his former self and his leadership has been severely wanting, while the less that is said about Mike Williamson’s 2014-15 campaign the better.
What’s concerning is that, aside from Paul Dummett – who has also had fitness issues – Newcastle have the same three centre-backs in their squad that they did during the 2009-10 Championship-winning season. Five years on and the Magpies have made precisely zero progression in this department.

John Carver has been decimated this week in the press, on social media, and in the pubs across Tyneside after steering Newcastle United to their eighth-successive defeat and then declaring he believed he was still the “best coach in the Premier League”.
But none of that compares to the latest low blow the Newcastle interim head coach has recived. He has had the ultimate insult added to his injury – with Sam Allardyce trying to provide advice on how to mange Nufc.
West Ham United boss Allardyce’s tenure at St James’ Park ended in January 2008 after just nine months in charge and his playing style was widely disliked in the North East. When Mike Ashley took the decision to sack a manager he had not appointed in the first place, there was widespread approval across the Toon faithful.

It’s not all doom and gloom at Newcastle United right now. They may be stuck down in 15th in the Premier League and fighting for their top-flight future, but they are at the very summit of another table – unfortunately it just so happens to be the injury table.
This is a sight that Newcastle fans have seen all too often in recent years, and their injury room currently contains 10 players – two more than second-placed Queens Park Rangers.
Papiss Cisse (knee), Adam Armstrong (thigh), Siem de Jong (thigh) and Paul Dummett (hamstring) have all joined the list this week, rocketing the Magpies right to the top.
Richard Sellers/Empics Sport
Rob Elliot (thigh), Rolando Aarons (hamstring), Jak Alnwick (wrist), Massadio Haidara (knee), Cheick Tiote (knee) and Steven Taylor (calf) were already receiving treatment before the beginning of this week, while four more of their teammates have now joined them.

Arguably two of Newcastle’s greatest performers of the last Premier League era.
Arguably two of Newcastle’s perennial under performers of the last two Premier League seasons.
How do you solve a couple of problems like Fabricio Coloccini and Tim Krul?
Well, one way to do it, and the way that every other professional club in the world chooses to do it, is to have a squad brimming with players that are competing for places in the starting XI.
This is something that has gone out of the window since The Magpies returned to the Premier League in 2010.
Tim Krul has an able deputy in Rob Elliot, but the gulf in class between the pair is always evident.
Even though Rob has proved himself to be a good ‘keeper when called upon in the last two seasons, often producing Man of the Match performances along the way,...

Newcastle United’s woes continue to mount after interim head coach John Carver revealed that Siem de Jong has had a thigh scan ahead of the West Bromwich Albion clash.
Carver’s beleaguered side have lost eight consecutive Premier League matches for the first time in the club’s history and they sit just two points and three places above the relegation zone heading into the crunch game with the Baggies.
De Jong was expected to be elevated into the starting line-up for the visit of Tony Pulis’ men after the 26-year-old came on for the final 33 minutes of the 3-0 defeat at Leicester City, but Carver has revealed that the attacking-midfielder is a doubt.

Newcastle United’s Under-21 side put in an impressive display at St James’ Park as they dispatched Blackburn Rovers 4-2 – with striker Adam Armstrong grabbing two of the home side’s goals.
The victory on Tuesday night, supplemented by strikes from Callum Roberts and Olivier Kemen, gave Peter Beardsley’s youth side their second victory in three matches – a record the Newcastle first team could only dream of right now. John Carver’s men have lost eight Premier League matches in succession, conceding 18 goals in the process, and sit just two points and three places above the relegation zone with three games remaining.
With Newcastle suffering a defensive crisis – with both Mike Williamson and Daryl Janmaat’s red cards resulting in suspensions, and Paul Dummett a doubt for this weekend through injury – did any of the four defenders on display look ready for a first-team call-up?...

Newcastle United seem to be Gary Neville and Jamie Carragher’s favourite weekly punching bag – but every single bit of criticism directed at the Magpies by the duo on Monday Night Football this week was thoroughly merited.
Neville described Newcastle as a club in “free-fall” right now following their club-record eighth-straight Premier League, while his fellow Sky Sports pundit Carragher blasted the Magpies as “shambles”.
John Carver’s side meekly surrendered 3-0 to Leicester City at the King Power Stadium – having two players dismissed for two bookings in the process – and the club then descended into a mini civil war as the interim head coach accused Mike Williamson of “deliberately” getting sent off, before club-captain Fabricio Coloccini and goalkeeper Tim Krul allegedly exchanged words on the coach after the game.

Fabricio Coloccini is captain of a side who have lost eight-straight Premier League matches and who are imploding as they speed towards the drop – yet the Magpies skipper believes he is suited to handle the “pressure” of management.
The 33-year-old Argentine’s leadership skills have been found wanting in recent months, but he still maintains that coaching is a career he is likely to pursue once he hangs up his boots – however he accepts needs to focus on the here and now, which is guiding Newcastle to Premier League survival.
Since the 39-cap Argentine international got himself needlessly dismissed for a reckless challenge on Everton’s Aaron Lennon in March, Coloccini has missed three matches through suspension and then returned to a Newcastle side who have conceded 11 goals in their last four games.

John Carver remains Newcastle United interim head coach – which means he also remains in control of a dressing room that he referred to as a “soft touch”.
Not only did Alan Pardew’s former assistant lambast Mike Williamson, accusing the centre-back of “deliberately” getting a second yellow card, he also tore into the majority of the Magpies squad – sparing only midfielder Jack Colback and goalkeeper Tim Krul from his scathing criticism of the 3-0 capitulation against Leicester City.
Carver looked dumbfounded as he was interviewed by the television media – explaining that he and his backroom staff can spend the entire week coaching the players to defend set pieces and get stuck in, but if they “aren’t willing to head the ball” or if they “aren’t prepared to break their nose” for the cause, then the Magpies head coach cannot take to the field and do it for them.

With just three weeks of the 2014-15 Premier League season remaining it’s a case of take your pick of the North East clubs for the final relegation spot: will it be Sunderland or Newcastle United who plummet down the abyss and into the Championship?
Both Queens Park Rangers and Burnley are 100-1 on to occupy two of the bottom-three positions – and then there is barely a matchpaper between the North East’s two Premier League sides. Sunderland are 8-13, while Newcastle are 9-2, to be relegated.
Yes these odds may still suggest that Sunderland are more likely to plummet through the Premier League trapdoor than their near-neighbours on Tyneside, but Dick Advocaat’s men have at least a smidgen of upward momentum – while John Carver’s side only have bucketloads of downwards momentum.

“I thought he’d done that on purpose – it looks like he did. The ball was off the pitch – he had no need to make the challenge. He will miss two games. Is it an easy way out?
“I thought he meant it. When the ball went on to that left-hand side my first reaction was don’t do it. He did it. Vardy was off the pitch, Willo was off the pitch, the ball was off the pitch. There was no need to do it and I’m not accepting that.
“I told him that to his face. I don’t want to go into his reaction.”
These are the words of the biggest coward in the Newcastle United dressing room.
For all the failures on the pitch yesterday at the King Power Stadium, and those can’t be forgotten, singling out someone of Mike Williamson...

Newcastle United coaching target Steve McClaren has distanced himself from the Magpies job by insisting he wants to remain at Derby County – despite speculation that he will take over imminently at the St James’ Park helm.
John Carver’s Magpies were hammered 3-0 by Leicester City at the King Power Stadium on Saturday, leaving them just two points above the Premier League relegation zone after an eighth consecutive defeat.
Following the manner of the defeat – in which Newcastle went behind inside 40 seconds and then had both Mike Williamson and Daryl Janmaat dismissed in pathetic fashion – Carver’s position has become close to untenable. The interim head coach lambasted his players and accused Williamson of “deliberately” getting himself sent off, proving the dressing room is simply not behind him.
