Clive Barker's 1987 film "Hellraiser" has always existed a little off to the side of the usual rogue's gallery of 1980s horror slashers. Its central demon, originally credited as Lead Cenobite (Doug Bradley), is usually mentioned alongside other notorious cinematic serial killers like Michael Myers from the "Halloween" movies, Jason Voorhees from the "Friday the 13th" movies, and Freddy Krueger from the "Nightmare on Elm Street" movies ... but he is not quite the same. The Lead Cenobite, better known as Pinhead, isn't a vicious killer who murders teenagers, but a sex deity, culled from a parallel dimension where physical pain has become indivisible with sexual pleasure. Pinhead will definitely kill you, but he will do so with extreme kink. The nails in his face were placed there as part of an extreme S&m game.
"Hellraiser" began its life as "The Hellbound Heart," Barker's 1986 novella. His film adaptation isn't quite as sexed-up,...

Back in the days of Blockbuster and local video rental stores, there was always that one rack — the one packed with horror flicks with gory-looking covers that scared Eighties and Nineties kids witless. Now, that same vibe has come to Shudder in the form of Josh Forbes’ Destroy All Neighbors, starring none other than Eighties hero Alex Winter.
Winter, star of 1989’s Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure and 1987’s The Lost Boys, has mostly been in his writer-director era for the past few decades — save for a recent appearance as Bill S.

Unleashed on theaters in 1988, director Tom Holland's "Child's Play" introduced America to Chucky, a My Buddy-like doll inhabited by the soul of a foul-mouthed serial killer. Equal parts absurd and frightening, that first movie spawned six sequels, a remake, and a TV series. Of all the iconic '80s horror villains, he's the only one still written by his original creator, Don Mancini. As such, the TV series has brought back many actors and characters from throughout the franchise's history, in an increasingly complicated -- and refreshingly LGBTQ-positive -- narrative of epic proportions. A narrative that involves Devon Sawa playing multiple roles, for some reason.
Fans of the show know where some of the original film's cast members ended up, but what about the rest? Shot in Chicago, "Child's Play" made use of several local stage talents, as well as a few veteran actors and familiar faces. Can you...

Earlier this year, we caught word that Arrow Video’s 4K box set release of the first four Hellraiser movies (get it Here) would include a workprint cut of the 1996 installment, Hellraiser: Bloodline (watch that one Here), allowing fans the chance to see what the movie was going to be like before Dimension Films started tinkering with it. Now that the Arrow Video box set is available, JoBlo’s own Lance Vlcek has a copy of the Hellraiser: Bloodline workprint – and in the video embedded above, he offers his review of this cut of the film, comparing it to the theatrical version we’ve been watching for over twenty-five years. To hear all about this Hellraiser: Bloodline workprint vs. theatrical cut match-up, hit play on the video!

The fourth installment of the Hellraiser franchise, Hellraiser: Bloodline, was the last film of the series to be released theatrically. It was also notorious for its troubled production, eventually leading director Kevin Yagher to walk away when Miramax demanded reshoots. Miramax then brought in Joe Chappelle to complete the film.
When Yagher saw the finished cut of Hellraiser: Bloodline, post reshoots, it’d become so removed from his vision that he had his name removed from the credits using the Alan Smithee pseudonym, as did Chappelle. While Yagher’s version of the prequel/sequel is lost to time, Arrow’s Hellraiser: Bloodline Workprint assembles the footage Yagher shot, offering fans the closest we’ll ever get to a Director’s Cut. Arrow’s workprint makes for a more coherent and fascinating version of the troubled franchise installment.

Imagine if you will a line of dominoes that increase in size as they move left to right. A man stands behind the smallest domino, poised to knock it forward, which will instigate a chain reaction leading to the largest domino toppling over. This "domino theory" illustration helps to visualize the causal interconnection between a seemingly innocuous event in the past and a monumental event in the present or near future. It's especially handy when attempting to understand how 20th Century Fox studio head Darryl F. Zanuck's mother getting a cold in 1908 led indirectly to the creation and broad success of the comedy procedural series "Bones" in 2005. And not because "Bones" was a Fox show. The connection is much more serpentine and intriguing.
You see, when the Wahoo, Wisconsin-born Sarah Louise Zanuck caught a hard-to-shake chill in the latter years of the 20th century's first decade, she thought it'd...

The beginning of "A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors" is arguably one of the most relatable opening horror sequences for any disenfranchised youth filled with teenage angst. Introducing our traumatized hero, Kristen (Patricia Arquette), the credits play as Angelo Badalamenti's score transitions into Dokken's "Into the Fire" as Kristen mainlines coffee grinds to stay awake. She's building a papier-maché house of the boarded up structure she sees in her nightmares. Immediately, you empathize with her. She looks like a friend in need (who could also use another pack of cigarettes).
Arquette was the perfect casting choice to be a Nancy for a different generation. As a result, "Dream Warriors" director Chuck Russell had to make an "Elm Street" movie for a different set of teens who would respond to something bigger, badder, and more ambitious than Wes Craven's original and "Freddy's Revenge." The Sleepy Hollow episode of Wtf Happened to This Horror Movie? was Written by Ric Solomon, Narrated by Travis Hopson, Edited by Victoria Verduzco, Produced by Andrew Hatfield and John Fallon, and Executive Produced by Berge Garabedian.
Back in 1820, author Washington Irving created a short story entitled The Legend of Sleepy Hollow. It brought to life the haunting character of The Headless Horseman. This legendary tale would become the stuff of nightmares and scare people of all ages. So what was the next best thing to do? That’s right…adapt it into a movie! And not just any movie… we’re talking about Disney’s The Adventures of Ichabod and Mr. Toad (Record Scratch)…Sorry I meant Tim Burton’s 1999 Horror film Sleepy Hollow (watch it Here). On March 8, 1996, the fourth film in the "Hellraiser" film series, "Hellraiser: Bloodline," was released in theaters. It purported to be the final film in the series, as it would feature the death of Pinhead (Doug Bradley), the demonic sadomasochist summoned from the rough sex dimension via an elaborate magical puzzle box.
"Bloodline" took an impressively ambitious narrative tack, taking place over three time periods, several centuries removed from one another. It began in 1796 with the original maker of the puzzle box, then fast-forwarded to the present and caught up with Pinhead and a descendent of the puzzle-maker. Its third act took place in 2127 on board a space station where Pinhead would be summoned to torture astronauts.
At the time, "Hellraiser: Bloodline" was largely dismissed by audiences. It didn't get good reviews, and many looked askance at the idea of Pinhead in space. It came at a time when several horror...

Released in 1996, and co-directed by makeup effects artist Kevin Yagher and Joe Chappelle, fourth franchise installment Hellraiser: Bloodline served the dual role of being a prequel and a sequel, telling a centuries-spanning story that documents the puzzle box’s beginning and end. While horror fans have come to appreciate the ambitious “Pinhead in Space” movie in recent years, it’s the behind the scenes drama of the production that often takes center stage.
For starters, Kevin Yagher was replaced by Joe Chappelle before production was completed, and both filmmakers ultimately declined to have their names attached to the finished product.
That’s why Hellraiser: Bloodline is credited to the fake director “Alan Smithee.”
As Meagan Navarro explained here on Bd back in 2020, “Writer Peter Atkins and director Kevin Yagher originally envisioned a sprawling story that took place in three separate timelines, with the past, present, and future tied to a single man.

Freshly announced this morning, Arrow Video is bringing the Hellraiser franchise to 4K Ultra HD with a brand new Hellraiser: Quartet of Torment Limited Edition 4K Uhd set.
The upcoming set features the following Hellraiser movies:
Hellraiser (1987) Hellbound: Hellraiser II (1988) Hellraiser III: Hell on Earth (1992) Hellraiser: Bloodline (1996)
The most exciting aspect of this release? Arrow’s Hellraiser: Quartet of Torment set features the newly uncovered Workprint Version of fourth installment Hellraiser: Bloodline!
This never-before-seen version of the 1996 sequel, directed by Kevin Yagher, “provides a fascinating insight into how it changed during post production.” The initial cut of the movie ran 110 minutes long, but the studio executives at Miramax demanded major changes that resulted in Yagher departing the project. The final cut ultimately ended up running 85 minutes long, and Yagher was so unhappy with the finished product that he took his name off the movie. That’s why Hellraiser: Bloodline is...

As the daughter of Chucky franchise special effects artist Tony Gardner, director Kyra Elise Gardner offers a unique perspective on the killer doll’s lasting impact in the Screambox Original documentary Living with Chucky.
Child’s Play creator Don Mancini and franchise alumni Brad Dourif, Jennifer Tilly, Fiona Dourif, Alex Vincent, Christine Elise, Billy Boyd, John Waters, Tony Gardner, David Kirschner, and more spill their guts along with such notable fans as Marlon Wayans, Abigail Breslin, Lin Shaye, and Dan Povenmire, among others.

But a lot of the big horror franchises are still waiting to receive their definitive documentaries. Last year, I read the book Reign of Chucky, a film-by-film examination of the Child’s Play / Chucky franchise that was packed with interesting information about the making of the movies. In what is the second killer bear movie in as many weeks -- "Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey" was the other -- Elizabeth Banks' "Cocaine Bear" is a wonderfully blunt, refreshingly straightforward grindhouse horror/comedy about, well, a bear on cocaine. Based on a real-life 1985 incident of a black bear eating a $15 million stash of abandoned cocaine, Banks' film extrapolates that the bear in question went on a crazed murder spree after consuming the drugs. Not only did the bear get high, but it immediately got addicted, fiendishly tearing through the Kentucky woods looking for more bricks of cocaine that had been thrown out of a drug dealer's plane. It even thought to give some cocaine to its cubs. In real life, the bear merely died.
Perhaps a mild spoiler, but at the end of the film, the bear survives. The drug dealers who went looking for their missing cocaine were either viciously mauled,...

Ozzy Osbourne, the Godfather of Metal, may be most famous for his legendary contributions to the music genre, but the Prince of Darkness has also acted in a handful of movies. He's far from the first rock star to do so, but his choice of roles prove his sense of humor and knack for camp. Folks may recognize him from his cameos in comedies like "Austin Powers in Goldmember" and "Little Nicky," or voice cameos in "Gnomeo & Juliet" and "Trolls 2: World Tour," but earlier on he appeared in the lesser-known 1986 heavy metal horror film "Trick or Treat."
Not to be confused with the 2007 Halloween-themed anthology "Trick 'r Treat," "Trick or Treat" is a tongue-in-cheek relic of a time when conservative commentators were denouncing metal music as a serious threat to the public order. The story follows high school metalhead Eddie Weinbauer, played by Marc Price, and his quest...

Of all the killer dolls committed to celluloid, Chucky is one of the most recognizable. Since 1988, the ginger-haired Good Guy toy has been host to the soul of serial killer Charles Lee Ray (Brad Dourif) and has since spread his mayhem across six sequels, a remake, and a successful television series about to go into its third season.
It all began with "Child's Play," first conceived by Don Mancini. The son of an ad industry veteran, Mancini aimed to satirize the stranglehold marketing had on kids. Before co-writer John Lafia and director Tom Holland touched the story, it originally lacked the serial killer or occult rituals seen in the final product. But the Chucky we know and recoil from would not only be possessed by Lee Ray and kill a man via a voodoo doll, but he would dispatch a babysitter, blow up an old acquaintance, attempt to kill a mother and two cops,...

There’s something inherently unsettling about teeth, and the addition of someone prodding at them with sharp instruments is especially invasive. On the other side of that coin, the negative association with dentistry can impact the professionals. Cult filmmaker Brian Yuzna tapped into these fundamental fears with his 1996 direct-to-video film, The Dentist, and its 1998 sequel, The Dentist 2.
In fact, Yuzna knew he could sell the movie based on the title alone, so he solicited writers to pitch him on the concept. It was his old pals Stuart Gordon and Dennis Paoli — for whom Yuzna had produced Re-Animator and From Beyond — that cracked the script. As the daughter of special effects legend Tony Gardner – who helped bring Chucky to life countless times – she experienced Chucky’s evolution at home. Playing canonically fair with the "Hellraiser" film series is a tricky proposition. Although the first eight "Hellraiser" movies feature Doug Bradley as Pinhead, the franchise's central monster, few of them seem to interconnect in any kind of meaningful way. Clive Barker's original "Hellraiser" (1987) and Tony Randel's "Hellbound: Hellraiser II" (1988) feature many members of the same cast and follow the same continuity, but after that, the series becomes a little hazy. Anthony Hickox's "Hellraiser III: Hell On Earth" (1992) takes place in America and features a new protagonist and an altered version of Pinhead who now wants to cause mayhem on Earth.
Kevin Yagher's "Hellraiser: Bloodline" (1996) was the series' last attempt to keep continuity clear, working the events of "Hellraiser III" into a broader "Hellraiser" myth. "Bloodline" covers both the invention of the Lemarchant Configuration and the death of Pinhead in the distant future.

In just a few weeks, we’ll be getting a new entry in the Hellraiser franchise. A reboot directed by David Bruckner, starring Jamie Clayton as Pinhead, that’s set to be released through the Hulu streaming service on October 7th. In anticipation of the new film, we’re looking back at one of the previous Hellraiser movies. One that could be considered The Black Sheep – or one of the black sheep in a franchise that has several of them. The one we’re looking at today is Hellraiser: Bloodine (watch it Here). To find out what we had to say about it, check out the video embedded above.
Hellraiser: Bloodline was initially directed by Kevin Yagher, then Joe Chappelle came in to handle the reshoots. The film is credited to the non-existent Alan Smithee. Scripted by Peter Atkins, it has the following synopsis:

“Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom” got a big boost in the Oscar race for Best Makeup and Hairstyling by winning both of its bids at the guild honors on April 3. The Netflix film was honored for its period makeup and period hairstyling at the 8th annual Makeup Artists & Hair Stylists Guild Awards on Saturday.
One of its Oscar rivals – “Pinocchio” — claimed the special effects prize. Two of the other Oscar nominees were shut out as “Hillbilly Elegy” lost all three of its races here and “Mank” was blanked twice over. The fifth contender at the Academy Awards, “Emma,” was overlooked by the guild.
Conversely the other big winner at the Muahs Awards, “Bird of Prey,” was snubbed by the makeup and hairstyling branch of the academy. It won both contemporary categories here.

The Makeup Artists & Hair Stylists Guild got a jump on the Oscars by announcing nominations on February 18. But don’t look for four-time contender “Bill & Ted Face the Music” or three-timer “Mulan” on the list of Oscar nominees for Best Makeup and Hairstyling when that roster is revealed on March 15. They didn’t make the cut with the academy in phase 1 of voting.
Of the 10 films that remain in the running at the Oscars, “Hillbilly Elegy” reaped three bids with the guild; “Birds of Prey (and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn),” “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom” and “Mank” earned two apiece; and “Jingle Jangle: A Christmas Journey” and “Pinocchio” have one each.
The other four films shortlisted by the makeup artists and hair stylists branch of the academy — “Emma,” “The Glorias,”
“The Little Things” and “One Night in Miami” — were snubbed by the guild.

Awards season has begun in earnest now that it’s January and several critics groups have weighed in, giving love to contenders such as “Nomadland,” “Mank” and “The Trial of the Chicago 7.”
But work in other films is also deserving, and some of the most striking aspects of the contenders are in cinematography, production design, costume design and editing, all contributing powerfully to the mise-en-scène. To kick off the year, Variety’s awards team of Jazz Tangcay, Clayton Davis, Tim Gray and Jenelle Riley highlight artisans flying below the radar.
Greyhound, Production design, David Crank
Crank re-created a World War II battleship for the Tom Hanks-starring film. He captures the claustrophobia of life aboard the vessel in the living quarters of Hanks’ Capt. Krause and in the sonic room, in which the crew tracks the formation of U-boats trying to destroy the USS Keeling, code-named Greyhound, in a battle on the Atlantic.

Keanu Reeves and Alex Winter are back for another excellent adventure in “Bill & Ted Face the Music,” hitting theaters and digital platforms on Aug. 28. This time, the time-traveling, middle-aged best friends journey out in search of one song that will unite the world.
Whether creating present day or futuristic looks for Reeves and Winter, costume designer Jennifer Starzyk, who recently worked on David Fincher’s “Mindhunter,” knew no one would understand the character looks better than the film’s stars. After all, they had been with these characters for decades, since 1989’s “Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure.”
Starzyk spoke with Variety to break down some key looks from the film:
Bill and Ted’s return
“Director Dean Parisot first said, ‘No one is going to know these characters better than Keanu and Alex,’ so I deferred to them. Everyone has an emotional attachment to these characters, and I had mine.

This weekend, Orion Pictures unleashed a new Child’s Play into theaters everywhere, along with a brand new version of the Buddy doll (now known as Buddi) to terrorize a new batch of victims (and a few other surprises to boot). Behind the more AI-centric redesign of Chucky and all the glorious kills in Child’s Play (2019) are legendary effects artist Todd Masters and his brilliant team at MastersFX, who worked endlessly to give fans a super fun slasher but also a bold new version of a horror icon as well.
[Spoiler Warning: The following contains some spoilers about specific plot points in Child’s Play (2019), so if you haven’t seen the film yet, and don’t want to have the experience spoiled, be sure to come back to this interview once you’ve seen the remake.]
While there is always that innate pressure that comes with taking on an established and iconic horror character, Masters instead saw the new design of the Buddi doll in the remake as his way of paying tribute to one of his compatriots as well as taking the character in a new direction that was more befitting of this new Child’s Play story.

Have you ever watched a movie about a psychotic, genetically modified dog and found yourself wondering if it was in fact made by a psychotic, genetically modified dog? Such was the case for me while watching the new Scream Factory release of John Lafia’s 1993 killer canine flick Man’s Best Friend. Now, recently I’ve developed an affinity for the bonkers horror that came out of the early to mid ’90s. I can appreciate a movie that takes a crazy premise and commits to it. The problem with Man’s Best Friend is that it doesn’t quite know what it’s committing to.

Say what you want about A Nightmare on Elm Street 2: Freddy’s Revenge, but I personally believe it to be an underrated entry in the franchise. It may have brought the Springwood Slasher into the waking world for the wealth of the film, sure, but I found it to be quite enjoyable nonetheless. The burgeoning horror icon had some defining moments in that installment, not to mention the overall product being so quintessentially ’80s.
If you agree with me – or if you just happen to be a premium collector with a general love for the series – you should start paying attention. I say that because Kevin Yagher has pulled back the curtain on one kick-ass Freddy Krueger maquette that’s inspired by the pre-production sculpt that yielded the larger makeup sculpture to be used for the second Nightmare movie.

If one hundred people put together a list of the worst ways that horror franchises have jumped the shark, I’m pretty sure “sent the villain into space” would be near the top of ninety-nine of them. Sending a franchise villain to space is essentially saying, “Screw it, I’m all out of ideas for this character.” This would seem particularly true of a character like Pinhead, as the Hellraiser series has always been about grue-filled erotic fantasy and never even played in the same ballpark as science fiction. Given that the original Hellraiser is my all-time favorite movie, one might think that I’d see it as sacrilege to launch one of the great villains into the stars. Well, you’d be wrong, because against all logic, I firmly believe that Hellraiser: Bloodline manages to make it work.
