In case you’re not fully familiar with it, Oblivion Battery is a baseball sports manga by Eko Mikawa, which has been published since 2018 and currently consists of 17 collected volumes as of the time of writing. On October 11, 2020, a 20-minute Ona episode was released before the manga was properly adapted into an anime series which premiered on April 10, 2024. The anime is produced by Mappa and the third episode, which aired recently, provided us with a very special Easter Egg that many fans will love, but which is also a heartbreaking tribute to a manga and anime legend.
The third episode of the series, “So What?”, premiered on April 24, 2024, and fans have noticed a very interesting Easter Egg dedicated to the late Akira Toriyama, as one of the characters undergoes a Goku-style transformation, which is Mappa’s wonderful tribute to the Dragon Ball franchise.

One hopes that any other studio on Earth might have come to the self-evident conclusion that “what if the Rampart scandal, but magic?” wasn’t a premise capable of supporting the next “Star Wars” (despite screenwriter Max Landis’ outspoken faith in the franchise potential of his “Bright”). And yet 11 million subscribers who clicked on something they managed to tolerate for at least the length of a movie trailer can’t be wrong, thus inspiring Netflix to leverage its multi-tentacled worldwide content machine in a way that allows the streamer to squeeze water from a stone without further tarnishing its brand or embarrassing Will Smith.
At the risk of evoking a certain Dril tweet, you almost gotta hand it to them for trying; “Bright: Samurai Soul” may be a deeply mediocre riff on a modern fantasy so bad it made “movie magic” feel like a contradiction in terms, but that still...

Netflix is going all in on anime as they add the eagerly anticipated Godzilla movie and 12 other projects to their slate of upcoming programming. Deadline says in addition to the series the network is also overseeing the development of Cannon Busters, Devilman Crybaby, B: The Beginning, and Knights Of The Zodiac: Saint Seiya just to name a few.
The Godzilla and Saint Seiya grabs really show that Netflix is working to grab their Western audience who loves anime, but with competitors like Crunchyroll and Funimation (who was recently bought by Sony) in the mix, who knows if they'll be able to compete on that front. Time will tell, but the addition of so many projects seems promising for the future of anime on the platform.
