- Was selected from over 11,000 other teacher applicants to be the first civilian in space as part of the Teacher in Space Program. She was to teach two 15-minute class sessions from the Challenger space shuttle via satellite.
- Her ashes are interred in Arlington National Cemetary along with the rest of the Challenger crew. There is also a memorial for her and her crew in Atchinson, Kansas.
- Was a history teacher in Concord, New Hampshire.
- Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home (1986) is dedicated to her memory (the movie was filmed between February-May, 1986) as well the rest of Challenger crew died in the disaster (Gregory Jarvis, Ron McNair, Ellison Onizuka, Judith A. Resnik, Francis 'Dick' Scobee and Michael J. Smith).
