- Greg Poppleton worked in heavy industry before beginning his acting career on radio, stage and ultimately, film.
He grew up in Sydney, Australia, the fourth of five children to Bert, a bus driver, and Aileen (Stapleton), a shop worker. He is of English and Irish ancestry.
After being top of his school, Christian Brothers Burwood, he won a scholarship to attend his final two years of high school at the selective Fort Street High School in Sydney.
Poppleton has an honors degree in Chemical Engineering from the University of New South Wales, Sydney, and a Graduate Diploma in Communications, with a writing and textual theory major, from the University of Technology, Sydney.
He was discovered in a cattle call for a kids program and made his movie debut in a scene with Nicole Kidman in Moulin Rouge! (2001). He has since been in one-on-one movie scenes with Adrien Brody and John Goodman.
On TV he has appeared in the series Barons (ABC), The Last Days of the Space Age (Disney +), Year Of (Stan) and many more.
Greg Poppleton is Australia's only authentic 1920s-30s singer with over 1.3 million YouTube hits. He has released eight albums. He also produces and hosts the networked jazz show, The Phantom Dancer, on Australian radio.

- His scene with Emma Booth in the TV show, Underbelly (2008), spawned its own Facebook fan page.
- As well as acting in the film, Greg was used as the prosthetic design and costuming model for the Dufflepuds in The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader (2010).
- In Hunt Angels (2006) he became one of the many actors who have portrayed Ned Kelly in movies.
