BioWare and Obsidian both cooked up Knights of the Old Republic sequel ideas, but the Force sadly wasn't with them....
Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, which was developed by BioWare and published by LucasArts in 2003, is fondly remembered as one of the greatest Star Wars games ever produced. KotOR (as fans took to calling it) was epic an RPG with a killer story, heaps of planets to explore, loads of loveable characters, and a real sense that your actions had consequences.
Obsidian Entertainment took over from BioWare to make a sequel, Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic II - The Sith Lords, which arrived at the tail-end of 2004. KotOR 2 felt a little rushed in comparison to the original, but it still stood up on its own as an impressively detailed game with a stack of excellent features. Its villains were particularly memorable.

A new book reveals some of the secrets of the making of Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic!
Of all of the video games in Star Wars history, Knights of the Old Republic and its sequel may be the most memorable. In the rarified air of Star Wars storytelling, where generations of writers and artists raised on the movies vie for the chance to put their own artistic spin on George Lucas’s universe, the ultimate goal is to create work that fans will remember and love for a long time. And few games have reached the storytelling heights of this BioWare RPG, which captures both the feeling of sitting down and watching a Star Wars movie for the first time while also giving fans a completely different and unexpected take on the galaxy.

Sam looks at the history of the studio behind Mass Effect, Baldur's Gate, and Dragon Age: Inquisition
A chance meeting of three trainee doctors in medical school has led to a generation of players being treated to some of the most memorable gaming storylines of all. Ray Muzyka, Greg Zeschuk and Augustine Yip were committed gamers, with the small matter of training for a career in medicine to attend to first. On graduating, the three came together to use their programming experience (medical software is owed a debt of gratitude by many RPG fans) to begin to create their own games. Thus, from a lecture hall in Canada, Bioware was born.
With the release of their first game, the mech shooter Shattered Steel in 1996, the company came into the public eye. Introducing revolutionary concepts like destructible terrain and context-dependant damage (layman’s terms; headshots hurt more), the team met with some success.

Precursor Games' Denis Dyack (formerly of Silicon Knights) recently met up with us to reintroduce his studio's spiritual successor to their Gamecube cult hit, 'Eternal Darkness'. Titled 'Shadow of the Eternals', Precursor's Kickstarter for the game has 14 days left to reach its goal of $750,000. Looking at the higher pledge rewards, the idea of paying Precursor Games to be a product spokesman sounds unusual, but then again, some fans have already made such pledges. Moreover, the game has gotten endorsements from the likes of Bioware co-founder Ray Muzyka and voice actor David Hayter, who also happens to play a detective in the game.
To give you a better idea of what 'Shadow of the Eternals' is about, we asked Denis to give us an overview while the game's video demo played:

Legendary Pictures is still slowly but surly developing a big screen adaptation of Electronic Arts and BioWare's Mass Effect franchise. They just hired writer Morgan Davis Foehl to take a crack at the script that was previously worked on by Thor scribe Mark Protosevich.
None of the scripts written by Foehl have been produced so I have no idea if he's a good writer or not. He previously worked as an assistant editor on the TV show Rescue Me and the Adam Sandler film I Now Pronounce You Chuck and Larry. One of the scripts he wrote, Whatever Gets You Through the Night, landed on 2009's Black List. He also wrote an adaptation of the Top Cow comicbook Crosshair for Summit.
According to Variety he's a big Mass Effect fan, "and has also penned action pics with a strong espionage bent, material similar to the overall plot of the Mass Effect games.

When it was announced back in May 2010 that Bioware’s critically-acclaimed Mass Effect would be making it to the big screen, fans were buzzing with excitement over the prospect of seeing Commander Shepard fighting the apocalyptic Reapers in his debut film. And why shouldn’t they be? Mass Effect has become one of those franchises with real blockbuster potential, having established itself in the sci-fi genre as a contender to Star Wars over the past eight years. So why, you may ask, have I bothered to write this article? Well, I’m going to tell you.
To begin with, history has not been when it comes to adapting videogames into movies. Admittedly, there have been some which have managed to avoid being discredited by their fans (Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time and Hitman) but neither have they been Box Office hits. The last two of the original three founders of the video game studio BioWare have announced their intention to retire from the company.
Dr. Greg Zeschuk and Dr. Ray Muzyka have picked an interesting time to announce their retirement. Dragon Age III: Inquisition‘s development was just revealed, and is speculated to release fall 2013. Additionally, Casey Hudson is planning to make further inroads into the Mass Effect series, possibly with an entirely new game.
For the time being, however, fans of BioWare will be mourning the loss of the two doctors, who were instrumental in developing such legendary titles as Jade Empire, Knights of the Old Republic, Mass Effect and Dragon Age among others.
In a statement to their fans, the two doctors highlighted the reasons for their decision to leave. Muzkya commented:

BioWare, one of the gaming industry’s leading RPG developers has released several news items in the past few hours that have really shaken up the gaming world. Firstly, Greg Zeschuk and Ray Muzyka will be departing BioWare for greener pastures. That, for those of you who don’t know who those men are, is very, very bad news, as they were the co-founders and lead creative voices behind BioWare since it’s creation.
So, now that you know that the minds behind some of the greatest RPGs ever made are leaving the company they founded, you’ve probably decided that you’re past the part where that news sucks, right? I can hear you saying to me, “Surely, they are planning on founding a company that is free from the restraints of EA’s presumably immense team of marketing gurus.”
First, don’t call me “Shirley” (classic!), second, that’s not the case.

Over 17 years after founding the company together, CEO Ray Muzyka and Vice President Greg Zeschuck are saying goodbye to the company that they built.
Announced over at BioWare's blog with follow-up posts from both Greg and Ray in separate entries, where the duo explain their reasons for leaving while thanking fans and friends of the company as well as BioWare's owners EA for all the support.
This is kind of a bummer for fans of BioWare's titles given how instrumental Greg and Ray appeared to be over the years to the company's vision as well as its passionate community (and the seeming passionate devotion of BioWare employees). The unlikely game developers, who started out as med school students who would up dabbling in programming, comes to what feels like an abrupt end, even as Muzyka explains in his post that he'd announced his intentions to step down back in April to EA.

Since its release this past March, the ending of the Mass Effect videogame trilogy has sparked fan derision from across the internet, spawning a grassroots movement known as “Retake Mass Effect” to target gamemaker Bioware and even independent platforms such as Amazon as part of an effort to spur a better resolution to the game’s ending. The passion of this backlash, even when compared with recent controversies like Diablo III’s suspicious server issues, was overwhelming. It prompted a...

Bioware have confirmed that they are to release a free piece of Dlc called Mass Effect 3: Extended Cut.
The Dlc is designed to ‘expand upon the events’ seen at the end of the game through additional cinematic scenes, essentially clarifying the ending and addressing the concerns felt by some Mass Effect fans who felt that too much was left unanswered.
“We are all incredibly proud of Mass Effect 3 and the work done by Casey Hudson and team,” said BioWare co-founder Ray Muzyka. “Since launch, we have had time to listen to the feedback from our most passionate fans and we are responding.
“With the Mass Effect 3: Extended Cut we think we have struck a good balance in delivering the answers players are looking for while maintaining the team’s artistic vision for the end of this story arc in the Mass Effect universe.”

It's a measured, cool and collected response to an incredibly stupid non-issue.
I had my issues with Mass Effect 3, to the point where I felt like it might not have been the game that the superlative Mass Effect 2 deserved. But maybe I'm built differently somehow because when I reached the ending of the game, unlike some more vocal fans of the series, I didn't rend my garments and gnash my teeth, I moved on. It wasn't an especially good or particularly gripping ending, but also wasn't likely to be the end of the Mass Effectuniverse that BioWare and EA want to sell us.

Ever since Mass Effect 3 launched there has been an unprecedented backlash against the game because of the controversial ending. However, today Bioware co-founder Ray Muzyka announced that Bioware is currently working on new ending content for Mass Effect 3 that according to Muzyka should provide fans with “further closure”.

So we will know more in April, but the question is will Bioware be able to do enough to meet with their fans very high expectations? Muzyka didn’t announce multiple new endings like many of the fans want, basically he said they will provide better closer to the people who want it.

In an interview today BioWare co-founders Dr. Ray Muzyka and Dr. Greg Zeschuk admitted they have thought about making the next Mass Effect game an Mmo.
Here is what they had to say:
“You never know, I think once The Old Republic is done, we’ll take a fresh look at the market. And we’ll have learned a lot. While making it, you learn an enormous amount. We’re focused very much on The Old Republic, Mass Effect 3 and Wrath of Heroes, and all the other things we’ve announced, and haven’t announced, but we also have the opportunity to look at our franchises in a way we haven’t ever before. There are lots of new platforms and lots of new business models. It’s one of the nice things about having these properties in our back pocket. If we want to use something we own as a source for a game,...

It was finally announced at the Eurogamer Expo from Bioware that the long awaited video game Star Wars: The Old Republic will be released on December 20th 2011! This is sure to make Star Wars gamers incredibly excited and their significant others incredibly sad and disappointed. The Mass Effect trilogy is an incredible video game achievement (assuming you're assuming that Mass Effect 3 will be as insanely good as everyone else is assuming it will be), but it doesn't end with the third game in the series, which is set to hit shelves on March 6, 2012.
Speaking to PC Gamer at Gamescom recently, BioWare co-founder Dr. Ray Muzyka talked about the continuation of the series after Mass Effect 3. When asked if this was the end, Muzyka said “Not at all, no. We have ambitious plans to continue this franchise going forward. Mass Effect 3 is simultaneously a couple of different things: a thrilling and epic conclusion to the trilogy as we promised our fans we’d provide for Commander Shepard, but it’s also a brand new beginning – it’s an entry point for new fans and it’s also a brand new beginning.”

Dragon Age II was released earlier this year to good but not great reviews, however fans of the series destroyed the game with a 4.2 out of 10 user metacritic score. What has always impressed me about Bioware is, they are one of the few developers who always listens to their fans as a company uses their recommendations for future games, the forthcoming Dragon Age III included.
Dr. Ray Muzyka, CEO of BioWare had this to say:
“What we need to do as developers is take that feedback from both sets of fans to heart and see about marrying that in future games in the Dragon Age franchise. I think that the team has actually got a great plan. I think the team is going to have some things that are going to surprise both sets of fans, both core fans and new fans with a marriage of these… the best from both games,...

Last night, the Academy of Interactive Arts & Sciences held its 14th annual Interactive Achievement Awards in Las Vegas. They're a little like the Spike TV Video Game Awards, only with more respect and less misfired attempts at entertaining the gaming community. The top prize of the night, Game of the Year, went to BioWare's "Mass Effect 2," though Rockstar Games' "Red Dead Redemption" had a better overall showing, with five awards earned.
In addition to GotY, the BioWare role-playing game also picked up honors for Outstanding Achievement in Story and Role-Playing/Massively Multiplayer Game of the Year. "Red Dead," on the other hand, nabbed Outstanding Achievement in Art Direction (deservedly, I might add), Outstanding Achievement in Gameplay Engineering, Outstanding Achievement in Character Performance, Outstanding Achievement in in Game Direction and Action Game of the Year.
So... achievement unlocked then, right?
PlayStation 3-exclusive adventure "Heavy Rain" and indie beaut "Limbo" also got some love.

Electronic Arts dated "Mass Effect 2" for the PlayStation 3 last week, but users will have to substitute an interactive comic for "ME1" if they want to impact the trilogy's web of decisions and alterable outcomes. It turns out that this won't be an issue for "ME2" players when the third chapter arrives at the end of of 2011, however. A brief description of "Mass Effect 3" leaked out over EA's online store last week, and a trailer on the Vga's Saturday confirmed what it said; now, EA's brought their evolving announcement full circle with confirmation that "ME3" will launch "simultaneously" on the Xbox 360, PS3 and PC for the 2011 holiday season.

Mass Effect movie rights were officially picked up by Legendary Pictures. And yes, that means that finally this sci-fi epic set in the year 2183 is coming!
The movie is still in early development, but guys from Legendary Pics are currently in talks with script writer Mark Protosevich (who was in charge for projects I Am Legend, Thor, The Cell) to pen the Sci-Fi epic set in space.
Mass Effect is an action role – playing game developed by BioWare for the Xbox 360. Here’s the Mass Effect synopsis: “a sci-fi epic set in the year 2183, that centers on a war hero named Commander Shepard. Shepard become embroiled in a plot that involves an extinct race of aliens, mysterious beacons, an invasion of sentient robots known as the Geth, and a rogue black-ops agent called Saren.
To make things worse, humans are third-class citizens in this future, so few want to help or trust Shepard.
