Emily Gutierrez is a Toronto-born filmmaker whose work showcases the diverse stories of queer women. She is a first generation Canadian, with her parents being born and raised in the Philippines.
She attended John Cabot Catholic Secondary School, which is where her love of writing, photography, and filmmaking began.
She then did a joint program between the University of Toronto Mississauga and Sheridan College in which she majored in CCIT and minored in both Professional Writing and Italian Studies. Through her programs she realized that while she did want a job in the creative field, she did not know which career path to follow and began to work as a web designer.
Though Emily loved watching television and films all of her life, it wasn't until she was 31 years old that she realized what was missing - herself. She rarely saw any Asian characters on screen and finding queer female Asian characters were even more rare. This is when it became clear to her that this is what she wanted to do. She wanted to make content in which she saw herself and others like her. She combined her talents, took several film courses at Raindance Toronto, and created her first short film.
Her production company, Tabby Cat Productions, centers around a whole host of films that shed light on queer and Asian women.
Emily has created two short films, with Italian 101 being her most notable one yet.
