There was no need to worry that Reba McEntire might mess up or bring any unnecessary flourishes to “The Star-Spangled Banner” when she performed the National Anthem prior to the Super Bowl on Sunday evening. Unlike anyone else who’d done it prior to the Bowl or any other major NFL game in recent memory, she brought a full half-century’s experience of singing the anthem to the occasion.
The year 2024 marks a special anniversary for the country superstar and her association with the song: She is often said to have been “discovered” 50 years ago when she sang it at the 1974 National Finals Rodeo in her home state of Oklahoma, when she was just 19.
McEntire’s latest rendition of the anthem was more fully orchestrated than some other recent versions — or even her own past readings — have been, with a pre-recorded horn section sending the song toward a big climax.

Toronto–Hot Docs opening film “Nipawistamasowin: We Will Stand Up,” directed by Tasha Hubbard, won the Best Canadian Feature Documentary Award at the annual festival’s awards ceremony May 13, where 14 awards and Can$75,000 in cash and prizes were handed out to Canadian and international films and filmmakers at the Isabel Bader Theater.
Hubbard was on hand to accept the award, which comes with a Can$10,000 cash prize, for her film about a family’s pursuit of justice from Saskatchewan to the U.N. after the killer of their son Colten Boushie is acquitted of murder. “I’d like to thank this courageous family who trusted me, and who never gave up,” Hubbard said upon accepting it.

Back in July 2008, Matthew Gallagher's popular blog Kaboom: A Soldier's War Journal was shut down by the military brass after seven months of highly literate and very real posts about the war in Iraq. The plug was pulled after he failed to get the proper vetting for a post titled "The Only Difference Between Martyrdom and Suicide Is Press Coverage," in which he wrote candidly about a conversation with a superior officer, a breach of military protocol.
Three years after the flap caused by the shutdown, MTV News spoke to Gallagher — who turned his blog into the memoir "Kaboom: Embracing the Suck in a Savage Little War" last year — in the days leading up to the 10th anniversary of the September 11 attacks.

Family man, filmmaker and gambler Matt Gallagher hit tough times some years back. No work and a wife and child to support, he took his poker hobby and turned it into his profession. The hours were bad, the competition was brutal and the whole racket is illegal, but somewhere in that nasty brew was the idea for a film. 'Grinders' was born out of circumstance, need and luck.
This documentary follows the men (and some women) who make poker their lives. Old pros, up-and-comers, game managers and success stories make up the collage of characters profiled in the film. Gallagher travels from his native Toronto all the way to Las Vegas to tell his tale, and the results are fascinating.
