Both the teams need to win the match to qualify for the Group 4 stage but it will be a formidable task for Afghanistan to win it with the big margin. Both the teams are playing with the same playing XI.
After winning the toss, Sri Lanka skipper Dhasun Shanaka said: “It’s always handy to put runs on the board batting first, takes out the pressure of runs. We have a good bowling lineup and we would love to defend it.”
“Honestly we wanted to bowl first because Nrr is a big factor for us so we wanted to chase. We will try our best to take good decisions and play positively,” said Afghanistan skipper Hashmatullah Shahidi

Hambantota, Aug 24 (Ians) Afghanistan batter Rahmanullah Gurbaz’s run-a-ball 151 went in vain as Pakistan on half-centuries by opener Imam-ul Haq and skipper Babar Azam and a crucial 48 by Shadab Khan to win a last-over thriller for a one-wicket win in the second Odi here on Thursday.
Pakistan took an unassailable 2-0 lead in the Odi series against Afghanistan with a nail-biting win in a match that produced 602 runs, the highest match aggregate involving the two teams in ODIs.
In the death overs of the second innings which was filled with one dramatic moment after another, Pakistan managed to hold their nerve to win the second Odi by the barest of margins – with a ball and a wicket to spare.
Naseem Shah was once again the tormentor for Afghanistan as he snatched away what could have been their maiden Odi win against Pakistan.

Hambantota, Aug 22 (Ians) Ahead of the Asia Cup and the subsequent World Cup India, Pakistan pacers came up with a strong performance in the 1st Odi against Afghanistan here on Tuesday.
The Pakistan pacers shared eight wickets between them as they bowled Afghanistan out for 59 in the first Odi of the three-match series.
Haris Rauf (5-18) took a career-best haul while Shaheen Shah Afridi (2-9) and Naseem Shah (1-12) also hit top gear in Pakistan’s first Odi outside home in 2023.
Pakistan had struggled to gather momentum in their own batting innings, needing a late ninth-wicket stand to lift them past 200 against a strong Afghanistan bowling attack.
Opener Imam-ul-Haq was the only silver lining for Pakistan as he struck a 94-ball 61 while ShadabKhan (39) and Iftikhar Ahmed (30) too made vital contributions as the 1992 World Champions were all out 201 in 47.1 overs.
But the quicks ensured that Pakistan were on course for a win within the first 10 overs.

Kabul, Aug 6 (Ians) The 18-year-old left-arm spinner Noor Ahmad made a comeback as the Afghanistan Cricket Board announced a strong 18-member squad for the three-match Odi series against Pakistan to be played in Sri Lanka later this month.
For the series which will be a buildup for the Asia Cup and an important stop in firming up their squad for the upcoming Men’s Odi World Cup in India, Afghanistan brought back teenage spinner Noor Ahmad as they work out various combinations.
Noor’s return means that there was no room for left-arm spinner Zia Ur Rahman Akbar, who recently made his Odi debut against Bangladesh, the squad to be led by Hashmatullah Shahidi.
Uncapped leg-spinner Izhar-ul-haq Naveed, who was part of the Test squad, has also been left out for the three matches that will be played on August 22, 24 and August 26.

Sharjah, March 25 (Ians) A run-a-ball 38 not out by Mohammad Nabi after a brilliant display by their bowlers helped Afghanistan beat Pakistan by six wickets in the first of the three T20I matches here.
It’s been over 11 years since the two teams first played each other and Rashid Khan’s side has finally managed to win their first international match against Pakistan, playing without many regulars including skipper Babar Azam, here on Friday night.
Nabi figured in an unfinished 53-run partnership with Najibullah Zadran (17 not out) as they rescued Afghanistan from a precarious position to take them to 98/4 in 17.5 overs after the bowlers showed their class to restrict the new-look Pakistan side to 92/9 in their 20 overs.
It was a clinical performance by Afghanistan from start to finish as they put on a great display despite losing the toss and being asked to bowl first.

White-ball specialist Stoinis’ arrival fills a huge gap in the Warriors squad with the departures of star England trio — Moeen Ali, also the captain of Sharjah Warriors, Dawid Malan and Chris Woakes — on national duty to South Africa for three one-day internationals.
Sharjah Warriors fans will be banking on the ‘tough Australian spirit’ in Stoinis just as the team is beginning to stage a tremendous comeback in the six-team league with two back-to-back wins before a potential third at home on Thursday.

Dubai Jan 24 (Ians) Medium pacer Naveen-ul-Haq’s deadly spell of 5 for 38 wrecked table-toppers Gulf Giants’ batting to help Sharjah Warriors record a stunning 21 runs victory in Match 14 of the Dp World ILT20 at the Dubai International Stadium on Monday night.
Naveen-ul-Haq was backed by Chris Woakes (2-11) and Junaid Siddiqui (2-18) as they bowled with clinical accuracy and bundle out Gulf Giants for 130 in 19.4 overs
Sharjah had posted only a modest total of 151/7 in 20 overs. They came into this match defeating Dubai Capitals and thus recorded their second win while Gulf Giants’ four-match winning streak came to an end.
It was surprising that despite the heavy rains till one hour before the start, the match could commence on time. It was mainly due to Dubai International Stadium’s superb drainage system. The result of the match was even more surprising. For Sharjah Warriors Joe Denly top scored with 58 runs off...

Dubai, Jan 15 (Ians) Afghanistan all-rounder Mohammad Nabi said he had told Umran Malik in 2021 that he will play Indian Premier League (Ipl) after watching him bowl at nets.
The young Jammu and Kashmir seamer has produced some noteworthy performances in the Ipl and as well as in Indian jersey, and impressed many with his pace in the limited opportunities he got.
“When Umran Malik was a net bowler I told him, ‘You will play in the Ipl next year’. But he was selected in a week after Natraajan got injured. His party is still due,” Nabi told News 24 Sports.
Malik recently broke the record of the fastest delivery by an Indian in international cricket with a 156 kmph delivery in the first Odi against Sri Lanka. And he also holds bowling speed records by an Indian in T20Is (155 kmph), Ipl (157 kmph), and ODIs (156 kmph).

New Delhi, Dec 26 (Ians) Ahead of the inaugural edition of the ILT20 in the UAE, former India opener Virender Sehwag believes West Indies wicketkeeper-batter Nicholas Pooran is a dangerous player and if he comes in the form, then his team Mi Emirates stands to benefit hugely.
Pooran’s form has been a huge point of concern, amassing just 94 runs in his last 10 innings in T20Is. In West Indies’ shock first-round exit from the Men’s T20 World Cup in Australia, Pooran had scores of 5, 7 and 13 and stepped down as the side’s white-ball skipper.
“Nicholas Pooran is a dangerous player. While his performance in the Icc men’s T20 World Cup was not up to the mark, he is a brilliant player. In the recent Abu Dhabi T10 innings, he scored 70-80 runs in mere 20-25 balls. If he comes in the form, it will definitely benefit Mi Emirates.

Kabul, Nov 19 (Ians) Afghanistan on Saturday announced their 18-member squad for three Icc Cricket World Cup Super League ODIs against Sri Lanka, which will be played from November 25th to 30 in Kandy.

The 18-year-old Noor hasn’t yet made his Odi debut but has already built up quite the reputation in various T20 leagues around the world. He returned figures of 4 for 10 on his T20I debut — joint-best debut figures in a T20I involving two Full-Member teams — and was more recently part of Afghanistan’s 2022 Asia Cup squad.

Adelaide, Nov 4 (Ians) Australia managed to survive a late cameo from Rashid Khan to edge Afghanistan by four runs in their final Group 1 match in Super 12s of Men’s T20 World Cup at the Adelaide Oval on Friday.
After Glenn Maxwell made an unbeaten 54 off 32 balls to carry Australia to a competitive 168/6, Gulbadin Naib and Ibrahim Zadran were leading Afghanistan to a famous win with their 59-run stand off 46 balls for the third wicket.
But Australia made a comeback, triggering an Afghanistan collapse from 99/2 to 103/6. But Rashid kept the fight alive for an improbable victory with a 23-ball 48, hitting three fours and four sixes at a strike rate of 208.7.

Brisbane, Nov 1 (Ians) Sri Lankan spinner Wanindu Hasaranga grabbed three wickets for 13 runs as the 2014 T20 World Cup champions thrashed Afghanistan by six wickets to keep their hopes — however slim — alive of a semifinal berth here on Tuesday.
Thanks to the 25-year-old Hasaranga’s exploits, Afghanistan were restricted to 144/8 before the Islanders knocked off the required runs with nine balls to spare, earning two valuable points and taking their tally to four from four games.
Hasaranga had emerged the leading wicket-taker at last year’s T20 World Cup and the Sri Lanka all-rounder is on track to match that feat in the ongoing edition of the tournament. He was also adjudged ‘Player of the Match’ at The Gabba.
The star bowler grabbed the key wicket of Usman Ghani (27) early and then returned at the back end to dismiss fellow spinners Rashid Khan (9) and Mujeeb Ur Rahman (1).

Dubai, Oct 31 (Ians) Veteran batter Gulbadin Naib has replaced injured opener Hazratullah Zazai in the Afghanistan squad at the Men’s T20 World Cup 2022 in Australia, the International Cricket Council (Icc) confirmed on Monday.
Hard-hitting opener Zazai, who holds the record for the second-highest score in the history of men’s T20I cricket for his brilliant 162 not out against Ireland in Dehradun in 2019, has been battling an abdominal and kidney concern and has been ruled out for the remainder of the tournament.
Naib, who is a travelling reserve in Australia and was named as Zazai’s replacement, will get a chance to play his first T20I in almost a year, later this tournament.
“The Event Technical Committee of the Icc Men’s T20 World Cup 2022 has approved Gulbadin Naib as a replacement for Hazratullah Zazai in the Afghanistan squad,” the Icc said in a statement.

Melbourne, Oct 28 (Ians) The Group 1 clash of the Super 12 stage in the Men’s T20 World Cup between Afghanistan and Ireland on Friday has been abandoned without a ball being bowled due to persistent rain at the iconic Melbourne Cricket Ground (McG).
Both teams will now receive a point each. Friday’s match takes the tally of games being abandoned due to rain this week to three. In Afghanistan’s case, it is their second straight no-result after the washout against New Zealand at the same venue on Wednesday.

Both teams will now receive a point each. Friday’s match takes the tally of games being abandoned due to rain this week to three. In Afghanistan’s case, it is their second straight no-result after the washout against New Zealand at the same venue on Wednesday.

Providence, Sep 28 (Ians) The Jamaica Tallawahs gave themselves a chance to get into the final as they beat the Saint Lucia Kings in the Eliminator. They won by 33 runs and will now go to Qualifier 2 of the Hero Caribbean Premier League (Cpl).
In the Qualifier 2, Jamaica will meet Guyana Amazon Warriors, who lost to Barbados in the other match of the day.
The Saint Lucia Kings won the toss and opted to field first and took full advantage of that decision with a disciplined bowling display. The Tallawahs were never comfortable. However, some late order hitting from Mohammed Nabi helped them post a defendable total.
The Kings restricted the Tallawahs to just 29 for 2 in the PowerPlay as Matthew Forde and Alzarri Joseph bowled exceptional lengths.
The Kings continued to take wickets at regular intervals and when Kesrick Williams removed Chris Green for two the Tallawahs found themselves 115 for 8. However, Nabi...

Dubai, Sep 14 (Ians) Star India batter Virat Kohli has risen 14 spots to 15th overall on the Icc T20I batter rankings due to his efforts in the recently-concluded Asia Cup in the UAE. Kohli scored his first international century in almost three years — against Afghanistan — and scored 276 runs in the continental showpiece event.
Kohli has some way to go before he is back into contention for the top ranking for T20I batters, but he is at least moving in the right direction now after returning to form during the Asia Cup.
The champion right-hander was the big mover near the top of the T20I batter rankings, with India team-mate Kl Rahul (up seven places to 23rd) and Sri Lanka star Bhanuka Rajapaksa (up 34 spots to 34th) also making good ground on those players near the top.

Dubai, Sep 8 (Ians) Already out of the tournament, India signed off from Asia Cup 2022 on a high with a 101-run thrashing of Afghanistan in their final Super Four match at the Dubai International Stadium on Thursday.
In a dead rubber, talismanic batter Virat Kohli gave Indian fans tons of reasons to be happy. As captain Rohit Sharma was rested, Kohli was promoted to open the batting. What followed next was something which anyone could have predicted, leaving Kohli himself surprised.
Kohli ended his drought of not scoring a century in international cricket for 1020 days with a sensational career-best 122 off just 61 balls, laced with 12 fours and six sixes, at a strike-rate of 200.
After a rollicking opening stand of 119 off 76 balls, with stand-in captain Kl Rahul making 65 of those runs, Kohli accelerated amazingly from 59 off 40 balls to get his next 63 runs off just 21 balls to score a long-standing 71st international century. On...

Dubai, Sep 8 (Ians) Stand-in India captain Kl Rahul expressed disappointment over missing out on playing the final of Asia Cup 2022, saying that it was something which the side had thought of featuring, which didn’t go in their favour.
Thursday’s match against Afghanistan in Dubai, which they won by 101 runs, was India’s final match of Asia Cup 2022. The defending champions had topped Group A after winning matches against Pakistan and Hong Kong.
But they lost both of their matches against Pakistan and Sri Lanka in the Super Four stage. After Pakistan got a breath-taking one-wicket win over Afghanistan at Sharjah on Wednesday, India’s chance of defending their Asia Cup title ended.
“The result has been disappointing. Ideally, we would have wanted to play the final and challenge ourselves. We came into this tournament wanting to play the final and winning the big tournaments but it didn’t go our way,...

Dubai, Sep 8 (Ians) Senior pacer Bhuvneshwar Kumar blew the top-order away with his skillful bowling to record his career-best T20I figures as India beat Afghanistan by 101 runs in a dead-rubber match of Super Four stage in Asia Cup 2022 at the Dubai International Stadium on Thursday.
After Virat Kohli ended his drought of not scoring a century in international cricket for 1020 days with a sensational career-best 122 off just 61 balls to power India to 212/2, Bhuvneshwar’s spell of 5/4 dismantled the Afghanistan challenge, restricting them to 111/8 in 20 overs.
Bhuvneshwar was right on the money from the word go, shaping one back in to trap Hazratullah Zazai lbw. Two balls later, he produced an absolute jaffa to shatter Rahmanullah Gurbaz’s stumps to send both openers back to pavilion in the opening over.
Swinging the ball both ways and relentlessly pitching in right areas, Bhuvneshwar was making Afghanistan batters dance to his tunes.

Dubai, Sep 8 (Ians) Opener Kl Rahul is captaining India in place of regular captain Rohit Sharma as Afghanistan won the toss and elected to bowl first in a dead-rubber of Super Four stage in Asia Cup 2022 at the Dubai International Stadium on Thursday.

On Wednesday, Pakistan got a breath-taking one-wicket win over Afghanistan at Sharjah, which meant the Babar Azam-led side got themselves into the final against Sri Lanka on Sunday, knocking India and Afghanistan out of the competition.
