PlayStation Blog brings word of a new and, seemingly, fairly big firmware update headed to PlayStation 4.
Much like 3.00 and 3.50 before it, PS4 users can sign up to participate in the beta program for update 4.0, which is expected to take place in early August. If you’re already a member of said program, you should be good to go. North American readers can find further details of how to partake in the testing here, while those in Europe can toss their proverbial hat into the ring right here.
Ahead of the imminent system update, Sony’s John Koller outlined some pertinent details via Ps Blog.
If you’re part of the program, you’ll receive an email with instructions on downloading the beta version of the next system software. In order to sign up, you’ll need a PS4 with an internet connection, and access to a Master Account. And remember...

Having carved out a niche audience on PlayStation Network back in March, Sony is pushing ahead with the sophomore outing of Powers, the live-action series adapted from Brian Michael Bendis and Michael Avon Oeming’s acclaimed comic book source material. And to prove it, the Japanese giant has unveiled the first trailer for season 2.

PlayStation’s first original series is back for another season. Sony Computer Entertainment announced it will develop a second season of the PlayStation Plus-hosted show Powers.
Developed by Sony Pictures TV, Jinxworld, and Circle of Confusion (the studio behind AMC’s hit series The Walking Dead), Powers stars Sharlto Copley and Susan Heyward as two homicide detectives investigating cases about people with super abilities, dubbed “Powers.” The second season will continue to follow the law officers’ efforts to stop the Powers from ruling humanity.
“The reception to Powers has been incredible and we are thrilled to have successfully launched a platform for original content with the PlayStation gamer in mind,” said John Koller, Vice President of Platforms Marketing of Sony Computer Entertainment America, to Deadline. “We believe original content will continue to be a key pillar as we broaden the value proposition for PlayStation Plus, and we’re excited for...

It's fair to say that the critical reception to Sony's Powers has been mixed. Rated at 50% over on Rotten Tomatoes and a 51 on Metacritic, Psn's first original show never appeared to take off in the same manner as rival company Netflix. That said, it's clear the show must have impressed some of its viewership, as earlier today Sony announced it had been renewed for a second season. Speaking about the renewal to THR, John Koller (VP Platforms Marketing at Sony Computer Entertainment America) had a lot of positives to say about the show: "The reception to Powers has been incredible, and we are thrilled to have successfully launched a platform for original content with the PlayStation gamer in mind. Sony’s superhero drama Powers may not have lit up the PlayStation Network in a way the company would have hoped – perhaps stifled by the success of Marvel’s Daredevil – but that doesn’t mean the Japanese giant isn’t prepared to have another crack of the whip. In fact, The Hollywood Reporter has learned that Sony will bring the series back in 2016 for season 2.

With Microsoft’s Xbox One all but confirmed to be a massive step forward for exciting innovations in DRM and a means for the company to basically take over the used game market, core gamers have started a campaign aimed at putting pressure on Sony to not make the same tragic mistake with the upcoming PlayStation 4.
Over the weekend NeoGAF users started flooding the Twitter accounts belonging to Sony executives — like Shuhei Yoshida (President of Sony Worldwide Studios) @yosp, and John Koller (head of hardware marketing) @jpkoller – using the hashtags #PS4noDRM and #PS4UsedGames. So far, the main focus of the campaign has been to request that Sony respect consumer rights by letting the PlayStation 4 handle used game sales in the exact same way that they currently work on the PS3. Sony announced today that a new color for the Playstation 3 is coming to North America, and with it will come a 500gb harddrive on top of a year's subscription to Playstation Plus, which essentially gives you an instant collection of games to play.
The new "Classic White" PS3 will launch in the Us and Canada on January 27th (just a couple weeks away) and, as stated, will come with a year of Playstation Plus for $299.99. Considering that Ps Plus currently offers 18 full games (good ones too) for the PS3 completely free, that seems like one hell of a deal to me. If you've been waiting on getting a PS3 (why?) then now is definitely the time. Sure, in a year if you don't resubscribe you'll lose all those games, but to be able to play 18 new games with your new console immediately is still pretty awesome. Here's the full press...

Sony has revealed it's optimism towards its latest handheld console, by revealing they believe it to have a 10-year life span.
In an interview with IGN, John Koller, vice president of hardware marketing at Sony Computer Entertainment America, stated "We're in year one, so we'll be supporting it for some time. But yeah, it does have its own 10-year life cycle. All of our platforms do...it's a marathon, not a sprint. We expect long-term success from all our platforms."
The Ps Vita has had a reasonably slow start in terms of sales, selling only 2.2 million as of June 30th this year, considering it's release on December 17th 2011. This shows especially in comparison with it's rival, the Nintendo 3Ds, which was released some months before the Ps Vita on February 26th 2011 in Japan. One of the bigger problems that Sony had with the PSP was that they positioned the handheld as a way to take “console-like” games on the go, which happens to be the same message that they are using with the PlayStation Vita. Many PSP developers grabbed onto this idea and ported their console titles over to the system. The problem this created was that consumers started to view the PSP’s port library as a reason not to own the handheld.
Speaking to Gamasutra, Sony’s marketing VP, John Koller, admitted the PSP’s “console-like games on portables” message was a problem. He then explained how the Ps Vita‘s “console-like games on portables” message will not saddle the new handheld with the same problems.

Sony is hoping the new registration tactic that is part of the newly-released Socom: U.S. Navy SEALs Fireteam Bravo 3 will help in combating piracy. The game includes a voucher code in the box that you must enter online with your Psn account. This code allows you to play the multiplayer portion of the game. If you buy the game used, you can purchase a code for $20 to gain access to online play. Digital copies of the game automatically register when they are purchased.
John Koller of Scea believes that fan reception to the feature will be positive.
My opinion on the matter is that, while I do see the larger benefits of this (promoting new game sales over used), I think that the $20 price for online play is pretty steep. If this feature is implemented more frequently, renting PSP games from a site like Gamefly could prove to be pretty useless.

With 3-D televisions and Blu-ray players expected to arrive in stores this year, it makes sense that Sony would be toying around with ways to make the PlayStation 3 as big of a player as possible. Leaked peeks at the console's next firmware update indicate that the PS3 could be ahead of the game, if a 3-D video output option turns out to be legit.
Screen captures from the PS3's 3.20 update clearly show the option, according to VG247, where the shots were posted. It appears the output can be set to automatic or something else.
The presence of the 3-D ability will likely coincide with or come out ahead of "Gran Turismo 5," which Sony has already shown off in 3-D. "GT5" may show up this summer, since it was pushed back from a planned March launch. That would time it to hit stores about the same time 3-d-capable TV's show up.

Sony doesn't seem to have any qualms about setting a high bar for its new motion technology peripherals, which may or may not be called "Gem." The PS3 motion controller still hasn't been officially explained, but the company believes they have a game-changer on their hands that will out-perform the Wii and Project Natal.
“I think the areas that are going to be really critical to our success will be family games, as well as shooters and sports games,” Sony director of hardware marketing John Koller GamePro. “Those are going to be the areas that will really define success, because they're areas that quite honestly, I think Project Natal and the Wii are going to have trouble matching, from a differentiation standpoint."
Sony will have to do more than just make motion-based family, shooter and sports games, which the Wii already has an ample supply of and has been hosting since its launch.

When Sony revealed the PSP Go this week, it confirmed rumors that the handheld console won't use the unpopular Umd format. In fact, it looks like Sony really wants you to trade-up to a Go: It'll convert your old Umd games for you, possibly for free.
This news came when Gizmodo's Mark Wilson cornered a Sony executive at E3 this week. Wilson wanted to know how Sony was going to deal with its "loyal fanbase" who bought earlier versions of the PSP and had a stack of Umd-version games, but want to get a PSP Go. Sony's Director of Hardware Marketing John Koller gave the somewhat surprising answer that Sony was quickly putting together a "good will program", based on the company's Portable Copy solution that lets users downconvert Blu-ray movies for PSP compatibility, that would let gamers swap old Umd games for new digital-only versions.

Whoops! Thanks to some prematurely leaked footage from Sony’s official Qore show, just about every juicy bit of information has been leaked about the PSP Go, the upcoming redesign for the PSP.
As predicted, the device will lack a Umd drive, instead opting for 16 gigs of internal memory. John Koller of PlayStation is reported as saying the following:
“It’s a 3.8-inch screen, it’s 43 percent lighter than the PSP-3000, 16 gigs flash memory, Bluetooth support and all digital content so the Umd drive goes away so it’s going to be something a lot of consumers like - download straight to a hard drive.”
There’s little doubt this is going to be a large part of Sony’s E3 press conference this Tuesday, so be sure to tune in as we live blog the event.
