The medium of cinema is brilliantly, endlessly malleable. It's an art form able to communicate so many perspectives, stories, emotions and the like, yet there are some genres that feel especially inherent to the medium. Action is undeniably one of these; even the most basic, average action movie combines elements of sound, cinematography, actors giving performances that are equal parts physical and vocal, music, choreography and more. In other words, it takes every element available to the filmmaker to construct a convincing, engaging action sequence, something that can't be exactly replicated in, say, a song, picture, or painting.
Perhaps this is one reason why so many action films dabble in myth: the very construction of an action film requires the establishment of a hyper-reality, so it follows that larger-than-life themes, tropes, and traditions would fit inside such a world. This is a...

“Adipurush,” director Om Raut’s retelling of Indian mythological epic “Ramayana,” emerged the fifth highest box office earner in the world in its opening weekend, despite some mixed reviews at home.
The film, which stars Prabhas (the Baahubali franchise), Kriti Sanon (“Bhediya”) and Saif Ali Khan (“Vikram Vedha”), opened on June 16 worldwide in Hindi, Telugu Tamil, Malayalam and Kannada-language versions. Raut’s storytelling, which uses modern techniques to retell the ancient epic, divided critics, but evidently had little dissuasive effect on audiences.
“Adipurush” scored a $2.5 million weekend in the U.S. and $30.6 million internationally, including India, making it the fifth highest weekend grosser after “The Flash,” “Transformers: Rise of the Beasts,” “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse” and “Elemental,” according to numbers released by Comscore. It was the second highest Indian worldwide opener of the year after Shah Rukh Khan’s “Pathaan” and the fifth highest Indian opener of all time after “Baahubali 2: The Conclusion,...

EntertainmentThe Prabhas-Kriti Sanon starrer has been subjected to brutal trolling on social media by fans and Hindu right-wing nationalists, who are disappointed with director Om Raut’s modern retelling of the Ramayana. The internet has been abuzz with news of actor Prabhas’s new film Adipurush, which released on Friday, June 16. The Prabhas-Kriti Sanon starrer has been harshly criticised and subjected to brutal trolling on social media. The highly anticipated film, made on a reported budget of Rs 600 crore, has garnered the wrath of fans and Hindu right-wing nationalists, who are disappointed with director Om Raut’s retelling of the mythological Ramayana in a relatively contemporary form. Saif Ali Khan, who plays Ravana in the film, is seen sporting a modern haircut and wearing heavy kaajal. Other characters such as Vibhishana (Ravana’s younger brother) and Indrajith (Ravana’s eldest son) also sport funky tattoos and modern hairstyles. It is indeed strange that the movie,...

Mumbai, June 17 (Ians) The latest release ‘Adipurush’, starring Prabhas and Kriti Sanon, has garnered a lot of flak on social media for its VFX, script, design and direction, but one of the things that netizens have been particularly ruthless in their criticism about is its dialogues.
Dialogues specifically regarding the Lanka Dahan scene where Lord Hanuman is heard mouthing the lines “jalegi bhi tere baap ki” to Meghnad.
A day after its release, Twitterati erupted with criticism and relentless trolling of the dialogues which most termed as “tapori” and “chapri” which do not fit the nature or the stature that one associates with Valmiki’s legendary epic Ramayana.
A user wrote: “Of the Lanka Dahan scene, Ravana’s son lights up Hanuman ji Tail: Jali na.. Abhi to aur jalegi. Jiski jalti hai wahi janta hai.”
“Hanuman ji: Kapda tere baap ka. Tel tere baap ka. Aag bhi tere baap ki.

Adipurush is an Indian mythological film based on the Hindu epic Ramayana by Valmiki. The film is written and directed by Om Raut. While Adipurush literally translates to ‘first man’, Om Raut interprets it as ‘best man’ in the context of the film. We have two great references – ‘Ramayana’ (1987) – of course the most loved and revered version by Ramanand Sagar and the other being ‘Ramayana: The Legend of Prince Rama’ (1993) by Yugo Sako. Frankly, for the generation who have loved either or both find it difficult to sink into anything else. There have been number of other attempts too, to create the epic. Om Raut who shot to fame with Tanhaji is the latest to attempt re-telling the epic; finds it too hot to handle!

Actor Manohar Pandey, who is best known for his work in films like ‘Gangubai Kathiawadi’ and ‘Super 30’, plays the role of Angad, son of Bali and the nephew of the Vanar king Sugriv in Om Raut’s mythological film ‘Adipurush’.
The actor initially faced difficulty because the scenes were being shot through motion capture.
Speaking of the difficulties he faced whilst playing Angad, Manohar said: “Yes, it was a big challenge because first time in India I think motion capture has been done by director Om Raut and I am part of it, so I didn’t know about how motion capture is going to be shot. We did intense workshops before shooting to understand the technicalities of motion capture.”

If you ever considered catching up with mammoths of world literature in a moviesque nutshell, this 1993’s Japanese animation may be a good way to tick off the Indian epic “Ramayana.” Yes, you’ve read it correctly. Indian classic made in Japan. It was marketed as an Indian-Japanese co-production, and Indian Ram Mohan, the co-director, aided a lot with culture-sensitive elements during the proceedings. However, the majority of the crew involved in this production were Japanese and all the work took place in Japan.

‘Adipurush’, one of the most anticipated Indian films of 2023, whose first teaser was released on Sunday, unites the talents of Prabhas (of the ‘Baahubali’ franchise) and Om Raut, who directed the Ajay Devgn-starrer ‘Tanhaji: The Unsung Warrior’, the biggest Indian box office hit of 2020, reports ‘Variety’.
‘Adipurush’ is Raut’s take on the ‘Ramayana’ by Valmiki. The film is set 7,000 years ago and, in the film, Prabhas’s character is not called Lord Ram, he is Raghav, which is yet another name for Ram.
Sita, played by Kriti Sanon, is called Janaki (as in King Janaka’s daughter), while Saif Ali Khan’s Ravana is Lankesh (Lord of Lanka), which are also derivatives of their ‘Ramayana’ names, notes ‘Variety’.
Adipurush literally means ‘first man’, but here the interpretation is that of ‘best man’.
Post ‘Tanhaji’, Raut could have called any Indian A-lister for his next film, but he chose Prabhas.

CinemaA look at performances from Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam and Kannada cinema that left us impressed. Sowmya Rajendran2020 was a dismal year for film industries as theatres remained closed for months. Consequently, many films released directly on Over-the-Top platforms. Actors, directors and producers also capitalised on the audience opening up to the relatively new medium and made content exclusively for the Ott market. Even though many of the big south Indian releases scheduled for this year were postponed, there were several notable films which were released. Perhaps these wouldn't have received the same attention if they'd gone to theatres first, considering the competition. In all the films which came out this year — in theatres and Ott — several actors made their mark. Here's a look at such performances from Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam and Kannada cinema that left us impressed, irrespective of whether the films worked overall or not. The list is in the order of the release.

ReviewThe typical Trivikram movie is largely clean and highly entertaining in the second half, well-shot by Ps Vinod.Krishna SripadaOf all the directors in the Telugu film industry, Trivikram’s words carry the most weight, literally and double figuratively. He is a man of literature and philosophy. That’s why his slightest shenanigans break your heart, because educated, thinking writers cannot be sexist or racist. But we forgive him too, because he dishes out gems in his movies, lines that cinema audiences otherwise would never encounter, because who reads these days anyway? Ala Vaikuntapurramulo – what a wonderful sounding title – is a typical Trivikram movie. This one too tries to tell you a nice story in a nice way, weighed down by the expectations of fans – you can almost hear Telugu fans crying ‘where is the comedy’, ‘where are the fights’, ‘why is the movie slow’, etc. Bantu (Allu Arjun) is the son of a secretary,...

ReviewThere's no story, just a random screenplay where scenes appear to have been added because well, the audience has two and a half hours to kill. Krishna SripadaIt is probably true that no one sets out to make a bad movie. There is money involved. There are actors like Sri Vishnu involved, displaying all the honesty and sincerity that an aspiring star has before he loses it all after making it big. And then, there is the need to squeeze the resources to the best use they can be put to. All of that reflects in Krishna Vijay's Thippara Meesam, the effort that a bunch of not so well-known members of the film fraternity have put in their cinema. But, what's missing is the soul. You can jump up a hundred times to reach a fruit hanging high from a tree, but if you don't have the necessary skills or tools,...

TollywoodThe title was changed just one day before the film’s release.Tnm Staff After a relentless campaign by the Boya community, who objected to the title of Varun Tej’s Valmiki, the film’s title has been changed to Gaddhalakonda Ganesh, just a day before the film’s release. The title was changed on Thursday night after some groups from the Boya community threatened to protest in Anantapur and Kurnool districts, following which the district collectors had sought the filmmakers to resolve the issue. The Boya community, who claim to be the descendants of the sage Valmiki, who wrote the mythological book Ramayana, took offence to the film’s title claiming that their sentiments were hurt. The community, categorised as Scheduled Tribes in the state, worship Valmiki as a deity. When film’s title was announced, the Boya community began objecting to the film’s release and demanded that the title be changed.
