Naomi Pacifique is a filmmaker who stood out to Dn when we first caught her short film after a room as part of the London Film School’s graduate showcase earlier in the year. Amongst a plethora of innovative and exciting student films, Pacifique’s short left an indelible mark as it was unlike anything else screening in the best way. Her short, which won the Pardino d’Argento Swiss Life at Locarno Film Festival and premieres with Dn today, is a lucid and sensual film about the exploration of the body between two lovers in their apartment. Pacifique stars in the film and weaves footage of her younger self amongst the tactile encounters, creating a thought-provoking excavation of our ongoing relationship with ourselves and our bodies. You can watch after a room below and follow it up with our in-depth chat with Pacifique where she reveals her intentions for the film,...

The next generation of filmmakers converged at the Tabakalera – International Center for Contemporary Culture in San Sebastian for the three-day Nest Film Student program (Sept. 20-22).
Three students/graduates represented Switzerland, more than any other nation, reflecting what program head, Maialen Franco, tells Variety is a surge in talent from the European country.
“In the last few years, we have noted an exponential increase in the reception of short films from Swiss Film Schools, such as Hochschule Luzern, Head-Genève, Zurich University and Ecal,” she says. “We try to always make an international selection. There might be a surge of new talent in one place, and this is a very positive fact. And this year, we are delighted with the selection of the Swiss filmmakers with their very different proposals.”
The three Swiss filmmakers competing for this year’s award have already traveled the world to make their shorts.

The 2020 British Independent Film Awards nominations were revealed Wednesday morning by British actors Holliday Grainger (“The Borgias”) and Micheal Ward (“Lovers Rock”). Leading the list of nominees this year is Rose Glass’ horror movie “Saint Maud” with an impressive 17 nominations. A24 has U.S. distribution rights, but canceled a spring 2020 release due to the pandemic. While the film managed to open in the UK, it has yet to grace stateside screens outside of film festivals.
Another horror movie, Remi Weekes’ refugee nightmare story “His House,” trails close behind with 16 nominations. That film is available to stream on Netflix. With 15 nominations is Sarah Gavron’s teen tale “Rocks.” “Calm with Horses,” titled in the U.S. as “The Shadow of Violence,” has 10 nominations, while “Mogul Mowgli” starring Riz Ahmed has seven. Florian Zeller’s Oscar hopeful “The Father,” with Anthony Hopkins, also is ahead of the pack with six nominations.

The British Independent Film Awards work tirelessly to champion the very best in British film. This year we’re proud to work with them again to look closer at the films that make up the 2020 BIFA Best Short Film Award longlist. Along with details of the films we have included trailers, weblinks and glowing comments from BIFA voters.
The BIFA Best British Short Film Award is proud to be supported by BFI Network, who exist to discover, support, develop and champion new filmmakers.
There will be a virtual event on the 25th of November for the longlisted filmmakers featuring clips, interviews and a Q&a. HeyUGuys will be part of that event, but check out the BIFA website for more information.
It’s always a pleasure to present this list. Each year we find the British film industry in rude health, with more voices and visions being brought to the fore.
