Richard H. Truly(1937-2024)
He was a naval pilot, test pilot and astronaut who worked in NASA's space shuttle program after the Challenger explosion in 1986. He eventually became the first astronaut to serve as NASA's top administrator.
He received a bachelor's degree in aeronautical engineering from Georgia Tech, which he attended on a Navy ROTC scholarship, and joined the Navy after graduation.
In 1981, he piloted the space shuttle Columbia on its second mission. Not only was it his birthday, but he was also the first grandfather in space.
