Wernli grew up in Basel, attended high school and earned a federal diploma in commerce. She lived in the U.S. for five years, completing acting training in Los Angeles and "Professional Designation in Marketing" (marketing planner) training at the University of California (UCLA) in Los Angeles. She later trained as a PR specialist at the Swiss Public Relations Institute (SPRI) and completed her university studies with a Bachelor of History, "BA (Hons) History", at the Open University, Milton Keynes (UK). She writes and speaks fluent English, French, German and Swiss German.
She now works in Basel as a freelance presenter, columnist, author and web video producer. At the Basler Zeitung she wrote weekly about social issues in her column "Tamaras Welt". At the TV station Telebasel, she worked as a news presenter for almost 20 years starting in 1999 and also contributed there as a longtime host, producer and editor of her own talk shows ("CinéBâle", "Tamara uff Bsuech", "Kochen im Schloss"). In addition, she wrote portraits, interviews, columns and reports for companies. At the end of 2018, she moved to Weltwoche as a columnist.
Wernli wrote several books and occasionally published texts at the Huffington Post Germany, until 2017 at the Achse des Guten and until mid-2019 in the magazine Tichys Einblick. She also maintains a channel on YouTube.
