At a time when the true-crime genre has reached a creative nadir, as streaming services churn out assembly-line products that prioritize shock value over victims’ stories — and even stoop to paying perpetrators for exclusive access — Surviving R. Kelly stands out.

“Many have been waiting for this day to come.”
Kitti Jones entered a Brooklyn courthouse on Wednesday, ready to confront the man she says sexually and physically abused her for more than two years. In 2017, after years of silence, Jones came forward to detail her relationship with R. Kelly, which included frequent acts of coercive control, humiliation, abuse and a slew of draconian rules that dictated nearly every aspect of her life. Now, she and others were given the opportunity — ahead of the singer’s sentencing for racketeering and sex...

R. Kelly was sentenced to 30 years in prison Wednesday after being found guilty of all counts of racketeering and sex trafficking against him at his Brooklyn federal trial last year.
Prior to sentencing, seven of Kelly’s victims addressed the court to share impact statements and speak directly to their abuser. “I am a representation of every woman, boy, child, man that you have ever afflicted with your deplorable, inexplicable acts and with that I leave you with yourself, Robert Sylvester Kelly,” “Angela” — who also testified during the trial — said to Kelly.

R. Kelly could not look his survivors in the eye as they stood before the 55-year-old to describe through tears how his abuse forever altered their lives shortly before the disgraced R&b singer was sentenced on federal sex trafficking charges on Wednesday afternoon.
Seven women addressed Kelly one by one in Brooklyn’s Eastern District Court, with some detailing how they were teenagers when Kelly began grooming and sexually abusing them and expressing how they were speaking up to ensure no one else had to be subjected to his abuse.

Almost a year after the Lifetime documentary series “Surviving R. Kelly” brought public attention back to the R&b singer’s predatory behavior, six of the women who came forward with their accusations remain proud of their decision to speak out.
Lisa VanAllen, Lizzette Martinez, Kitti Jones, Jerhonda Pace, Faith Rodgers and Asante McGee spoke about their whirlwind year and Kelly’s arrest at WrapWomen’s 2019 Power Women Summit, held at the Fairmont Miramar Hotel in Santa Monica on Oct. 25. The six received a special tribute from actress and Harvey Weinstein accuser Mira Sorvino and artist and Bill Cosby survivor Lili Bernard.
“We didn’t ask to endure what made us survivors, but we had a choice of what to do with that,” said Sorvino, who became one of the most prominent figures of the #MeToo movement in 2017 after going public with a disturbing history of harassment and Hollywood blackballing...

Kitti Jones says she was sexually assaulted by R. Kelly, and it was her voice and that of other alleged victims that were amplified in the Lifetime documentary Surviving R. Kelly. Jones was joined by the documentary’s executive producer Brie Miranda Bryant on Sunday for a panel conversation at Deadline’s The Contender Emmys.
“I came forward in September or October of 2017,” Jones said. “I did stand alone when I first came forward and it was a very scary experience. There were rumors flying about what others experienced with him before but there was never anyone standing firm in a story. There was no face attached to it, so it was hard for people to forget.
Even with me meeting him around the time of the trial, I didn’t have a reason to not want to date him or support him. We were still playing his music on...

The honorees at Variety’s sixth annual Power of Women New York luncheon presented by Lifetime shared deeply personal stories that were variations on a powerful theme: Women overcoming obstacles, doubts, and naysayers to right wrongs, raise awareness, and bear witness to injustice.
“When a job needs to be done and nobody’s doing it, you step forward and you do it yourself,” said Bette Midler, one of five notable industry figures celebrated this year. “That’s what empowerment means to me.”
Midler was feted at Friday’s gathering at Cipriani Midtown for her role as the founder of New York Restoration Project, an organization that has worked to create a “cleaner and greener” New York City since 1995.
Christiane Amanpour, CNN’s chief international correspondent, was recognized for her work with the Committee to Project Journalists. Supermodel Gigi Hadid put the spotlight on Unicef. Actress Taraji P. Henson addressed the...

R. Kelly Accusers Get Standing Ovation at Variety’s Power of Women NY Luncheon: ‘Abuse Has No Limit’
Variety’s Power of Women celebration featured three women who told their stories in “Surviving R. Kelly,” Lisa Van Allen, Asante McGee and Kitty Jones, all of whom have leveled serious charges of sexual misconduct against R. Kelly.
In introducing the survivors, Lifetime’s Brie Bryant noted that the show started with two survivors and ended up with 54 — and 26.8 million viewers. She recalled Me Too founder Tarana Burke’s words at this event last year: “’Movements are made from moments,’” she said. “’Surviving R. Kelly is a movement, and it ignited a much-needed global conversation. The journey of these survivors does not start or stop with this documentary. For those of us who have been privileged to be a part of ‘Surviving R. Kelly,’ we will carry this experience with us forever.”

Alleged victims and the parents of an alleged victim say R. Kelly's behavior during his TV sit-down with CBS This Morning's Gayle King brought back horrible memories.
"When he started screaming, it terrified me," said Asante McGee, who has accused Kelly of mental and sexual abuse from living with the singer for three weeks. "He would cry at the drop of a dime. He's a great performer."

Updated: R. Kelly, who is charged with 10 counts of aggravated criminal sexual abuse involving four victims — three of whom were minors — aggressively denied any wrongdoing in an emotional interview with Gayle King on “CBS This Morning.”
At times, the singer — who, as detailed in the recent docuseries “Surviving R. Kelly,” has multiple accusations of sexual misconduct dating back 25 years — wept, yelled, stood up and violently waved his arms.
When asked by King if, as some have alleged, whether he is holding women captive against their will, he addressed the camera directly and shouted: “That’s stupid! Use your common sense. Forget the blogs, forget how you feel about me. Hate me if you want to, love me if you want. But just use your common sense.”
He went on, “How stupid would it be for me, with my crazy past and what I’ve been through – oh right now I...
