Eisner-nominated writer Phillip Kennedy Johnson (Incredible Hulk) and rising star artist Som (Brigands) give birth to an iconic new noir lead in the macabre new thriller Crocodile Black at Boom! Studios in May 2024.
What makes someone turn to crime–especially in a modern, pandemic-riddled dystopia?
During the height of the 2020 Covid-19 Pandemic, Danny–a seemingly mundane young man lost in escapism with a spiraling lack of control over his life–sees something during a delivery job that will change him forever, turning his life as dark as the black, crocodile-skin boots he can’t take his eyes off of…

This article contains Superman & Lois spoilers.
Superman & Lois Season 3 Episode 1
At a time when the movie and TV DC Universe is rapidly evolving, it’s refreshing to find that Superman & Lois is, right out of the gate, as good in its season three premiere as it was all through its freshman and sophomore years. And that first episode, “Closer,” picks up just a few short weeks after the spectacular season two finale, just in time for Jonathan and Jordan Kent to celebrate their 16th birthdays, and for new threats to begin rearing their heads, including a resurgent (and suddenly superpowered) Atom-Man, the mysterious and deadly Onomatopoiea, and a character with deep ties to one of the greatest creators in comics history: Jack Kirby.
And amidst everything else in that season premiere is just how, well, horny Lois and Clark are for each other. It’s part of a refreshing...

New York, NY— March 8, 2023 — The Age Of Monsters has begun, and the only being who can stop a legion of the world’s most depraved creatures from overtaking the Marvel Universe is the Incredible Hulk! Enter this horror-fueled new era of the strongest there is when writer Phillip Kennedy Johnson and artist Nic Klein relaunch Incredible Hulk this June!
Known for his acclaimed horror storytelling in titles like Alien and Marvel Zombies: Resurrection, Johnson will take Bruce Banner to sinister new depths when a war of monsters erupts with Hulk at its center. And following his explosive run on Thor with Donny Cates, Nic Klein’s skill at capturing the Hulk’s fearsome rage and his panache for body horror will make this the most terrifying book on stands! The pair will also explore Bruce Banner’s psychological state, left in shambles at the end of his latest run with...

Showcase is likely the series that comes to mind when one thinks of Silver Age DC Comics anthologies, but The Brave and the Bold may have an even greater legacy. Sure, the former introduced some of the most important Silver Age heroes, including Barry Allen as the Flash and Hal Jordan as Green Lantern. But The Brave and the Bold changed comics forever with the introduction of the Justice League of America in its 28th issue. Not only did the Jla become DC’s premier superhero team but its success prompted Atlas Comics publisher Martin Goodman to tell his editor Stan Lee to give superheroes a shot, leading to the creation of the Fantastic Four and the Marvel Universe.
So it’s no small thing that DC Comics plans to bring The Brave and the Bold back as part of its Dawn of DC storytelling initiative next year. Spinning out...

Welcome to the latest installment of our 100 Word Hits column, in association with comics retailer The Unreality Store, in which Matthew De Monti brings us short, sharp reviews of the latest books to hit comic stores over the past month or so!
Damn Them All #1 Written by Si Spurrier | Art by Charlie Adlard
The UK’s greatest occultist since Aleister Crowley, Alfie Hawthorne is dead. Luckily he passed his occult knowledge on to his niece Ellie. Which is just as well as there’s a gang war about to break out in London and 72 demons from the underworld are going to be in thick in the mix.
There’s shades of Hellblazer and a touch of Lock Stock & Two Smoking Barrels which makes this an utterly great read. If you had to choose a horror title for Adlard to follow up his epic work on The Walking Dead, this would definitely be it.

Alien Vol.2 #1 Written by Phillip Kennedy Johnson | Art by Julius Ohta
The second volume of Kennedy Johnson’s Alien epic begins in typically brutal fashion with the aliens ripping through the population of Tobler-9, a showcase planet belonging to the Weyland-Yutani Corporation. Yes, those guys again! Cut to Europa-5 and there’s a group of androids living out an idyllic existence that’s about to be shattered by the United System army. Turns out the U.S needs their help to get something off Tobler-9. Some kind of alien egg…
A great opener setting up this new story arc and what a beauty of a cover by Bjorn Barends!

Finding themselves at the mercy of Black Krrsantan, Han and Chewie are sort of ‘rescued’ by Khel Tanna and her gang who are also after the urn and are press ganged into working for her. Greedo also makes a welcome return for some great banter with Solo as does Benelex Marshal Vancto
There’s lots of action, double-crossing, a daring rescue attempt on the con-man masquerading as Solo’s father and a cliff-hanger of an ending (no spoilers here!) It’s a hugely entertaining read but my only gripe is that David Messina’s art looks a...

The Silver Coin #11 Written by James Tynion IV | Art by Michael Walsh
You know that you’re in for a shocker when the cover is a chef butchering someone’s arm!
Jean works a diner that’s steadily been losing custom since Wamburger opened. Receiving an odd looking coin as a tip she kisses the coin and wishes for a diner full of hungry people. Next morning there’s a queue of starving people who want to be fed. And fed. And fed. They will stop at nothing to feed their hunger and as Jean realises the folly of her wish she looks like she’s next on the menu…...

I must be on something of a subconscious James Bond kick at the moment. I’ve just finished re-watching the Daniel Craig Bond films, and then this book caught my eye. Dynamite’s had the rights to do James Bond for a while now, and in general they’ve been doing a decent job. They’ve certainly attracted some great writers along the way, names like Warren Ellis, Christos Gage, and Greg Pak have all graced the pages of 007’s adventures. This time it’s the turn of Phillip Kennedy Johnson, no slouch himself. Eisner-nominated, he has worked for Marvel and DC for small books like Avengers and Superman. I’m expecting good things.
Let’s take a look.

I had an argument not long ago with a friend of mine who tried to persuade me that there were simply no new stories about Superman left to tell. I’m a huge Superman fan of course, and I had to defend The Man of Steel. I argued back, explaining that I thought the exact opposite. The sign of a strong character is one who can adapt to the times, one that can work as well in 2022 as he did in 1938, and Superman is most definitely that. Good characters generate good stories, always. Yes, a lot of stories have been written about Superman down the years, thousands I would wager, but I had great belief in the creators on this book, that they would write ‘their’ Superman, and show that there are many more stories to come.

I’ve written in a few previous reviews about my, at best, ambivalence about Venom as a character. I’ve never really took to him. I say that as someone who bought the alien symbiote costume’s first appearance from my local newsagent back in the day, who bought Venom’s first actual appearance, and even several of his mini-series. Still have them all too. My problem, I think, is that I still associate Venom with that whole overblown 90’s era. Big guns, gratuitous violence, and books that had ‘in your face’ art but little story behind them. Venom was one of the big Marvel characters front and centre during all this, and a poster boy for the excess of it all. He wasn’t alone of course, Ghost Rider, Wolverine, The Punisher, any...

Admittedly it doesn’t take much prompting for me to pick up a Superman book, but one look at the great cover on this book, and a heads up this was the start of a major new arc, and I was most definitely in. That’s not to say, though, that I’ve been happy to pick up all things Super of late. Ever since the New 52 misfire, I’ve found the Superman books to be very hit and miss, and certainly not a patch on the books from the 1980’s and 1990’s. It does seem quite often that new writers no longer embrace the qualities and sensibilities that made Superman such a great character down the years, and impose on him whatever makes their stories work.
So, let’s see if Phillip Kennedy Johnson’s new story arc ‘gets’ him.

For a franchise that leans heavily on its anti-corporate tone and history, there is a certain irony on Alien now being controlled by Disney. Disney of course bought 20th Century Fox, who own the Alien franchise, and it probably didn’t take an entire room of marketing executives to decide that Marvel, essentially Disney property’s marketing arm now, should maximise cross-stream revenue. Or give the fans new stories because that’s what they’ve been clamouring for. I’m messing about of course, cynic that I am, but the truth is probably somewhere in the middle. Alien, comic book wise, has long been licensed and published by Dark Horse Comics, and they did a fantastic job down the decades, so Marvel have a lot to live up to with this.
Let’s take a look.

I’ve been dipping into these Dark Multiverse books and crossovers for a while now, and as you would expect they have been of mixed quality. Generally, though, they’ve hit more home runs than strikes. The positive thing is that as they are essentially glorified ‘What If?’ books, and the possibilities are endless. Any creator can take a major storyline from the past in the DC Universe that they enjoyed, or more likely have an editor assign it to them, and run with it in a different direction. Heck, I could write those. This time round, Phillip Kennedy Johnson gets that job, with co-conspirator Dexter Soy having fun on the art. Let’s take a look.
So, first things first, this is a dark take on the Hush storyline that ran back in the Batman books nearly twenty years ago now.

The Eisner-bait comic, Strange Adventures, gets a new DC label to match its content.
Strange Adventures, the comic so hotly anticipated that DC is already making a show about it before it comes out, is in for some changes. The book, written by Tom King, with art from Mitch Gerads and Doc Shaner and letters from Clayton Cowles, is being upgraded from a regular DC comic to the company's prestige mature readers format, Black Label.
"As Strange Adventures was coming together, we had to take a step back and look at what made the most sense for the project," said the project's editor, Jamie S. Rich. "Since its tone and themes are more in the vein of Mister Miracle than, say, Tom King’s work on Batman, we decided that it made more sense to give Strange Adventures its own space, where Tom, Mitch, Doc, and Clayton...

Peter Dinklage is going to have a lot more free time on his hands to do stuff with Game of Thrones coming to an end. He just signed on to star in a new post-apocalyptic film called Last Sons of America for Netflix and Matt Reeves (Cloverfield, The Batman) is set to produce the new film.
The movie will be an adaptation of the graphic novel of the same name that comes from writer Phillip Kennedy Johnson and illustrator Matthew Dow Smith. Here’s the description of the graphic novel:
