The Pasifika Entertainment Advancement Komiti (Peak) announced their Peak Conversations panel, sponsored by Amazon MGM Studios, will take place in Los Angeles on May 1.
The first celebration of Pasifika women in Hollywood will feature and highlight the achievements Moana and Mean Girls actress Auli’i Cravalho, RuPaul’s Drag Race winner Sasha Colby, and Great Scott Productions founder Naomi Scott with moderation by Moana 2, and Thai Cave Rescue screenwriter Dana Ledoux Miller. The talanoa (or discussion) will focus on issues specific to Pasifika women and their journeys in the entertainment industry.
“May is Aapi Heritage Month yet you’ll find Pasifika (or Pacific Islander) people are rarely prioritized and often erased in celebrations despite us being named in them. Most Aapi organizations have no Pasifika staff or even board members so it’s why Peak exists. We’re the only Pasifika-led organization doing this work who will advocate for us the way we do.

White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre has been set to receive Outfest’s inaugural Achievement Award for Press and Media, the L.A.-based nonprofit’s highest honor, celebrating representation of the LGBTQ+ community in the media.
While she’ll be officially recognized with the honor during the Closing Night of the 41st Outfest Los Angeles Summer Festival this Sunday, July 23rd, a source close to Jean-Pierre clarifies that she will not be present in person at the ceremony amidst the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes. She’ll instead have a statement read at the event, underlining her belief in the importance of fair pay and benefits for these creatives.
The news comes shortly after the announcement that Jean-Pierre’s fellow Outfest honorees Melissa McCarthy and Ben Falcone have backed out of attending the festival to pick up their James Schamus Ally Award, recognizing their support and advocacy for the Lgbtqia+ community,...

During a panel on the future of Pasifika storytelling held in downtown Los Angeles Thursday evening by the Pasifika Entertainment Advancement Komiti, Peak co-founder and executive director Kristian Fanene Schmidt proposed a question to the participants: Should the AA be separated from the Pi in Aapi? The answer regarding Asian American and Pacific Islander representation in Hollywood is as complicated as the enduring fight for greater pan-Pacific presence onscreen, the panelists noted, though the undercurrent of the hesitant responses was indeed “yes.”
“Last night at the Writer’s Guild meeting there was an Asian writer who walked up on the question side and said, ‘I’m Asian, I’m an Asian American writer, and it’s Asian American month, and I screamed out, ‘What about the PIs?’” recalled Freddie Gutierrez, a writer for Nickelodeon’s That Girl Lay Lay, who hails from Guam. “She looked and she just kept on going.
