Doc NYC gave a boost to 15 Oscar-contending documentaries Tuesday, naming them to its prestigious shortlist of the year’s best nonfiction films.
Early favorites Flee, Summer of Soul, The Rescue, Ascension, and Becoming Cousteau made the Doc NYC shortlist, as did Introducing, Selma Blair, the intimate documentary about actress Selma Blair’s battle with Ms, and The Velvet Underground, Todd Haynes’ film on the influential avant-garde rock band fronted by Lou Reed.
Doc NYC has earned a reputation as an accurate predictor of Oscar success. Last year, the festival gave shortlist recognition to three of the docs that went on to claim Oscar nominations: Time, Collective, and Crip Camp.
“For eight of the last nine years, Doc NYC has screened the documentary feature that went on to win the Academy Award,” the festival noted. “The festival has also screened 39 of the last 45 Oscar-nominated documentary features.

Moments ago, the Film Independent Spirit Award nominations for 2019 were announced. Though pulling from a very different crop than the Academy Awards do, the Spirit Awards do have some cross over each year. While success here assures a title of little, making moves with this group never hurts while wooing the Academy. Today, we saw several Oscar hopefuls try and score some love, while a few received damaging snubs. Mostly, though, the status quo remains, as movies jockey for position heading into the holiday season. Go figure, this isn’t going to be an easy year to predict. Leading the way were The Lighthouse and Uncut Gems, each with five nominations apiece. The former from Robert Eggers definitely over performed, relative to expectations here, while the latter from the Safdie Brothers solidified its status as a player on the indie precursor stage. More likely Oscar fare such as Clemency, The Farewell,...

Redd Kross are one of the longest-running bands Los Angeles has spawned in its history, with a career that launched in the city’s late 1970s punk scene, carried into the power-pop era of the 1980s, then into the alt-rock boom of the ‘90s and straight into the present — the band released a new album just last month.
While Redd Kross never quite broke through — make that haven’t yet broken through — in as big a way as many thought they deserved, the band has a formidable discography, they’ve always put on enormously entertaining live shows, and the brothers are some of the funniest, most gossip-spewing interviewees one could ever hope for. The 2019 Sundance Film Festival has unveiled their impressive lineup of independent films.
I love going to Sundance. It’s one of my favorite movie events to attend. One of the reasons I enjoy it so much is because they are all fresh and original films that tell original stories! For the most part there aren’t a lot of remakes, reboots, and sequels, which are mostly the kinds of films that fill theaters these days.
On top of that, you never know what you’re going to get when you walk into a screening. It could be complete and utter crap, or it could be one of the best films you’ve ever seen. It’s thrilling!

Usually a backdrop for ski/snowboarding, Park City and the fest could serve as an ideal venue to showcase Lucy Walker’s latest untitled film, a docu on Kevin Pearce and his horrible injury/accident which will show in an uncompleted form at the Idfa this year. Walker has so far brought 2002′s Devil’s Playground, 2010′s Waste Land and Countdown to Zero and last year’s Jury Prize Short, The Tsunami and the Cherry Blossom to the fest. Also on slate for Walker are shorts films Crooked Lines and Secrets of the Mongolian Archers.
Gist: The dramatic story of one unforgettable character, Kevin Pearce. One eye-popping sport, snowboarding. And one explosive issue, Traumatic Brain Injury.
Production Co./Producers: Tree Tree Tree’s Lucy Walker and Julian Cautherley for Kevin Rides Again, LLC,
Prediction: U.S. Documentary Competition
