We might finally see some light returning to the specialty box office this Memorial Day weekend.
Bố Già (Dad, I’m Sorry) is a comedy-family drama directed by comedian and Vietnam television host Trấn Thành and Vũ Ngọc Đãng. The movie is an adaptation of a hit web drama that was originally released on YouTube, where it garnered more than 90 million views for its five-episode run.
The film follows the story of Sang, an old motorbike taxi driver from a low-class neighborhood in downtown Saigon, as he struggles to make ends meet for his family.
It was planned to hit domestic screens during the Lunar New Year holidays but was postponed by Covid-19 until this weekend.
Estimates have Bố Già earning between $350-380 thousand dollars on 20 screens, give or take. If the Galaxy Studio-distributed film closes out strong this 4-day weekend, the Vietnamese-language comedy-drama will average $15-20K per screen.

Photo: 'American Traitor: The Trial of Axis Sally'/Vertical Entertainment Michael Polish attempts to bring awareness to Mildred Gillars in 'American Traitor: The Trial of Axis Sally.' The film tells the true story of Mildred Gillars, an American woman who lived in Germany and was hired as a host for a popular radio broadcast that perpetuated Nazi propaganda to fans around the world. It is based on a book of the same name by William E. Owens. The character that Mildred Gillars would play on this radio show, Axis Sally, would attempt to demoralize, devalue, and cripple American soldiers' war efforts against Nazis during World War 2. It’s not a critic’s place to say (or to know) if “American Traitor: The Trial of Axis Sally” only exists because producer and star Meadow Williams — eager to jumpstart an unremarkable career that might have reached its high point with a small part in the Mel Gibson Hulu movie “Boss Level” — used some of the $800 million fortune she controversially inherited from her much older and very dead vitamin tycoon husband to buy herself a starring role in a biopic so chintzy that it seems like even Al “I’ll do literally anything as long as my hair gets to look like a dead bird” Pacino had to get Bowfingered into being in it.
All a critic can say is that no other explanation would seem to account for the unnatural lifelessness of this film about the first woman ever convicted for treason against the United States. No other...

In 1981’s “Lili Marleen,” directed by German provocateur R.W. Fassbinder, the titular song is repeatedly played to an imprisoned man in an effort to break his spirit. In “American Traitor: The Trial of Axis Sally,” it takes only one rendition to have much the same effect on the viewer, though that may be because by the time Mildred Gillars (Meadow Williams) performs it at some Nazi Party party, we’ve already had an hour of this utterly absurd movie, and are ready to crack.
Clumsy, campy and kitsch, but also deadeningly dull for long stretches, “American Traitor” is directed by Michael Polish (“The Astronaut Farmer”) and based on the true story of radio star Gillars, aka Axis Sally, an American wannabe actress who found notoriety as the English-language voice of the Third Reich’s propaganda machine. But the film swings very wide of recorded history, especially in terms of...

Movie History 101 will soon be in the Summer Session at the local multiplex (or for those still “in-home learning” streaming online). And just where does the course, begin? What better backdrop than the last World War, number II if you’re taking notes. However, this week’s lesson plan, feature film actually, doesn’t concern any major battles, or big military milestones. This is a story about the use of propaganda, though its use goes back far before the printed word. But in WWII, this weapon of persuasion hit the airwaves, the radio airwaves to be precise. Last year, Da 5 Bloods included flashbacks to the broadcasts of Hanoi Hannah, a sultry voice that was usually laughed off by the GIs. Twenty or so years before her, there was Tokyo Rose, going out through WWII’s war in the Pacific. Less well known was the siren of the war in Europe,...

"I did what I could to survive..." Vertical Entertainment has released the official trailer for a legal drama called American Traitor: The Trial of Axis Sally, the latest from director Michael Polish. An American woman named Mildred Gillars, played in this by Meadow Williams, broadcast Nazi propaganda during World War II. She was dubbed "Axis Sally" by the American GIs who simultaneously loved and hated her because of her voice. The story plunges viewers into the very dark underbelly of the Third Reich's hate-filled propaganda machine, Sally's eventual capture, and the subsequent trial for treason in Washington D.C. after the war. The main cast also includes Al Pacino as lawyer James Laughlin, Thomas Kretschmann, Mitch Pileggi, Lala Kent, and Carsten Norgaard. This seems like a fascinating story to tell, but doesn't look like a very interesting film. Official trailer for Michael Polish's American Traitor: The Trial of Axis Sally,...
