This year the Grammys moved the Songwriter of the Year and Producer of the Year, Non-Classical categories into the general field. The way voting works, academy members are only allowed to vote in three fields besides general, and can only vote in 10 categories between those three fields. Songwriter of the Year was its own field when that award was introduced last year, and most members probably didn’t want to burn one of their three fields to vote for just one award. Now all voters can participate in these contests, hopefully generating a more representative list of who excelled behind the scenes. This year in particular has a diverse and exciting list of possible contenders in both categories, so let’s consider who might make the cut in the songwriting race.

For a show that doesn’t look like anything else on TV, “Euphoria” still has a solid foundation. Through the eyes of one main character, the viewer gets to see a group of high school students dealing with all the challenges of modern teenage life.
It would make sense for the music of “Euphoria” to draw solely on what its characters would stream. Make a separate playlist for each student and pick from a giant soup of songs as each party or late-night battle with anxiety demands.
Instead, the music of “Euphoria” built its own cultural cachet largely because of the organic way it weaves through the series. Its songs draw from different eras and styles. The score introduces some playfulness and bounce amidst an encroaching uncertainty.
For music supervisor Jen Malone, searching for songs that would be a good fit for “Euphoria” wasn’t a regimented process. It came...

The HBO series “Insecure” excels at bringing seismic breakups to the screen, but season four’s Issa-Molly rancor took things to “the next level,” says music supervisor Kier Lehman, reflecting on the past 10 episodes. “I was like, ‘Okay, another season, how are they going to develop these storylines and keep it interesting,’ ” he recalls. “And as I started reading the scripts, I could see they were expanding the storylines and the emotions that we touched on in these stories, getting deeper into these characters.”
The same could be said of Lehman’s contributions to the most recent season. Among his creative strokes: mixing Latin music with the established sound of the show, which included producing an original tune in Spanish unofficially titled “the Mexican Thanksgiving song.” Even more ambitious: he planned Inglewood’s answer to Coachella: Issa’s block party. Inspired by Issa’s disastrous girls’ trip to Beychella last...
