- He succeeded Graham Taylor as the manager of the England men's national football team in 1994 but stayed in charge for just one tournament, Euro '96. He announced he was standing down after the tournament before it began due to imminent legal wrangles relating to his business interests. Doubts over his probity had actually seen him overlooked for the job when Taylor had been appointed in 1990. Nevertheless, during his short stint in the England job, former player Gary Lineker said that Venables had raised the England team "from the depths to one of the best in the world again".
- "P B Yuill" is not a real person. It is a pseudonym for the combined writing talents of Terry Venables and Gordon Williams, used in the credits of Hazell (1978).
- He coached FC Barcelona to a European Cup final in the 1980s, but his team lost on penalties. As coach of England, his team progressed to the semi-finals of the 1996 European Championship, but lost on penalties to the Germans.
