There’s a scene midway through Safe House, the 2012 thriller which stars Denzel Washington and Ryan Reynolds, that hits entirely differently in 2021. As with any number of films starring these leading men, the stars are cultivating an oil and water relationship in the sequence, one built on mutual distrust and loathing as they drive across a countryside. But in the case of Reynolds, it plays differently than how modern audiences likely expect. When Washington begins trying to get under the younger guy’s skin—poking at his insecurities like he’s Ethan Hawke in Training Day or pretty much the entire cast of Man on Fire—Reynolds is visibly shaken. He then folds like a cheap suit.
“Go ahead, you’re not going to get in my head,” Reynolds’ Matt Weston protests as he seemingly holds power over Washington’s Frost character. “I’m already in your head,” Washington smiles back.

Ryan Reynolds, Samuel L. Jackson and Salma Hayek reunite with director Patrick Hughes for a sequel to 2017’s disappointing action caper The Hitman’s Bodyguard. Unfortunately, the best you can say about it is that it’s marginally better than the first film.
Reynolds plays former triple-a rated bodyguard Michael Bryce, who’s had his license taken away because of his multiple failings, several of them the direct result of his association with hitman Darius Kincaid (Samuel L. Jackson). When his exasperated therapist (a wasted Rebecca Front) recommends a vacation, Bryce heads to picturesque Capri, but he’s barely there five minutes before Darius’ fiery-tempered wife Sonia (Hayek) plunges him into the centre of a gunfight and recruits him into...

It is safe to say that if you enjoyed the action-comedy The Hitman’s Bodyguard in 2017, then you may find some entertainment value in the sequel The Hitman’s Wife’s Bodyguard, which is now available on Blu-ray, DVD, and 4K. Those unfamiliar with the franchise may feel more lukewarm toward the new chapter.
The film is ostensibly the story of down on his luck bodyguard named Michael Bryce (Ryan Reynolds) and his relationship with hitman Darius Kincaid (Samuel L. Jackson). Having been stripped of his bodyguarding license, Bryce is out of work and desperate when Kincaid’s wife, Sonia (Salma Hayek) approaches him to help rescue Darius from the clutches of madman Aristotle Papadopolous (Antonio Banderas), who is attempting to wreak havoc across all of Europe for some reason or another.
Unfortunately, there is very little that works in this film. Even the likability of the three stars is repeatedly put to...

The first movie, The Hitman’S Bodyguard (2017), without “wife’s” in the title, was a delightful buddy action comedy. The drop-off of this sequel is monstrously precipitous, making it a huge disappointment-in-waiting for fans of the progenitor. How can a cast of Ryan Reynolds, Samuel L. Jackson, Salma Hayek, Antonio Banderas, Gary Oldman and Morgan – freakin’ – Freeman go so wrong? It appears that so much was spent on the stars, and a slew of lovely European locations, that there was nothing left for the screenplay or editing. It winds up a hyperbolic mess with only occasional laughs to reward the viewer.

Maybe you remember The Hitman’s Bodyguard. Maybe you don’t. We wouldn’t blame you if the details regarding this pulpy 2017 buddy comedy had faded from your memory banks like so much post-headshot pink mist. Ryan Reynolds is a disgraced bodyguard. Samuel L. Jackson is a hitman who’s supposed to testify at the Hague in a war-crimes trial. The two end up bickering a lot and saving each other’s lives, things get blowed up real good, Jackson says “motherfucker” a lot, yadda yadda yadda. As a bonus,...

The first Hitman’s Bodyguard is nobody’s idea of a great movie, but under the right set of circumstances it could be the source of a great time. I encountered the optimal such factors when I watched it with some tipsy friends whose idea of a movie night usually features beer and pizza. While that 2017 film was rote and overly familiar, the affable chemistry between Samuel L. Jackson and Ryan Reynolds and some excellent stunt work, went a long way.
I wish I could report that The Hitman’s Wife’s Bodyguard achieves similar lowbrow charm, particularly for audiences starved for any kind of breezy summer spectacle this week. Sadly, though, it really doesn’t matter if you come to this actioner in theaters or at home, sober or three sheets to the wind. The best circumstance by which to approach this is not at all.
That disappointment is all the more...

Reynolds returns as bodyguard Michael Bryce, with Samuel L Jackson as an assassin, Salma Hayek as his badass wife and Antonio Banderas as a Greek supervillain. Please stop
Here’s the tiresome follow-up to the tiresome action comedy with the tiresomely (and unfunnily) muddled premise: bodyguards generally protect people against hitmen and hitmen generally don’t need bodyguards as they’re not publicly visible … but that wasn’t the point. Anyway, here’s the sequel with the extra-clumsy double-possessive in the title.
Ryan Reynolds is back as Michael Bryce, the former triple-a rated bodyguard, now haunted and traumatised by his professional failures, and by his association with the notorious assassin Darius Kincaid, played by Samuel L Jackson. Michael is stripped of his “licence” to practise bodyguarding and is now in therapy; but just as he decides to take a restorative European break by the pool, Michael gets sucked right back...

In “The Hitman’s Wife’s Bodyguard” (I think that’s the whole title — good thing the bodyguard didn’t have a dog), the gunshots are so loud they sound like they’re hitting a metal canister you’re trapped inside. Many of those shots are aimed right — splat! — at the head: This is an action comedy in which people get killed like flies, often with their brains splattered. At one point a truck blows up as it makes its way over a giant bridge, and for good measure the bridge blows up too. The film seems to be saying, “Why not?” To describe the rollicking mayhem of “The Hitman’s Wife’s Bodyguard” as over-the-top would be an insult to the concept of having a top.

The only real upside to “The Hitman’s Bodyguard” — a low-stakes action comedy from the dog days of the 2017 summer movie season that’s better remembered for grossing $176 million off a $69 million budget than it is for anything else — is that it was an “original” film. It may have been a thoroughly mediocre outing, but it was one dropped into a multiplex world so clogged with superhero blockbusters and other well-established IP (“Baywatch” mania was sweeping the nation!) that any fresh offerings seemed to float up to the surface by dint of their novelty alone.
Needless to say, “Hitman’s Wife’s Bodyguard” doesn’t have the same advantage. But , twice the possessive apostrophes, and a picaresque approach to comic violence that veers closer to the likes of “Lupin the Third” than it does to the weighty event films that people have to come expect this time of year. Welcome to the latest TV and movie trope: therapists telling professional killers not to kill anymore. It happened in “The Falcon and the Winter Soldier,” and now, it’s happening to Ryan Reynolds in “The Hitman’s Wife’s Bodyguard” — although technically, he’s being told not to bodyguard anymore.
Reynolds returns as Michael Bryce in the sequel to “The Hitman’s Bodyguard,” apparently trying to put his old life behind him. It’s not exactly going well, as he finds himself tangled up once more with Darius Kincaid (Samuel L. Jackson), having been hired to protect Darius’s wife, Sonia (Salma Hayek).
Life as a bodyguard is hard at the best of times, but lest we forget, Bryce is still unlicensed. So not only is he dealing with that, but then comes the pressure of finding out that Darius and Sonia are trying to have a baby. Oh, and also,

Photo: 'Deadpool'/20th Century Fox Ryan Reynolds is one of the biggest actors in Hollywood today. His performance as the Merc with a Mouth has launched Ryan Reynolds into the realm of comedy Titans, but he is a jack of all trades. He has shone in drama, horror, and action flicks throughout his career although he mostly focuses on comedy nowadays because let’s face it, d**k jokes are fun. Reynolds tends to be a stand out in every movie he’s in because of his charisma, wit, and in the case of Deadpool, skin-tight red bodysuit. Samuel L. Jackson and Ryan Reynolds just can’t get enough of working together. ‘The Hitman’s Bodyguard’ pair are set to reunite for Quibi animated series ‘Futha Mucka’.
The series will see Jackson play Reynold’s primary caregiver. The synopsis that Quibi provided for the series reads Samuel L. Jackson and Ryan Reynolds love each other. More accurately, Ryan loves Sam. When asked for comment on his feelings for Ryan, Sam said: “tell them I couldn’t be reached for comment.” When a minor mishap causes Sam to become Ryan’s primary caregiver, sh*t gets weird. Ryan is delighted to spend all of his time with Sam. Sam couldn’t be reached for comment.
The series is created by ‘Blockers’ writers Jim and Brian Kehoe, who will serve as showrunners and executive producers alongside Reynolds and Jackson. It is being produced by Anonymous Content and Maximum Effort with Titmouse serving as the animation studio.

The duo, who of course teamed up for “The Hitman’s Bodyguard,” are set to star in an animated series at Quibi with a title that seems tailor-made for Jackson’s famously expletive-laden vocabulary.
