If you're Dominican, chances are you're familiar with morir soñando, a simple but refreshingly crisp batida (milkshake) made with milk, orange juice, and vanilla extract. As simple as the three-ingredient drink seems, there's a reason it's given such a poetic name. "Morir soñando" translates as "to die dreaming," and after just one sip, one instantly feels like they've been transported into a dream - even if just for a matter of seconds. That was exactly the feeling Dominican American comedians and real-life besties Sasha Merci and Glorelys Mora, who both grew up in uptown (Merci specfically in the Bronx), wanted audiences to feel when they created their first all-Dominican comedy show back in 2019. On Monday, Nov. 6, the Morir Soñando show took over the historic United Palace, formerly Loew's 175th Street Theatre, in Washington Heights. It was the first show in the New York Comedy Festival to include an all-Dominican lineup,...

Hannah Berner grew up dreaming of being a professional tennis player before becoming a viral sensation with comedy bits like “Han on the Street.” Nimesh Patel turned his experience with being diagnosed with testicular cancer into a heralded comedy special, “Lucky Lefty.” And Kurtis Conner was working at Starbucks when a frequent customer encouraged him to get into comedy.
These were among the hilarious, surprising and touching revelations that emerged when Variety’s 10 Comics to Watch for 2023 were celebrated with a panel discussion and cocktail reception sponsored by Cohen Gardner Llp at last week’s Just for Laughs Montreal Comedy Festival. The comedians also performed in a packed showcase at the festival. Variety has been presenting the 10 Comics at Just for Laughs since 2000 and over the years the list has included such luminaries as Tiffany Haddish, Kumail Nanjiani, Patton Oswalt, Taylor Tomlinson and Quinta Brunson.

On Jan. 11, Shakira dropped a juicy breakup track with Argentine producer Bizarrap titled "Bzrp Music Session #53," and it has since gone viral. The song serves as a diss track about the Colombian singer's ex, Spanish soccer player Gerard Piqué, and his alleged cheating. The song racked up more than 63 million YouTube views in the 24 hours since it dropped last week, becoming the most-watched Latin debut song in YouTube history. The record-breaking doesn't stop there. It also skyrocketed to the top of Spotify's Top 50 Global chart, breaking the record of the most-streamed Latin track in a single day in Spotify history.
This is major, people. Is the secret sauce behind its success the fact that it's a track putting a cheater on blast? Or is it because the song is much more about empowerment than it is about heartbreak?
I think its forcefulness comes from the latter.

We've all probably heard the saying "growth and comfort can't ride the same horse." And in the comedy world, there are way too many OGs who refuse to evolve - we all know who they are. The truth is, what we find funny does change over the years - like it or not - because we are always evolving as a society. Good comedy is able to take a clever stab at something very relevant. That's no easy task in today's cultural climate, and yet rising comedy star Ian Lara has managed to strike the right chord when it comes to mastering it.
In Lara's HBO Max special, "Romantic Comedy" (directed by fellow comedian Aida Rodriguez), released on Nov. 11, the 32-year-old beautifully finesses the perfect balance of poking fun at modern dating - never getting cringy about it - and sexual politics. His perfect comedic timing, storytelling specificity, and ability...

Since a certain show about houses and dragons just wrapped, HBO Max has a big scheduling hole fill next month. How will they go about it? Let’s find out with the streamer’s list of new releases for November 2022!
Obviously, there is no replacing House of the Dragon‘s cultural impact so HBO is looking for some singles in November, rather than the homerun. Things get started on in promising fashion on Nov. 3. That date sees the premiere of Titans season 4 and the interesting true crime documentary Low Country: The Murdaugh Dynasty. The former will continue the adventures of DC’s heralded Titans team (and introduce some new heavy hitters) while the latter will try to keep pace with Netflix’s prolific true crime output.
November is also when HBO Max gets a head start on the holiday season. A Christmas Story sequel, aptly titled A Christmas Story Christmas,...

Comedian Aida Rodriguez is stepping behind the camera to direct two installments of the comedy special series “Entre Nos” for HBO Max, Variety has learned exclusively.
Rodriguez will direct a standalone special featuring comedian Ian Lara as well as a special featuring both Ralph Barbosa and Gwen La Roka. Barbosa and La Roka are the two winners of the HBO & Nylff Latino Stand-Up Comedy Competition. The two specials will be Rodriguez’s directing debut.
Directing both specials represents a homecoming of sorts for Rodriguez. She previously appeared in an earlier edition of “Entre Nos” in 2018. HBO Max is also currently streaming Rodriguez’s stand up special “Fighting Words,” which was released in 2021. Topics in the special included being worn out by political comedy as well as her attempts to get back into dating.
