Berlin, Aug 31 (Ians) Discovering the talent of Erling Haaland might elevate someone to heroic status in football. For Christoph Freund, the discovery of the Norwegian standout isn’t the only reason Bayern Munich took notice.
In eight years, Freund transformed Rb Salzburg into one of Europe’s prime talent factories. He’s credited with finding stars like Sadio Mane from Senegal, former Liverpool striker Naby Keita, Japanese International Takumi Minamino, and French international Dayot Upamecano, reports Xinhua.
Starting this Friday, the 46-year-old will step into his new role as Bayern Munich’s sporting director, succeeding the departed Hasan Salihamidzic. He has inked a deal that lasts until 2027.
Freund’s arrival fills a significant gap for Bayern. The team hasn’t seen a homegrown talent rise to its first team since Bavarian favorite Thomas Muller in 2009.
While there’s no guarantee Freund will uncover another Haaland, the bar is set high.

Berlin, June 9 (Ians) Central midfielder Naby Keita returns to the Bundesliga on a free transfer after signing an undisclosed contract with Werder Bremen, the Green-Whites confirmed on Friday.
“It’s clear that when a player like Naby Keita is on the market on a free transfer, there are plenty of prospects. That’s why we’re very happy that Naby chose us despite several offers. With his qualities, he will be a great asset to the team,” said Clemens Fritz, head of Bremen’s scouting department.
Bremen’s new arrival knows the Bundesliga very well as he had played for Rb Leipzig between 2016 and 2018, scoring 17 goals in an overall 71 competitive outings. Since his transfer in 2018, Keita has won all major titles with Liverpool, including the Premier League, Fa Cup and the UEFA Champions League, a Xinhua report said.
“I am really looking forward to my new task in Bremen,” said the Guinea international.

Madrid, March 15 (Ians) Liverpool coach Jurgen Klopp said his side have just a ‘one percent’ chance of reaching the UEFA Champions League quarter finals, but insisted they would give everything to cause an upset against Real Madrid on Wednesday.
Liverpool travel to Madrid needing to make up for their 5-2 defeat in the first leg at Anfield. Speaking in his pre-game press conference, Klopp admitted that “nobody believes” in his side’s chance of overcoming the deficit, but added that “after Anfield I said that Madrid was going to be in the quarterfinals and now I think we have to play. Even if there is only a one percent option, I would like to try.”
“It will be unlikely, but at the same time possible. If we are capable of being negatively surprised by horrible nights, we should also be able to do it positively by some spectacular ones,” said the Liverpool coach.

Madrid, March 14 (Ians) Real Madrid entertain Liverpool in the Santiago Bernabeu Stadium on Wednesday in the second leg of their Champions League last-16 tie.
The reigning title holders are clear favorites to progress against the side they beat in last season’s final after a 5-2 win in Liverpool three weeks ago, where they picked holes in a fragile Liverpool midfield and defense.
Liverpool have shown some signs of recovery since then, with a 7-0 thrashing of an in-form Manchester United, but Jurgen Klopp’s side was brought crashing back to earth again at the weekend when they lost 1-0 to Bournemouth, who had started that game bottom of the Premier League.
Real Madrid ended an indifferent run of form, which saw them lose to Barcelona in the Copa del Rey and draw with Atletico Madrid and Betis, with a comfortable 3-1 victory over Espanyol on Saturday, a Xinhua report said.

London, Aug 19 (Ians) Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp admits Darwin Nunez will have plenty of time to learn from his red card for headbutting Crystal Palace defender Joachim Andersen in the 1-1 Premier League draw at Anfield.
The Uruguay international, who arrived in the summer, was dismissed early in the second half for flooring the Eagles centre-back after the two had tangled with each other during the match.
“Provocation and definitely wrong reaction, he will learn from that. I came in and wanted to see the situation — in the game, I could not see anything so I could know what happened: I saw Andersen on the floor and Darwin walking away,” Klopp said.
“Then I saw it — yes it is a red card. Wrong reaction in the situation. Andersen wanted that, he got it but he (Nunez) made a mistake.”
Klopp pointed to the provocation the striker had received but accepted...

London, Aug 12 (Ians) Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp is adamant he can solve his midfield issues from within his squad and will not be resorting to the transfer market.
A hamstring injury to key man Thiago Alcantara in last week’s opening match at Fulham could sideline the Spain international for up to six weeks, adding him to a list which also includes Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Curtis Jones.
But Klopp insists they have explored all their viable transfer opportunities and he will not sign a player just for the sake of bumping up their numbers.
“Thiago is good but the injury is not good. I read four to six weeks, I would prefer four,” Klopp said.
“I am happy with the strength, size and quality of my squad. We have injuries, that’s how it is. Now it is the question how long the players will be out and the different solutions for it.
