Just exactly how did NPR think they would be able to fit Big Sean behind their Tiny Desk? Don’t they know that this is the “I Don’t Fuck With You” guy? If that Desk is too Tiny, Big Sean will tell you. Plus, his name sorta suggests catastrophe with the whole setup.
Fortuitously, not only did Big Sean fit, but he brought an even bigger band, a DJ, a vocal quartet, and a string quartet. Plus, he and his retinue performed what even NPR acknowledges is “one of...

When Atlanta trap maven Future first linked up with producer Metro Boomin a decade ago, Metro’s inventive, textured beats offered the Mc an avenue to explore darker, more adventurous sounds. On We Don’t Trust You, though, Future seems content to be set dressing for Metro’s elaborate production. At one point on their first collaborative album, he raps, “I’m over this shit 1000%,” and you believe him. With few exceptions, Future sounds like he’s going through the motions.
Recounting the hedonistic pleasures of wealth in a hollowed, tortured way used to be just one move in Future’s arsenal, but now it’s seemingly his whole shtick. Metro’s work is sometimes enough to carry a track like “Everyday Hustle,” which molds a pitched-up soul sample to both Future’s clipped delivery and the track’s percussion, reminiscent of J Dilla. And Metro achieves a tonal mutability on “Slimed In,...

Idles are gearing up to release their fifth studio album, Tangk, on February 16th. “Gift Horse” is the album’s third single, and followed the slow jam “Grace” and the LCD Soundsystem-featuring “Dancer.” The band has mapped out a lengthy 2024 tour throughout the US and Europe; get tickets to all US shows via StubHub and all international shows on viagogo.

Amp Fiddler, a keyboardist for George Clinton’s pioneering funk collective Parliament-Funkadelic and mentor to late Detroit producer J Dilla, has died. He was 65 years old.
The funk and soul musician had been recovering from a 2022 surgery for an undisclosed illness. A GoFundMe campaign launched last year raised more than $75,000 for Fiddler’s “continued healing as he journeys back to the stage,” and a benefit concert was held in his hometown of Detroit earlier this month to further cover medical expenses.
“Rest in eternal musical excellence Parliament-Funkadelic keyboardist Joseph Anthony “Amp” Fiddler,” Parliament-Funkadelic wrote on Facebook. “Fly on Amp! We love you dearly!”
Questlove paid tribute to Fiddler on Instagram, writing, “Rest easy brother Amp. For all those talks during the Pfunk tour. For all the music. Especially of course mentoring the one who mentored us (Dilla) — thank you brother.”

Bobby Caldwell, the oft-sampled, blue-eyed soul singer behind the late Seventies smash “What You Won’t Do for Love,” has died at the age of 71.
“Bobby passed away here at home,” Caldwell’s wife Mary tweeted Wednesday. “I held him tight in my arms as he left us. I am forever heartbroken. Thanks to all of you for your many prayers over the years.”
While no cause of death was provided, Caldwell had struggled with health issues over the past six years, which Mary cited as a result of an adverse reaction to fluoroquinolone antibiotic.

Bobby Caldwell, the blue-eyed soul singer best known for his hit single “What You Won’t Do for Love,” has died at the age of 71.
Caldwell’s wife, Mary, confirmed the singer’s death on social media on Wednesday, March 15th. TMZ reports that he had been battling an unspecified illness for several years.
As a teenager, Caldwell moved to Los Angeles to pursue a career in music. He briefly played rhythm guitar for Little Richard, but it took six years for him to catch his big break and land a recording deal with Tk Records. “What You Won’t Do for Love,” appeared on his 1978 self-titled debut album, and hit the top 10 on the Billboard Hot 100. In the ensuing years, the song would be sampled by a number of hip-hop and R&b artists, including Tupac on “Do for Love.”

David Jude Jolicoeur, who passed away on Sunday, Feb. 12 at the age of 54, helped revolutionize hip-hop and change the course of popular music. As one-third of De La Soul, alongside Kelvin “Posdnous” Mercer and DJ Vincent “Maseo” Mason, the Haitian American musician and producer who adopted names like “Jude,” “Trugoy the Dove,” “Plug 2,” and, finally, just “Dave” expanded the art form in ways not seen before or since. Trugoy the Dove, co-founding member of the iconic hip-hop group De La Soul, has died at the age of 54.
A cause of death has not yet been revealed. However, Trugoy was diagnosed with congestive heart failure in recent years. Notably, he did not join fellow De La Soul members Posdnuos and Maseo at last weekend’s Grammys tribute to hip-hop.
Hailing from Long Island, De La Soul is considered one of the most innovative and influential groups in hip-hop history. Trugoy, whose real name was David Jude Jolicoeu, formed the group alongside high school friends Vincent Mason (aka Maseo) and Kelvin Mercer (aka Posdnuos). The trio went on to lead a loose collective of like-minded New York hip-hop groups including A Tribe Called Quest and the Jungle Brothers.

Dilla Time, made in cooperation with James “J. Dilla” Yancey’s estate, will be “part biography, part musicology, and part musical meditation” of the influential Detroit-born artist, who died at the age of 32 in 2006 of a rare blood disease.

Following his Oscar win with Summer of Soul, Ahmir “Questlove” Thompson and his Two One Five Entertainment have signed on for a new nonfiction project about late music producer J Dilla.
Dilla Time will document, according to the project’s description, “the brief life and pervasive and largely uncredited influence of music producer J Dilla.” Dilla worked with some of hip-hop’s biggest names throughout the ’90s and into the early ’00s, including Questlove, as well as Q-Tip of A Tribe Called Quest, Common and Erykah Badu. Other collaborators include Ye, Dr. Dre and Pharrell Williams, and his influence can be heard in the newer generation of hip-hop like Kendrick Lamar, Flying Lotus, Kamasi Washington and Hiatus Kaiyote.
Thompson and Two One Five will reteam on the doc with Summer of Soul producer Joseph Patel, who will produce and co-direct with Darby Wheeler.

The Chicago-based band Divino Niño filled their 2019 breakthrough album, Foam, with lush, anti-gravity dream pop, so light it seemed able to drift listeners into a blissful new dimension. But on their upcoming album, Last Spa on Earth, the band is playing with bolder sounds — and their new single, “Xo,” is just a hint of the surprises they’ve prepared.
The track is one of Divino Niño’s most upbeat without abandoning their skill for lithe, breezy production. “Over that summer [when we made the album], we fell back in love with J Dilla,” the band tells Rolling Stone.

In their new documentary Our Vinyl Weighs a Ton, producer-director Jeff Broadway and writer-editor Rob Bralver shine a spotlight on a lesser-known hub of the hip-hop underground: L.A.'s Stones Throw Records. “Stones Throw has been an incubator and a talent discovery entity for almost twenty years now,” says Bralver. "It’s had a massive influence on mainstream pop culture, without a lot of people realizing it."Founded by Chris Manak, a.k.a. DJ Peanut Butter Wolf, in 1996, the avant-garde hip-hop-and-more label has been a trailblazer in the underground music scene for almost two decades. Spearheaded by flagship artists Madlib, J. Dilla, and Mf Doom, Stones Throw garnered a cult following for its willingness to play with genre and to take a chance on experimental, left-of-center artists (recent success stories include Aloe Blacc and Mayer Hawthorne).“They’re an example of a business that is driven entirely by the curator’s tastes,...

Don't Sleep: Necessary Notables
Mixtape: Elmatic
Headliner: Elzhi
Key Cameo: "Life's a Bitch" (featuring Royce Da 5'9")
Essential Info: It's no big secret that Nas' 1994 debut, Illmatic, inspired a generation of MCs, and Detroit spitter Elzhi is no exception. The former Slum Village rapper's latest mixtape is a retread on Nasty Nas' highly regarded classic, which he redubbed Elmatic.
For Elzhi, the concept was birthed three years ago at the suggestion of a friend. "I was given the concept by a guy named DJ Houseshoes. And he came up with the idea of me doing a mixtape called Elmatic off of my name, Elzhi, and off of Illmatic," El told Mixtape Daily. "When I thought about it, not only was it clever wordplay,...

There's a method to Asher Roth's madness. He rapped over beats from the likes of the RZA, Q-Tip and J. Dilla on his mixtape Seared Foie Gras With Quince and Cranberry because you might hear him flow over original tracks by those super producers on his next album. One dude who is definitely working on Roth's upcoming LP is Pharrell Williams — and Skateboard P might even serve as executive producer on the project.
"We linked up in Miami," Roth said of the Williams sessions. "Very good chemistry as far as creating music. We was down there while it was all snowy in New York. We had a blast. I think we have some really beautiful music for warm weather.

New York — Wu-Tang Clan member Raekwon the Chef will be forever lauded, not just because of his lyrical exploits on proper Wu-Tang Clan LPs, but because his solo debut, 1995's Only Built 4 Cuban Linx is one of the greatest rap albums ever.
But nostalgia can only take you so far; you have to live in the here and now eventually. Over a decade later, Raekwon finds himself a relevant Mc again after cooking up that great product once more. Only Built 4 Cuban Linx II was released on Tuesday, and some have already certified the album as a classic. With RZA sharing production with J. Dilla, Dr. Dre and others, and the Chef opening up the recording session to Beanie Sigel,...
