Federation, Pascal Breton’s Paris-based company which has just raised $18.4 million to expand its footprint, has signed a joint distribution agreement with leading independent production banner Elephant.
Created by Emmanuel Chain and Thierry Bizot, Elephant is the company behind French drama hits such as “Desperate Parents,” “Killer by the Lake” and WorkinGirls.”
The partnership with Federation will allow Elephant to develop shows for the global market, tapping into Federation’s experience working with international talents, co-producers, broadcasters and streaming services.
Elephant recently hired Sandra Ouaiss, a former high-ranking executive from Newen, to came on board as executive producer and head of international.
With offices in Paris and Los Angeles, Federation Entertainment is one of the market’s most dynamic independent distributors, boasting international drama hits such as “The Bureau,” “Bad Banks,” “Hostages,” “Marseille” and “Find me in Paris.”

The company has picked up UK rights to Waltz With Bashir director Ari Folman’s upcoming animation Where Is Anne Frank?
Wild Bunch handles sales on the project, which is in pre-production and is inspired by Anne Frank’s diaries. The story focuses on Frank’s imaginary friend Kitty, who in the film comes to life in the family’s Amsterdam home.
Folman was granted access to the Anne Frank family’s archives for research. Producers are Folmans’ Purple Wale (Israel), Jani Thiltges for Samsa Film (Luxembourg), and Eric Gossen for Walking The Dog (Belgium).

Sony Pictures Classics has acquired Tom Volf’s opera documentary “Maria Callas: In Her Own Words,” the company announced Tuesday. The indie distributor will release the film, which explores the life of the Greek-American opera singer, in North America, Australia and New Zealand. First-time feature director Volf spent nearly five years working on the film, which features never before seen or heard footage and performances of Callas — who died in 1977 at age 53. PARIS -- Sixteen independent French television production houses said Thursday that they will join to form a new professional body to "promote and defend the production and creation of television programs" and to ensure "that the profession makes itself heard." The Syndicat des producteurs et createurs d'emissions de television (Syndicate of Producers and Creators of Television Programs), or SPECT, will undertake projects to study the French audiovisual profession and the stakes involved, contribute to the sector's evolution, and play the role of interlocutor between the French government and television companies, the producers said in a statement. The production houses include reality TV producer Arthur's Endemol, producer and talk-show host Emmanuel Chain's Elephant and Co., presenter Thierry Ardisson's Ardisson et Lumieres, and producer Jean-Luc Delarue's Reservoir Prods.

PARIS -- French television producer and anchor Emmanuel Chain will leave pay TV channel Canal Plus to present a weekly news program on free-to-air channel M6, the companies announced on Tuesday. Chain, one of France's best-known journalists and newscasters, has been producing and presenting Merci pour l'Info (Thank you for the Info) on the Canal Plus premium channel through his production company Elephant since September 2003. Broadcast live and free-to-air on weekday evenings on the otherwise encrypted channel, the program features four personalities who discuss three topics on a range of subjects from politics and social issues to sports and culture. Canal Plus confirmed that Merci would be pulled off the air after June, when Chain leaves the group. Chain will join M6 in September, when French channels traditionally announce their new slates for the coming year.
