From a recording of Hamilton dropping on Disney+ to In the Heights hitting the big screen, Lin-Manuel Miranda has been having a moment bringing his onstage work to a broader audience. Now, he's making his feature-length directorial debut with Netflix's Tick, Tick… Boom! (out Nov. 19), paying homage to his musical theater roots by adapting Rent creator Jonathan Larson's autobiographical musical of the same name. Starring Andrew Garfield as Larson, the film follows the legendary composer as he contemplates his career choices before his 30th birthday. Here's what you should know about the life that inspired the musical, a life that was tragically cut short at age 35.
Larson, who became worried about his career while waiting tables in New York City, first performed Tick, Tick... Boom! as a solo act in 1990. The musical centers on Jon, or Larson, as he starts to hear a ticking sound just before his 30th birthday.

PBS Kids is launching a new show in October called "Peg + Cat" (the + is pronounced "plus"), which is all about making math fun for kids.
The show features Peg, a role model for girls, who goes on math-based adventures and solves math-based problems with her cat. Creator Billy Aronson teases that the show will incorporate music, some of which was delightfully played for us during the show panel at the 2013 TCA press tour.
"Every show ends with a big music video that teaches a math principle," says Aronson. "There's so much math in music, plus a lot of what we're teaching needs to be repeated over and over again."
Aronson also says that viewers can look for character-driven stories that simply happen to include math.
"We have to have a story we like that teaches math, it's completely integrated with the math," says Aronson, adding that the show features a "Romeo & Juliet" story,...

Diane Haithman is contributing to Deadline’s TCA coverage. PBS announced today that a new math series with a female lead, Peg + Cat, will premiere in the fall. At the summer 2012 TCA, PBS president Paula Kerger had spoken about PBS’ plan to develop a kids’ math series focusing on a girl character to spur young girls to become more enthusiastic about mathematics. In each episode, Peg and Cat encounter a problem that will call on them to use math and problem-solving skills. The series comes from The Fred Rogers Company and co-creators Billy Aronson and Jennifer Oxley.
