It wasn’t until I started writing this article that I remembered something. A new Hellboy movie, titled Hellboy: The Crooked Man, is coming soon, likely to see release sometime this year.
Ketchup Entertainment acquired the rights last year to Millennium Media’s reboot, which will star Jack Kesy in the title role. But we’ll report more on that project in the coming months.
In the meantime, Deadline has announced today that a documentary on Hellboy creator Mike Mignola, titled Mike Mignola: Drawing Monsters, is also coming soon.
Deadline reports that Nacelle (“The Toys That Made Us”) has acquired the doc, with no release date announced at this time. The documentary “tells the story of Mignola — one of the most successful independent comic book creators, who has inspired generations of writers and artists — and how he came to create a world-renowned comic book universe.

One of the most fascinating, enthralling, and altogether inspiring movies that I saw at this year's Popcorn Frights Film Festival was Mike Mignola: Drawing Monsters, so I'm especially thrilled that the documentary will be featured at multiple events this fall, with Los Angeles’ Secret Movie Club hosting the first public screening at LA's Million Dollar Theater on Saturday, October 15th!
In addition to seeing Mike Mignola: Drawing Monsters, attendees will have a chance to watch a 35mm screening of James Whale's Frankenstein, and the double feature will be followed by a live Q&a with the legendary Mignola himself, as well as Secret Movie Club founder Craig Hammill and documentary filmmakers Jim Demonakos and Kevin Konrad Hanna! A limited edition poster created by Mike Mignola and Dave Stewart (see below) will be available to purchase at the event.

"You look at Mike, and there's not a line wasted... He is such an astonishing artist." An early promo teaser trailer has debuted for an indie documentary project called Mike Mignola: Drawing Monsters, from filmmakers Jim Demonakos & Kevin Konrad Hanna. The doc profile focuses on comic book artist & creator Mike Mignola, best known for creating Hellboy and the B.P.R.D. They've just launched a new Kickstarter campaign, hence the teaser, with plans to finish up later this year. Mike Mignola: Drawing Monsters "tells the definitive story of one of the most influential and important comic book creators of all time," including "never-before-seen interviews conducted with the legendary creator at his studio, drawing demonstrations, behind-the-scenes footage from comic book conventions," and more. This looks like it can break out of the by-geeks-for-geeks mold of docs like this and give more people a chance to learn about Mignola and his art.
