There is definitely a recipe nowadays, particularly from films from Asia, in order to screen in the western-european film festivals. The intensely art-house approach and the focus on the rights of minorities are among the most prevalent. At the same time, and particularly regarding Vietnamese cinema, the curio that was “Taste” seems to have added some elements in the same path, particularly in terms of composition and the mixture of reality with surrealism and the erotic. Minh Quy Truong includes all the aforementioned in his latest work, “Viet and Nam”, which recently had its premiere in Cannes. At the same time, however, the film is so much more.
