Earlier this morning in the UK, we revealed Parish had quietly stepped down from her role as Head of Drama at the BBC’s commercial arm. In effect, she’s replaced by Oates, who has been promoted from her current role as Head of Continuing Drama.
A BBC spokesperson said Oates was adopting a “slightly different slate of programs” to Parish’s shows, which included Bella Ramsay drama Time. She will retain oversight of flagship soap EastEnders, plus returning series Casualty, Father Brown, Sister Boniface, River City and Pobol Y Cwm and new comedy-drama Anfamol.

A Confession is a compelling drama import from the UK that begins airing on streamer Britbox today.
While I gave it a quick nod in our weekly What to Watch suggestions, I'd be remiss if I didn't sing its praises with a bit more substance.
Time and again, I take a stand for dramas from across the pond or down under. A lot of programming foreign to the Us is quite good, but it's just easier, with my particular viewing habits, to watch those filmed predominantly in the English language.
As we're right in the middle of annual upfronts, the stark realization should be hitting some of you that there the pickings will be quite slim well into fall 2021. And, frankly, it's just a guess that we'll finally find a new normal in the entertainment industry that will allow our favorites to return and new shows to get underway.
That...

Martin Freeman is no stranger to playing a detective: One of his best-known TV roles, after all, is as Watson in “Sherlock.” Now, Freeman stars in the true crime series “A Confession,” premiering May 12 on Britbox.
However, “A Confession” diverges from Freeman’s norm as it portrays a real-life story; specifically that of Steve Fulcher, a detective who in trying to catch a woman’s killer, triggered the downfall of his own career. Freeman and director Paul Andrew Williams joined Variety senior editor Michael Schneider in the Variety Streaming Room presented by Britbox to discuss the real Fulcher’s visit to set, handling tough scenes and what makes “A Confession” different from other British crime dramas.
Freeman was initially attracted to the project because of Williams – the two worked together previously on 2015 film “The Eichmann Show” – as well as the heartbreaking good intentions behind Fulcher’s motivation to solve the case.
