In celebration of the 50th anniversary of hip-hop, Mastercard is sponsoring “She Run This,” a three-part panel series spotlighting Black female entrepreneurs and musicians. On Friday, Feb. 3, Mastercard’s vp of global sponsorships Laytoya Bennett-Johnson was joined by trailblazing rappers Salt-n-Pepa, emerging rapper Baby Tate, Grammy-nominated rapper Rapsody, entrepreneur Bridgid Coulter Cheadle and journalist Gia Peppers, who moderated the conversation.
The panelists were invited to speak about how they’ve built their brands, the ways in which entrepreneurship and creativity have impacted their businesses and musical careers, how they define success as women working in and around the entertainment industry and more.

In the video, the 27-year-old Michigan native shows herself in the mirror before cutting back to her masked face. She speculated that her reveal would be met with “mid comments,” but in a follow-up, she thanked her fans for their warm reception. “I just want to say thank you,” she said. “I was very anxious posting this video…but you guys have been nothing but kind and supportive.”

Girls’ night arrived early on The Tonight Show Thursday when Babyface performed “Don’t Even Think About It,” a track off his upcoming album Girls’ Night Out with Baby Tate. Tate, wearing a coat of blue feathers, handled the first few verses while Babyface strummed a sparkly Stratocaster (left-handed), leading up to the chorus, “Don’t even think about it, take a shot … don’t even think about forever.” Babyface, wearing dark shades, finally stepped up to the mic for the bridge, singing, “You don’t want to see you...

“This Must Be how the white gays felt when Madonna’s Confessions on a Dance Floor came out,” I direct-messaged my best friend in the wee hours of July 29, 2022. “Finally, an album for us.”
It was the third consecutive time I had listened to Beyoncé’s seventh studio album, Renaissance, after it debuted at midnight. As a Black queer millennial who grew up anticipating the global superstar’s stylishly curated releases, this felt remarkably personal. The second day of Lollapalooza 2022 featured surprise guest spots and artists paying homage to others during a stacked lineup that included headliners Dua Lipa, Machine Gun Kelly, and Bob Moses. While Friday featured an array of international acts, host city Chicago was given props with a dedication to an artist gone too soon, while others acts covered everything from the Beatles (Taipei Houston hit “Eleanor Rigby”), Lily Allen (The Regrettes performed “Smile”), Inxs (Bob Moses’ rendition of “Need You Tonight”), and Avril Lavigne, who also made an Irl appearance by night’s end.

What a difference two years make. On 2019’s Mirrorland, Earthgang conjured a stew of Black music idioms – trap, sampled soul, Southern blues, percussive polyrhythms – with audible joy. Breaking into Billboard’s top 40 albums chart, the album established Olu (a.k.a. Johnny Venus) and WowGr8 (a.k.a. Doctur Dot) as one of the more imaginative hip-hop acts to emerge in recent years, albeit one bedeviled by comparisons to Atl’s greatest duo, Outkast. Yes, Olu harmonizes with a yelp reminiscent of Andre 3000 at his most animated. But Earthgang is...

Issa Rae, whose five-season run with HBO’s “Insecure” came to a close with a finale this weekend, has dipped more than a toe into the music business. She’s started her own record label, Raedio, and is producing a new show about aspiring rappers, using her existing career to help launch music ones. But rather than come off as thrilled about branching out into another industry, Rae is making it sound like she’s entered a den of vipers.
Asked if the music biz is “a place where good ideas flourish,” Rae answered: “Absolutely not. It’s probably the worst industry I’ve ever come across,” she told the Los Angeles Times’ Mikael Wood in a Q&a about her personal and professional experiences with music.
“I thought Hollywood was crazy,” Rae continued. “The music industry, it has to start all over again. There are lots of conflicts of interest.

Last Friday’s re-release of Nicki Minaj’s breakout 2009 mixtape Beam Me Up Scotty comes as a growing number of popular artists open up their back-catalogs to streaming platforms. For artists whose profile grew at the height of the blog era, many of these early releases offer a look at important moments of experimentation. The Weeknd’s House of Balloons and Jhené Aiko’s Sailing Soul(s) mixtapes hit streaming in March; Lil Wayne’s iconic 2009 mixtape No Ceilings last August; a smattering of Drake loosies were collected into his...

Every once and a while there’s an artist that pops up out of nowhere and takes the world by storm. This year, Yung Baby Tate is one of those artists. Although it’s not entirely fair to say she came out of nowhere, because she’s been working hard for years, Yung Baby Tate has definitely surprised a lot of people with her creativity and one-of-a-kind approach to music. After taking some time to regroup after the release of her debut album in 2019, Yung Baby Tate is here to change the game and she’s already earned the respect of lots of

Yung Baby Tate knows that the best party tracks are the kind that make you feel good about yourself. It’s why her single “I Am” gave rise to 2020’s most viral affirmation. TikToks and Instagram videos abound with the song’s opening credo: “I am healthy, I am wealthy, I am rich, I am that bitch.” Thousands of people recorded selfie camera meditations to the track, the pandemic equivalent to having clubs jumping the world over. The song helped her debut on Rolling Stone‘s Breakthrough 25 Chart at Number 11.

I am healthy. I am wealthy. I am rich. I am that b*tch. Yung Baby Tate's "I Am" serves as the motivating soundtrack for millions of TikTok users, and it all started with her own personal affirmations. The 24-year-old rapper from Georgia intentionally infused her After the Rain track (featuring Flo Milli) with positivity and power, hoping to set herself apart from the negativity of the world and the industry in 2021. She accomplished this goal and more, giving listeners seemingly therapeutic experiences that they recorded and shared on social media.
Yung Baby Tate puts in the work, both personally and professionally, to accomplish her aspirations. Popsugar recently chatted with the rapper otherwise known as "Ybt" about "I Am," the joys of manifestation, and other ways she practices self-care during tumultuous times. A spiritual person by nature, Ybt is humbled by the success of her song but not incredibly surprised.

NBC has “The Voice.” Pepsi hopes to build a similar phenomenon with “Your Wildest Dreams.”
The beverage giant will launch a virtual hip-hop talent competition on Triller, the social-networking app that helps users edit and synchronize videos to backing tracks that is owned by producer Ryan Kavanaugh’s Proxima Media. Over six weeks, Triller will conduct a “Pepsi Wild Cherry Your Wildest Dreams” contest that features a panel of top industry insiders including Fat Joe, Mike WiLL Made-It, Mulatto, Quay Global and Kenny Burns. Three finalists will have a chance to perform live at a “Triller House” in Atlanta in early January to compete for a mentoring session with the judges and to be featured in an ad for Pepsi Wild Cherry in 2021.

The HBO series “Insecure” excels at bringing seismic breakups to the screen, but season four’s Issa-Molly rancor took things to “the next level,” says music supervisor Kier Lehman, reflecting on the past 10 episodes. “I was like, ‘Okay, another season, how are they going to develop these storylines and keep it interesting,’ ” he recalls. “And as I started reading the scripts, I could see they were expanding the storylines and the emotions that we touched on in these stories, getting deeper into these characters.”
The same could be said of Lehman’s contributions to the most recent season. Among his creative strokes: mixing Latin music with the established sound of the show, which included producing an original tune in Spanish unofficially titled “the Mexican Thanksgiving song.” Even more ambitious: he planned Inglewood’s answer to Coachella: Issa’s block party.
