A workshop production of his play "Whyo", a violent sprawling tragedy about New York Irish gangs, at Gloucester Stage Company in 1987 resulted in Israel Horovitz commissioning a new work. The resulting play was "The Chroma Line", a comedy-drama about life in a Boston wallpaper warehouse. "Whyo" went on to receive a grant from the Massachusetts Council on the Arts and Humanities.
