London, Jan 5 (Ians) Chelsea on Thursday signed defender Benoit Badiashile from As Monaco on a seven-and-a-half-year contract.
The 21-year old Badiashile has spent five seasons in Ligue 1 and made 135 league appearances for Monaco. The central defender recently made his senior debut for France, having represented Les Bleus all the way up from Under-16 level.
“I’m very happy to be here at Chelsea. I’m so excited to start playing for this club,” said Badiashile in a club statement.
“I can’t wait to see the fans and start playing in the best league in the world,” he added.
The Frenchman has featured in the Champions League and Europa League for Monaco, making almost 150 appearances in all competitions.
Badiashile earned a regular place as Monaco’s left-sided centre-back while still a teenager and was handed his international debut by Didier Deschamps back in September aged just 21, a reward for his...

Madrid, Dec 29 (Ians) The Spanish La Liga returns to action on Thursday after a six-week break for the FIFA World Cup. Here are some things to look out for in the coming days.
1. How will Barca do after World Cup efforts?
No club provided more players to the World Cup than Barcelona, who had 17 players in Qatar, with Ousmane Dembele and Jules Kounde playing in the final with France. While most teams were able to enjoy a mid-season break, most of Barca’s squad were hard at work and the lack of first-team members in Spain also complicated Xavi Hernandez’s job of organising training sessions.
The effects of tiredness may not be felt straight away as Barca visit local rivals Espanyol, but they could affect Barca’s form in the coming months.
Meanwhile, the club will be without Robert Lewandowski against Espanyol due to suspension but could have central...

Rid de Janeiro, Dec 26 (Ians) Zinedine Zidane has emerged as a frontrunner to assume Brazil’s vacant head coaching job, according to media reports in the South American country.
Zidane has been linked with the France managerial role but could make Brazil a priority if Didier Deschamps remains in charge of the Les Bleus, the newspaper O Globo reported on Sunday.
Deschamps told reporters after France’s defeat to Argentina in the World Cup final last Sunday (Dec 18) that he would discuss his future with French football federation chiefs in the coming days.
Zidane, 50, has been out of work since parting ways with Real Madrid, whom he led to three consecutive UEFA Champions League titles, in May last year, reports news agency Xinhua.
Brazil’s head coaching position became vacant earlier this month when Tite stepped down following the team’s World Cup quarterfinal defeat to Croatia.

Qatar, Dec 19 (Ians) France manager Didier Deschamps said his players suffered from a “lack of energy” in the team’s penalty shootout defeat to Argentina in the World Cup final here on Sunday.
Lionel Messi and Angel Di Maria struck first-half goals to give Argentina a 2-0 lead at Lusail Stadium but two late goals from Kylian Mbappe forced the match into extra time. Messi restored Argentina’s advantage in the 108th minute before Mbappe scored a late penalty as the game went to a penalty shootout.
Aurelien Tchouameni and Kingsley Coman failed to convert shootout attempts for France as Argentina lifted the trophy for the first time since 1986.
“We were facing a strong opponent and also lacked a bit of energy from some of our key players,” Deschamps was quoted as saying by Xinhua news agency. “But some of our younger players came on and brought freshness and quality.

Lionel Messi’s dream of winning the FIFA World Cup finally materialised on Sunday at Lusail Stadium with Argentina surviving a few anxious moments to register a fighting 4-2 penalty shoot win over defending champions France.
At the end of the full-time play the teams were locked two all and both the teams added a goal apiece in the extra time to make it three all and take the title clash into a penalty shoot-out.
In the tiebreaker, Kylian Mbappe opened the scoring for France but the subsequent kicks found the French players failing to beat Martinez in the Argentinian goal, one being saved by the keeper and one off the mark.
Although Kolo Mani scored for France it was not enough as their rivals were successful in all four kicks.

Doha, Dec 16 (Ians) The Spanish football team may have flown home after losing to Morocco in a penalty shootout in the last 16 but the Spanish football league is still going to be well-represented in Sunday’s World Cup final between France and Argentina.
Fifteen of the 52 players in the France and Argentina squads currently ply their trade in La Liga, with that rising to 16 if we count Real Madrid striker Karim Benzema, who flew back to Spain with a muscle injury but was never replaced in the French squad by coach Didier Deschamps.
Atletico Madrid may not be having the best of seasons, but they are the most represented club with Antoine Griezmann, Rodrigo de Paul, Angel Correa and Nahuel Molina all at Atletico, reports Xinhua.

New Delhi, Dec 15 (Ians) Former England footballer Sol Campbell feels France deserved to be in their second successive FIFA World Cup final after registering a 2-0 victory over Morocco at Al Bayt Stadium on Wednesday.
Theo Hernandez’s goal in the fifth minute and Randal Kolo Muani’s close-range effort in the 79th minute sealed a 2-0 semifinal victory for the defending champions and set up a title clash against Lionel Messi-led Argentina at the Lusail Stadium on December 18.
France, coached by Didier Deschamps, overcame numerous injuries to key players before the start of the tournament, including to Ballon d’Or striker Karim Benzema, to reach the FIFA World Cup 2022 final.
They now have the opportunity to replicate Italy and Brazil to become only the third nation to win back-to-back FIFA World Cup titles.
“Hats off to France. Two finals back-to-back. Not many have done that. Excellent performance. They did enough on the day.

The Les Bleus took the lead through Theo Hernandez’s scrambled fifth minute goal. Randal Kolo Muani wrapped up matters in the 79th, less than a minute after coming on, after a fine solo from Kylian Mbappe.
France ended the fairytale run of the Atlas Lions in the tournament, with Dider Deschamps side bidding to become the first team in 60 years to win back-to-back titles. Only Italy in 1938 and Brazil in 1962 have clinched back-to-back titles.
France is the sixth nation to reach successive World Cup finals, the others being Italy, Brazil, the Netherlands, West Germany and Argentina.
Should France win, Didier Deschamps – who was a player when France won their first title in 1998 – will join Italy’s Vittorio Pozzo as the only coach to win two World Cups in a row.

Doha (Qatar), Dec 13 (Ians) France go into their World Cup semifinals against Morocco as the favourites to repeat their place in the final from 2018, when they also won the title.
The French also reached the final of the 2016 European Championship, where they ended up as runners-up, so Didier Deschamps’s men have the semifinal experience they need to go into Wednesday’s match at Al Bayt with confidence.
Not only do the French have a great record in the semifinals, but this World Cup has seen four players set records to highlight the challenge they pose to rivals.
The first of those is striker Olivier Giroud: The AC Milan forward, who is a clear candidate for this year’s Golden Boot, scored twice against Australia to go level with Thierry Henry’s record of 51 goals for France. He then broke the record with the opening goal against Poland and...

Doha, Dec 12 (Ians) The semifinals of the 2022 FIFA World Cup, which will see Croatia take on Argentina and France play Morocco, look as if they will be a triumph of pragmatism over brilliance and emblematic of hard work on the pitch.
Croatia reached the semifinals for the second time in four years after a nerve-shredding penalty shootout against Brazil that left the pre-tournament favorites in tears.
The never-say-die spirit of the Croatians, coupled with the excellence of veteran midfielder Luka Modric and defender Dejan Lovren, saw a fine defensive display and shows that a side that has taken many ties in knockout stages of recent major tournaments to extra time, does not know how to give up, reports Xinhua news agency.

Doha, Dec 11 (Ians) France coach Didier Deschamps refused to look beyond next week’s World Cup semifinal with Morocco when asked about his future.
Speaking to the press after France’s 2-1 win against England in a thrilling quarterfinal, the coach, whose contract is up at the end of the tournament said: “I will be manager for the semifinal and after that we will see. I don’t know everything in advance. We will tackle that later.”
He gave a lot of merit to his side’s win, which came thanks to a first half shot from Aurelien Tchouameni and a second half header from Olivier Giroud, while Harry Kane scored one penalty and then missed another that would have taken the game into extra time.

New Delhi, Dec 5 (Ians) In the ongoing FIFA World Cup in Qatar, defending champions France on Sunday secured a convincing 3-1 victory over Poland in their round of 16 clash at the Al-Thumama Stadium.
Star forward Kylian Mbappe scored a brace of goals in the match to help France set-up a quarter-final clash against England. With goals in the 74th and 91st minutes of the match, Mbappe also moved to the top of the goal scorers list this World Cup with five goals.
Now, former England footballer Sol Campbell believes Mbappe has a solid chance of winning the Golden Boot in FIFA World Cup 2022 if he continues his good form against the Harry Kane-led side in the quarter-final.
“If he keeps on going that way, he has a very good chance of being at the top. He gave assists, scored some goals. So, he is adding a lot to his game.

Doha (Qatar), Dec 3 (Ians) The second day of matches in the last-16 sees England play Senegal while France play Poland. Here are some things to look out for on Sunday in Qatar.
1. France back and firing on all cylinders
France rested almost their entire first-choice side for their last group match after having already secured their place in the knockout stage, with their big players such as Kylian Mbappe and Antoine Griezmann only coming on in the closing minutes as they chased the game against Tunisia.
Coach Didier Deschamps will have his strongest line-up out against Poland on Sunday, with Mbappe, Ousmane Dembele and Olivier Giroud in attack, Griezmann in the hole behind them and Adrien Rabiot in the middle. They should be fresh and they should have few problems in reaching the quarterfinals.
2. Poland need a change of attitude

Doha, Nov 29 (Ians) France coach Didier Deschamps has dropped a bit of hint that striker Kylian Mbappe might be rested for Wednesday’s Group D match against Tunisia.
Mbappe scored twice as France sealed their qualification for the last 16 against Denmark on Saturday and also netted in the 4-1 win against Australia in France’s opening match.
However, speaking to the press ahead of France’s final group match against Tunisia, the coach implied that the striker would be rested, reports Xinhua.
“Physically he is very good. Does he want to play? You guys don’t know but I know,” commented Deschamps, who implied the chance had come for someone else to start.
“He’s part of a collective project and of course he has this capacity to be in the limelight because he’s decisive but he’s not 18 anymore.”

Doha (Qatar) Nov 27 (Ians) France coach Didier Deschamps expressed his satisfaction after two goals from Kylian Mbappe gave his side a 2-1 win over Denmark on Saturday to book the defending champions’ place in the last 16 of the World Cup.
Mbappe scored both of France’s goals, in the 61st and 86th minute, to beat a combative Danish side and to become the second player to score seven World Cup goals before their 24th birthday after Brazilian legend Pele, reports Xinhua.

Doha (Qatar), Nov 23 (Ians) A brace by Olivier Giroud and a goal each by Adrien Rabiot, and Kylian Mbappe helped defending champions France to carve out an emphatic 4-1 win over Australia in their Group D match at Janoub Stadium on Tuesday evening.
The World Cup holders bounced back from early scare when Craig Goodwin gave Socceroos shock lead in the 9th minute but goals by Rabiot (27th minute), Giroud (32nd and 74th) and Mbappe (68) paved the way for full points for manager Didier Deschamps side.
France next face Denmark on November 26, who earlier in the day shared points with Tunisia in a goalless draw at Education City Stadium and wind up their group engagements against Tunisia on November 30.
Australia on the other hand take on Tunisia in the next round match on November 26 and end their group fixtures with a match against Denmark four days later.

Doha, Nov 20 (Ians) France national team coach Didier Deschamps has expressed his sympathy for veteran striker Karim Benzema, who has been forced out of the World Cup after tearing a muscle in his left thigh on Saturday.
The 34-year-old Ballon D’Or winner, who didn’t form part of the triumphant French squad for the 2018 World Cup in Russia, flew back to Madrid on Sunday morning after a scan confirmed the extent of the injury, meaning his last chance of playing in the finals has now vanished, reports Xinhua.
“I am extremely sad for Karim who had made this World Cup a major objective,” said Deschamps, who tried to remain upbeat.
“Despite this new blow for the French team, I have full confidence in my group. We will do everything to meet the huge challenge that awaits us,” he said.

Doha, Nov 20 (Ians) French striker Karim Benzema has been ruled out of the FIFA World Cup in Qatar with a muscle injury, the French Football Federation (Fff) said on Sunday.
“Due to an injury in the quadriceps of the left thigh, the Real Madrid striker is forced to give up participating in the World Cup,” the Fff announced.
The Fff announcement revealed that Benzema was forced to cut short the collective training session after feeling pain in the quadriceps of his left thigh. He went for an Mri at a hospital in Doha and was confirmed to receive a femoral rectus injury, which will require three weeks to recover, reports Xinhua.
It is a huge blow to Les Bleus, who are aiming to defend the title four years after they were crowned in Moscow.

Doha, Nov 19 (Ians) It could well be a history-defining FIFA World Cup for France as Didier Deschamps and his boys aim to become only the third country ever to win successive FIFA World Cup titles after Italy and Brazil.
Being the defending champions, there will be a lot of hope from France who will be making their 16th appearance in the World Cup, a competition they have won in 1998, 2018. Barring Denmark, there is little to suggest they would be troubled much by the likes of Australia and Tunisia — the other teams in Group D — as they seek a knockout berth.
As the French national team looks to defend its title, there’ll be a bit of similarity as the group they are in is weirdly familiar to the one they won in Russia in 2018.

Over 15M viewers watched reigning World Cup champions France edge out Germany on France’s M6 Tuesday night in the first major head-to-head of Euro 2020 which runs through July 11 and is being played in various locations throughout Europe and the UK. That was good for a 57.5 share from 9Pm local and included a peak of 17.4M viewers. Tuesday’s match drew the highest TV ratings since 2018, M6 said. These figures don’t take into account public venue screenings, and there were plenty of supporters watching at bars, restaurants and fan zones.

Seville, June 16 (Ians) When Cristiano Ronaldo stepped onto the pitch in Portugal's Euro 2020 opener against Hungary on Tuesday, history had already been made -- the 36-year-old became the first player to appear at five editions of the European Championship. But it was not the only record he set that day -- the double he hit in Portugal's 3-0 win made him the all-time top-scorer in competition history, breaking away from French legend Michel Platini to stand alone at the top with 11 Euro goals.
"It was essential to start on the right note in order to gain confidence," said Ronaldo. "Now, we have to continue and win the next game."
"It was a difficult game, against an opponent who defended very well during 90 minutes, but we scored three goals, and I am very grateful to the team for helping me score two goals," he added.

France decisively beat Croatia 4-2 today to win the World Cup in Moscow, a triumph 20 years in the making. The Croatian team battled hard and actually dominated play at times, but France managed to find the holes in the smaller country’s defense and never trailed.
Croatia captain Luka Modric won the Golden Ball, awarded to the best player at the tournament, and assured that his name will be in the debates to come over who is the planet’s best player.
The game had its strange plays. The first France goal appeared to be off a Croatian defender’s head. The second France goal was the first video-reviewed goal in World Cup history.
There was no disputing the next two, though. French stars Paul Pogba and Kylian Mbappé scored clean, hard low shots as France put the Cup out of reach, easing to a 4-1 lead before a late...

Some 3.4 billion people — almost half of the world’s 7.6B population — is expected to watch the FIFA World Cup that starts Thursday, as the soccer tournament, which takes place this year in Russia, remains one of the world’s most popular media events.
Latin America is expected to have the largest number of viewers, according to research company GlobalWebIndex, followed by the Middle East and Africa, Asia Pacific and Europe. However, thanks to an embarrassing defeat against Trinidad & Tobago, the U.S. won’t be competing in the World Cup for the first time since 1986, a major blow to one of the largest TV markets in the world (albeit one hamstrung by time differences this time around). It’s thought that less than a quarter of the population in the U.S. will tune in to watch any games, and those may be largely expats and those cheering on the Mexican team.

West Bromwich Albion have enquired over the possibility of taking Arsenal right-back Mathieu Debuchy on loan to the Hawthorns in the January transfer window.
The Daily Mail (via Tribal Football) reports that Debuchy is eager to leave the Emirates Stadium in next month’s transfer window to give him a chance of gaining a place in France’s Euro 2016 Championships squad.
Having endured a lengthy spell on the sidelines, Debuchy lost his place in Arsenal’s first-team to impressive young Spaniard Hector Bellerin and has found his pitch time severely limited this season. A move away looks to be his only option to make his way into France boss Didier Deschamps’ plans.

The 25-year-old midfielder revealed he has spoken to France head coach Didier Deschamps, who told him that he must play for a club where he will start regularly during the 2015-16 campaign if he is to maintain his international place ahead of Euro 2016 in his native land.
However, Sissoko himself is also pining for Champions League football – and said “one day my hour will come”.

Just as Roy Hodgson has released his England squad for the upcoming (annoyingly distracting) European qualifiers, French manager Didier Deschamps has put his own selection out, and there’s no place for Remy Cabella.
Obviously, he’s suffering at the minute for a lack of first team action having been dropped in the wake of some inefficient performances, and kept out of the team by more natural wide-men. Inevitably, he will be back in the Newcastle team, especially with that high price tag to his name, but Deschamps has avoided picking players who aren’t in form (for the most part.)
When questioned as to why Cabella was snubbed, French football journalist Jano Resseguié, who works for Rmc responded that he simply wasn’t getting enough game time on Tyneside, and that it was worrying for him:

After being the latest player to be linked with a move away from Newcastle by his agent yesterday it’s reassuring to see Moussa Sissoko come out and clarify his own future.
Frederic Guerra claimed on Eurosport that Sissoko was open to leaving St James’ Park this summer should he receive an appealing offer from another club but his claim now lacks substance after the 24-year-old revealed, to our relief, he is content with life at the Club.
“I’m happy here and happy to play for Newcastle,” he explained to the Shields Gazette. “Every week, I try to give my best performance.
“I will go to the World Cup and then come back ready for the new season.”
Sissoko is currently with the French national team preparing for the Finals in Brazil after being called up to Didier Deschamps’ squad alongside Mathieu Debuchy, Loic Remy and Yohan Cabaye.

Chelsea are close to completing a £12 million move for St Etienne defender Kurt Zouma, according to the BBC.
The Blues have been linked with the 19-year-old for much of the January transfer window and manager Jose Mourinho views him as one of Europe’s brightest young prospects.

One of the footballing world’s biggest stars is set to miss out on next summer’s World Cup as Cristiano Ronaldo’s Portugal were drawn against Zlatan Ibrahimovic’s Sweden in next month’s qualifiers.

Newcastle winger Hatem Ben Arfa has been in inspired form of late for the Magpies, and his recent performance against Aston Villa was greatly praised by his manager Alan Pardew.
By his own admission, Ben Arfa wanted to score more goals this season, and with two goals and one assist from his first four games, he’s certainly enjoying the best start to a season.
In the side’s recent victory 2-1 over Aston Villa, the 26-year old midfielder was a constant threat on the right-hand side. Cutting in on his left, the Villa defence didn’t know what to do with him. He scored his side’s opener and played a big part in the match-winner.
Boasting such fine form, Ben Arfa is now hoping he can add to his 12 caps for the France national team – his last coming in 2012. Pardew said of his star player;
‘He’s magnificent.

The reason why Arsenal’s potential deal for Newcastle’s French midfielder died has apparently been confirmed by former BBC Sport correspondent James Pearce.
Pearce left the BBC recently to concentrate on a freelance career, but he is still close to the game, and according to his source, the deal died when Mike Ashley allowed the Franch midfielder to listen in on a call between the two parties during negotiations for the player.
During that call, not only was Cabaye’s valuation confirmed as £25million – a lot more than the £10million that the Gunners reportedly bid for Cabaye – but even more importantly, the Arsenal side of the conversation rather disparagingly referred to the French national player as a reserve…
Having had his head turned by Arsenal’s interest – in the words of manager Alan Pardew at least, Cabaye was apparently put off the move when he heard that.

Arsenal came away with a very good win against Didier Deschamps’ group leaders Marseille at the Stade Velodrome in the Champion’s league. A last minute winner from Aaron Ramsey gave Arsene Wenger’s side the three points after a solid performance which turned to near domination in a quiet second half. The French side started brightly but all but fizzled out after half time, allowing Arsenal to finally break the deadlock.
Arsene Wenger is no stranger to French football, but the Marseille he knew back in his days of Ligue 1 management were relegated for bribery and match fixing. Their chairman Bernard Tapie was thrown in jail, and Wenger, manager of Monaco at the time, left the league and continued his management career in Japan.
