New York, Sep 1 (Ians) Russian Daniil Medvedev secured his 250th hard-court victory late at night against Australian Christopher O’Connell on Day 4 in the US Open. In the third set tie-break, Medvedev outclassed the Australian with his depth of the court and ability of ground coverage.
With this win, he went straight into the third round clocking back at 2021 when he won the US Open final defeating Serbian Novak Djokovic straightaway in three sets.
Another Russian, Andrey Rublev, the eighth seed, also impressed, showcasing his resiliency and consistency in defeating Gael Monfils. Both players’ tenacity was on display during their protracted rallies, but Rublev’s higher level of consistency allowed him to move to the third round.
Alexander Zverev, who had previously reached the US Open final, also kept up his quest for a major championship. The German increased his prospects of making it to the Atp Finals after defeating countryman...

Melbourne, Jan 20 (Ians) The No.3 seed American Jessica Pegula on Friday reached the fourth round of the Australian Open for the third straight year. Her fellow American Coco Gauff and world No.1 Iga Swiatek of Poland followed her with a win in their respective third-round matches.
Pegula outplayed Ukraine’s Marta Kostyuk 6-0, 6-2 in the third round. In three matches so far, the No.3 seed has lost just 11 games in six sets.
The 65-minute third-round contest at the Margaret Court Arena was a tighter match than the scoreline suggested. Four of the six games in the first set all extended to multiple deuces, and Pegula saved five break points in the game she eventually held to lead 4-0.
The second set was more of the same. Pegula raced out to a 4-1 lead before Kostyuk got a break back. The Ukrainian later missed a forehand volley on game point...

Auckland, Jan 5 (Ians) No.1 seed Coco Gauff defeated 2020 Australian Open champion Sofia Kenin 6-4, 6-4 to reach the quarterfinals of the Asb Classic, here on Thursday.
After lengthy rain delays eventually forced the entirety of this match indoors and it was World No.7 Gauff who prevailed in 1 hour and 23 minutes to reach her first Auckland quarterfinal in her second appearance at the tournament.
Gauff built a 4-1 lead in the opening set, but the 2022 Roland Garros finalist failed to serve out the set at 5-3, allowing Kenin back on serve. However, Gauff quickly reclaimed her advantage, breaking her opponent for the one-set lead after a Kenin forehand flew long on set point.
In the second set, there were no service breaks through 5-4. In that game, though, Kenin failed to convert three game points, and Gauff earned a match point by forcing an error with her strong backhand. Gauff converted...

Barty, the 2019 French Open champion, was trailing 1-6, 2-2 before giving walkover to Poland's Magda Linette following recurrence of hip injury that she suffered ahead of the tournament.
"It is heartbreaking," Barty told media after pulling out of the tournament.
"I mean, we have had such a brilliant clay-court season, and to kind of get a little bit unlucky with timing more than anything to have something kind of acute happen over the weekend and just kind of run out of time against the clock is disappointing," she added.
Australia's Barty, who also used to play cricket, was one of the favourites to lift the title.

Paris, May 29 (Ians) Defending champion Iga Swiatek of Poland will look to follow the footsteps of Justine Henin and be the first since the Belgian to win two French Open titles in a row when the clay court Grand Slam commences on Sunday.
Having never progressed beyond the fourth round of a women's major, 19-year-old Iga broke through for her maiden Grand Slam title last year, upstaging American Sofia Kenin at the French Open in Paris.
Only three players have won multiple titles in the women's tournament at the French Open in this century -- Justine (4), American Serena Williams (3) and Russia's Maria Sharapova (2).
Iga celebrated French Open glory last year in the absence of world No.1 and defending champion Australia's Ash Barty.
No player has won more games on clay this season than Ash and Russia's world No. 30 Veronika Kudermetova (both 13) and the two would be fancying their chances here.
