London, June 29 (Ians) Australia were dealt with a major injury scare on Thursday when premier off-spinner Nathan Lyon limped off the field while fielding during day two of the second Ashes Test against England at Lord’s.
Lyon, who is playing in his 100th consecutive Test, was running in to take a catch of Ben Duckett off the bowling of Cameron Green in the leg-side after tea, when he pulled up sharply while running towards the ball.
The injury looked so serious that Lyon had to go off the field by taking the support of a member of the Australian team medical staff and shook off in pain while clutching the calf region of his right leg.
A statement from Cricket Australia confirmed Lyon has suffered a right calf injury and would be further assessed after the close of day’s two play. “A further update, if available, will be shared in the morning,...

London, June 28 (Ians) After taking the field for the second Test of Ashes 2023 against England at Lord’s, veteran Australian off-spinner Nathan Lyon on Wednesday became the first specialist bowler to play 100 consecutive matches in the longest format of the game.
Lyon, who made his Test debut in July 2011, has also become only the sixth player in the history of cricket to feature in 100 consecutive Tests. Other players in the list are Alastair Cook (159), Allan Border (153), Mark Waugh (107), Sunil Gavaskar (106) and Brendon McCullum (101).
Coincidentally, Lyon has achieved this rare landmark at Lord’s, the same venue where he was dropped in the format for the last time. This was almost a decade ago during Australia’s tour of England for the 2013 Ashes series.

New Delhi, Jan 26 (Ians) Mark Waugh, Mitchell Johnson and Aaron Finch will be the replacements for Michael Clarke for commentary during Australia’s upcoming tour of India.
A report in The Sydney Morning Herald says Clarke, the 2015 Odi World Cup winning captain of Australia, was passed over by the Bcci following a video of his altercation with his girlfriend going viral on social media.
The report adds that Waugh is set to accompany Matthew Hayden as the Australian commentators for the first two Tests of the series, to be played for the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, in Nagpur (February 9-13) and New Delhi (February 17-21).
Johnson will then take over from Waugh for the third and fourth Tests of the series in Dharamshala (March 1-5) and Ahmedabad (March 9-13). For the three ODIs that follow after the four-match Test series, Johnson will be joined by Finch, who recently retired from ODIs.

Perth, Dec 2 (Ians) Cricket West Indies (Cwi) on Friday announced that they have brought in Shamarh Brooks as a concussion substitute from Nkrumah Bonner in the ongoing first Test against Australia at Perth Stadium.
Bonner had to leave the field on day three of the Test match after having copped a blow on the helmet off all-rounder Cameron Green’s vicious bounce. He was batting at 16 off 47 balls and was involved in a 28-run stand for the second wicket with skipper Kraigg Brathwaite.
“Hopefully he’s Ok. We’re getting word that he’s feeling dizzy. There was that nasty blow from Green, and that’s not a good sight,” Mark Howard said in commentary for broadcasters Fox Cricket.
Bonner was initially deemed okay to continue. But later on, he had to retire hurt and eventually, a concussion replacement had to be brought in the form of Brooks.

Melbourne, Nov 19 (Ians) Australian Test and One-day International (Odi) skipper Pat Cummins has reportedly met former great Adam Gilchrist to clear any misgivings and heal the rift between current and former players following the departure of long-serving head coach Justin Langer.
Langer, who was coach of the Australian side from 2018 till the time the home team won the Ashes 4-0 in early 2022, reportedly did not enjoy a great rapport with senior players resulting in things reaching a crisis stage on a couple of occasions.
Cricket Australia then offered the former opening batter a six-month contract extension till the T20 World Cup, which he rejected and decided to step down ahead of the crucial away Test series against Pakistan.
A report in ‘The Age’ said on Saturday that, “Current players and support staff believe there is an ‘agenda’ behind the pile-on. They believe Langer’s former teammates are using their media...

Adelaide, Nov 5 (Ians) Several leading cricketers from across around the world have reacted to Australia pace spearhead Mitchell Starc being left out of the playing XI in the most crucial Super 12 Group 1 game of the Icc T20 World Cup against Afghanistan on Friday, with England quick Stuart Broad expressing shock on social media.
Kane Richardson was brought in to play his first game of the tournament and he ended up conceding 48 off his four overs. Defending champions Australia were looking to win by a big margin in order to leapfrog England on net run rate (Nrr), but, while they defeated Afghanistan by just four runs in a thriller at the Adelaide Oval, the win didn’t do their Nrr any good.
England now just need a victory against Sri Lanka at the Sydney Cricket Ground later on Saturday and Australia will be eliminated because of their Nrr being in the negative.

Melbourne, Sep 28 (Ians) Australian great Mark Waugh has included India’s pace-bowling mainstay Jaspit Bumrah in his list of five cricketers who he thinks are the best T20I players in the world.
Waugh is confident the 28-year-old Bumrah, ranked 45th in the Icc T20I bowling ranking, will fire during the Icc T20 World Cup in Australia next month.
“I think he’s a fantastic bowler in all formats, actually,” Waugh said of the Bumrah, who has had to miss a couple of white-ball series of late to tend to his old back injury.
“His ability to get wickets in T20 cricket is key. He can bowl at the death and he can bowl up front,” added Waugh.
The former all-rounder, known for his top-order blitzkrieg and athletic fielding in the slip cordon, also picked Pakistan quick Shaheen Afridi in his top-5

Melbourne, Sep 26 (Ians) Australian cricket legends Adam Gilchrist and Mark Waugh have opined that power-hitter Tim David should be in the side for the upcoming Icc T20 World Cup at home and believe the team management should take a call on whether to include either of Steve Smith or Marcus Stoinis in the XI for the showpiece event beginning on October 16.
Though David managed just 18 and two for Australia in the first two matches of the T20I series against India, the 26-year-old was in blazing form in the third match, smashing a half-century in the final game in Hyderabad on Sunday.
The cricketer, whose maiden T20I call-up for Australia — David has played 14 T20Is for Singapore as well — has come on the back of a productive domestic T20 league season and playing franchise cricket around the world, including the Indian Premier League. He has impressed both Gilchrist and...

New Delhi, Feb 21 (Ians) England players don't have any issue with the pitch that was laid out for the second Test against India at the M.A. Chidambaram stadium, said fast bowler Stuart Broad. England lost the second Test in the four-match series by 317 runs on a pitch that aided spin bowlers far more than it did during the first Test at the same venue which the visitors won by 227 runs.
The pitch ended up inviting criticism from a number of former cricketers like former England captain Michael Vaughan and former Australia batsman Mark Waugh.
"There is no criticism of the second Test pitch from our point of view. That's exactly what home advantage is and you are well within your rights to utilise that. Why wouldn't India play on pitches that turn square and upon which first innings runs are vital? They outplayed us on a pitch that they...

Chennai, Feb 15 (Ians) Batting legend Sunil Gavaskar on Monday hit back at former cricketers, including Michael Vaughan and Mark Waugh for their criticism of the Ma Chidambaram pitch in the ongoing second Test between India and England, saying that "its a challenging wicket but not unplayable" and that some people are always complaining.
As many as 15 wickets fell on Day Two of the Test match, including 10 of England's who were bowled out for 134 in reply to India's 329.
Gavaskar feels the pitch is "not unplayable" at all, as proven by Rohit Sharma who scored a brilliant 161 in the first innings.
"We saw how Rohit Sharma getting 150, and yesterday he was getting close to ball and batting. This criticism (on pitch) is pretty unwarranted," Gavaskar said during a conversation with former England cricketer Mark Butcher on Star Sports.

Chennai, Feb 7 (Ians) Indian batsman Cheteshwar Pujara's dismissal for 73 off the bowling of Dom Bess on the third day of the first Test against England on Sunday revived memories of Sachin Tendulkar's dismissal during the first Test of the famous 2000-01 India-Australia series.
The right-handed Pujara pulled a short delivery from off-spinner Bess but the shot got deflected off the short-leg fielder and popped up straight to short mid-wicket where Rory Burns pouched it safely.
Pujara felt that it was the only way he could have got out.
"Yeah it was [disappointing]. That is something [about] which I can't do much as a batsman. It was just unlucky. I would say that. That is the only way I could have got out. I was batting really well. The way I was playing my shots. The way I was seeing the ball. Everything was perfect," said Pujara after the end of the second day's play.

Chennai, Feb 7 (Ians) Cheteshwar Pujara's dismissal for 82 off the bowling of Dominic Bess on the third day of the first Test against England here revived memories of Sachin Tendulkar's dismissal in a similar manner during the famous India-Australia series, back in 2000-1.

Melbourne, Dec 29 (Ians) Prophets of doom -- including former captain Ricky Ponting of Australia and England's Michael Vaughan, and Aussie Mark Waugh, who all have predicted India's 0-4 mauling by Australia in Tests -- are already beating a hasty retreat, after the visitors made a grand comeback in the second Test on Tuesday and level the four-match series 1-1. And, now, a gung-ho India are eager to rub salt to Australia's injury.
By winning the second Test by eight wickets here, India drew parity, after losing the first one by a similar margin in Adelaide. Sydney, Dec 22 (Ians) Cricket Australia is not actively considering a new captain for the men's cricket team, said the board's chairman Earl Eddings amid speculation that Steve Smith could be re-appointed to the position.

Former Labor leader Mark Latham has won a finding against the Sunday Telegraph after the newspaper reported he intimidated an elderly swimming teacher.
The Australian Press Council has upheld his complaint that his children’s privacy was breached, and that the newspaper should have declared a conflict of interest over the fact that one of the swimming teachers at the pool on the day was the mother of journalist Jennifer Sexton, who wrote the story.
Sexton’s report, published on December 11, stated:
“Mark Latham has been reported to the Department of Education for intimidating the mother of former star cricketers Steve and Mark Waugh over a children’s swimming class.
